It would indeed take an entire video series to cover everything but let me address a few questions. I use a stereo MS mic (ours is the Sennheiser 418s) to capture the overall sound in the room then individually mic or take direct outs of individual instruments to augment that stereo recording. If the stereo recording doesn't need it, I won't use some of the tracks I capture. I multitrack all the sources which vary greatly from artist to artist (usually 12 channels max). In post production, I apply EQ and compression to enhance the audio being careful to be truthful to the original sound in the room, balancing all the parts by riding the levels of individual instruments and mics following what the music is doing. The trick is to make everything sound as great as that HD video looks, but do so in the most transparent way, steering clear of a lot of precessing like reverb, etc. It's a very delicate balance but with practice, good ears and decent gear, totally achievable. Check out this article I wrote for npr for more: www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/2019/04/02/705579879/tiny-tech-tips-microphones

As a fan of tiny desk concerts for awhile now and assuming you have been recording all the concerts I have noticed your skill level grow from video to video. I am always amazed by the way you capture the sound and it really does encourage the idea that this whole setting is one of kind. Definitely release more of these videos! All in all tiny desk concerts make me super happy and has helped me evolve my view on music and I think that awesome. Thanks! Sincerely, A college student who loves real music

I would have loved it the video was even more detailed and technical. Like, what microphones do you use and why? Which mics are better for which frequencies? And do you mix the concerts afterwards, or are these the raw recordings?

Lemme get this straight... I have to use a microphone? And balance the performers? And listen to it to hear if it's distorted? I just don't have what it takes to be an engineer. I imagined balancing microphone impedance with pre-amps then matching them to particular voice characteristics and styles. Hmmph. I better go back to cooking fries.
