Ben Howard: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Музыка
The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | August 9, 2021
Having spent time with Collections from the Whiteout, Ben Howard's sonically adventurous fourth album, I was curious to see how he would adapt these songs to the Tiny Desk (home) concert format. So when the opening shot shows Ben in a room alone, an acoustic guitar in hand, it was both an "oh yeah!" and an "uh-oh" moment. Gone were all those textures that he, Aaron Dessner, and a load of talented musicians had worked on, but front and center was that delicate, reflective voice that I love. It's a voice that, in the recent past, was often swarming in effects and buried in reverb.
So as Ben Howard opens his Tiny Desk with the album's opening track, I found myself zeroing in on the oblique and painterly images of "Follies Fixtures": "Walk with me to the burning spire. / We can count the dеad on Ender's pyre. / The dusty towns whеre the number's found / Don't quite match the missing." He later premieres a new tune, "Oldest Trick In The Book."
"Thanks for having me and allowing me to play the slight variations of songs that I'm forced to settle with at the moment," Ben says, and with that he kicks on the drum machine and plays the music that drew me to his work in 2021. Watch those fingers on the guitar and hear that tone. "Far Out," indeed.

I do agree. The NPR office is truly a leveling field. That and the amazing recording and mixing creates something worth of the success it has got. But this Tiny desk from Home is far from that. Some artists provide a raw experience, just them and a basic recording/mixing behind it (this one for example). But others have a very elaborate show, everything measured, with a team of people behind managing the recording/mixing, aesthetics, etc. (Dua Lipa's comes to mind). Anyway.. the magic behind the Tiny desk recording/mixing has a name: Josh Rogosin. Take a look to the AMA he had on Reddit. Is really interesting. He is the man!

I'm so giddy and excited for all the people being introduced to him right now. His music is beautiful, sad, happy, intense, calming, thought provoking, mesmerizing, hypnotizing, quirky, sentimental, and oddly nostalgic. It's like being in a desert for days without water and getting that cold gulp of water to reinvigorate you. When I found Ben at my worst, he reinvigorated my will to fight on. Welcome
Just back from watching Ben live. Mesmerising gig as was his last, when he played through Noonday Dream. I’ve grown up with his music, from starting to figure myself out as a 16 year old listening to ‘Black Flies’, to my first relationships and subsequent break ups replaying ‘the Burgh Island EP’, to finding myself watching sunsets more peacefully hearing Noonday songs. His music has progressed and developed at the same speed as me, and I’ve found myself loving an artist throughout his varied music (I usually overplay and burn out artists). I look forward to the journey ever more. As an aside, last nights gig was the same as 2 years ago - the crowd. People are going expecting 10 year old classics from Every Kingdom, which I imagine is frustrating for Ben. He’s been singing those songs for years, and is a different person writing Metaphysical Cantations as he was back then writing Keep Your Head Up. When he does sing the ‘favourites’, i personally love his new take and approach to them. Unfortunately, a lot talk over him at the gigs and grow impatient at the songs they don’t recognise, chanting “we want the wolves”. Some feedback online seems to carry the same sentiment. Bens gigs are intimate, especially at the moment and it’s a shame some aren’t along for that journey right now. I’d suggest seeing him at a festival might bring out more of the popular hits. But please don’t go expecting just the Spotify top played, just listen to some of the most beautiful chilled out songs and enjoy.
“Every Kingdom,” was my anthem toward sobriety. His beautiful voice and authenticity are pure magic!

This is a true image of a longing, maybe for the laziness of mediterranean summer afternoons, I don't know exactly...but it keeps me returning. Thanks Ben and NPR.

This may be because I'm able to read and understand the emotions of the song better through his expression, when he performs live. There are so many thrilling performances that still give me shivers every time I watch them here on YT; Everything - Glastonbury 2013, End of The Affair, IFWWW & Towing The Line at Later With Jools Holland, every live version of The Fear... I can go on with the list.😋 Ben Howard, he simply is the best!

My jaw dropped as he played a variation "I Forget Where We Were". Thank you for this. Now excuse me while I continue to daydream with this on repeat.
omg i’m about to die! i did not know this video existed 🥹 i have a forearm sleeve tattoo and i have KYHU hidden in there for keep your head up. im a full blood mexican from oklahoma.. idk how i became entranced with ben howard but he’s my all time favorite! so many hours spent listening to this man.
took me 7 years to see him in concert. and now this gem. i wil be blessed indeed.
His music is so important to me and my life. So stoked to see him play on tiny desk in such a crazy and unprecedented time in Sydney. Forever thankful for his down to earth self and his incredibly moving, beautiful music. Makes me so happy!
Low-key happier this collection of songs were performed than his more popular Every Kingdom phase
omg my absolute dream came true and I just noticed!!!!!
Ben Howard always innovative and keeps the listener on their toes. How about the capo left off the low E string? Never seen that.
the less production the more ben's talent shines through
God this man is supernaturally gifted with his music. All were perfect but that first one reached deep into my soul and found an emotion I didn't even know I had. Ben, as always, profoundly majestic
If Ben released an album like he plays Follies Fixture here, I would listen to it over, and over, and over, and over again.

As would I. Yet I have listened to 'Collections From The Whiteout" over and over like that. I love how he can take that and make it sound like something so completely different
Man, so good. I absolutely love that movement across the capo in Far Out. Glorious!
I adore ben, my early teens are filled with his music. His songs were the perfect fit for my exploration of the beautiful planet of ours and the liquid self. Glad to notice - he aswell, didn't stop evolving. Second Tune sounds and plays oddly like Radiohead. loved it.

"beautiful planet of ours and the liquid self" well said
Up until this point I'd never heard anything from Ben Howard before. I'm definitely a fan after Far Out, can't wait to listen to the studio version

Try out the Far Out Variation too. Similar to this but sounds so good it should be studio. Actually dive into Ben's entire discography. Gems including End of the Affair, Nica Libres at Dusk, Towing the Line, Esmeralda, Burgh Island, Promise, Black Flies, Soldiers, Bones, Oats in the Water, Time is Dancing, Rookery and Sorry Kid

And some songs only found on KZread (as far as I'm aware) like The Burren
Back here again almost a year later… I hope Ben is happy wherever he is probably Ibiza and I hope he comes to the US soon! Forever grateful for him!
I think many of us were waiting for this. He is definitely one of the most underrated but best songwriters out there. A true artist. I just think we needed an extra 40 minutes of this hahaha

How more people don’t know of Ben is crazy to me. Easily one of the best singer songwriters alive.
my first kid was laboured and born to this guys music. very healing and calming
This just proves music is timeless to me. Almost identical to a live video of John Martyn, some 50 years ago now but identical styles & one of bens idols. So raw
God I wish Ben would finally drop Oldest Trick in The Book. Such a beautiful song
*I'm STILL here, don't ask me why I literally do not know how to stop watching this. ben howard we've been waiting for this moment for a decade...tysm npr...one of the best things about npr tiny desk is the intention of accessibility, so mindful of its audience making sure that music is enjoyed by anyone who is willing to listen*
It's awesome to read these comments and realize that somehow it's possible to put a little bit into words the way Ben's music makes me feel.
Finally 🖤
i dont know how i've just put Every Kingdom on loop this week, and this suddenly shows up on my feed. finally!
npr forever got our backs 😭❤
No way he's finally done a tinydesk session! So jealous of all the new people that are going to discover him because of it. Amazing session as always, so refreshing.

right!! it'd be so awesome to experience Ben and his music for the first time again 😩
The I Forget Where We Were version is unreal. Ben Howard just never disappoints. It’s about time I can see him live again. Such a beautiful musician
Every note, slide, word hitting just the right place. He is a genius. I would really like to know how it feels to produce sounds like this. Breathtaking
Long time since I last saw any of his videos or him playing. He was a big deal to me back in 2014. He sort of looks now as if he was a character in Vikings. Good to see you again Ben.
Oh my. I was just listening to Ben Howard’s albums since yesterday and entered casually on KZread to watch some of his clips and for my surprise, this vid was uploaded 3h ago. This is marvelous. Ben, you are incredible. NPR thanks for this, I’ve been waiting for it for so long.

Ben howard and a guitar alone is far superior to anything else. I like his creativity on the records but theres something about his voice over a single guitar that makes it special
