Cate Le Bon: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
The Beatles may be an odd place to begin a Cate Le Bon conversation, but I remember being struck by the way four guys from Liverpool could sing without their English accents. That's true of most pop singers, whose words often come out sounding more American than anything else. But that's not true with Cate Le Bon. Her phrasing is completely tied to her Welsh dialect - in fact, her first record was in Welsh. I find that that draws me into her songs: The enunciation is completely tied to the loneliness and the questioning. One song she sings at the Tiny Desk, from her brilliant album Mug Museum, is called "Are You With Me Now?"
There is a feeling I love
Buried in my brow
I have no reason to run
I see no reason
Are you with me now?
Listen to the inflection in the line 'Buried in my brow,' and then when she poses the question; it's so intimate, such a whisper, so inviting. I'm also a fan of her clean, sharp guitar playing and the way she weaves it together with her partner H. Hawkline. If you're a fan of Tom Verlaine and Television, you'll find yourself loving this lyrical guitar duo. It works so well stripped-down, though there wasn't much excess in the original versions to begin with. These are songs of essence, clarity and drive, executed so simply here. --BOB BOILEN

The way people just go about making art (broadly), indifferent to end-of-times-malaise, keeps me going. Not to be weird. Glad you found her. I ran into her randomly too.

I like that they're jamming in their sweaters. Looks cozy.
A voice as old as the hills, but as new as the sandwich I'm about to eat. Lovely. Just as beautiful live too.
Unique,beautiful,original,authentic,Welsh and wonderful......
Are you with me now is probably one of my favorite songs ever. Cate is a gem.

This performance of Duke is so fantastic, Cate is so awesome.
love the television reference, that was the first thing I thought when I listened to her album, it's like a mix between stereolab, television, and blondie but with that said she is still extremely original and hard to draw comparisons to

Great to see Cate Le Bon on the Tiny Desk! We hope to catch up with her in Boston at some point. Beautiful songs. Nice work!
She has an odd Syd Barrett's solo albums and Nico & The Velvet Underground style to her. I fucking love it.
Ugh. She's amazing. So effortless
Album of 2014 for me. She's in a different league!
2019 just got with it now. Made for Tiny Desk and not a thing a miss.

i love her so much :,( the first song makes me cry tears of joy watching her sing it. thanks for this NPR
I needed something creative and original to listen to, so I just clicked by chance. My God I'm glad I did, I just adore her style. Time to check her album out. Thanks for this.

Everything about "Duke" -- from the lyrics to the melody to the guitar parts to the general off-kilter feeling to all of them -- reminds me strongly of Stephen Malkmus.
Best example of voice being instrument..wow!
Very relaxing. Beautiful. Thanks for the tiny desk concert. Amazing as usual. ;)
bliss. i have to say that the rhythm section adds a lot to all of the songs on album and live. i enjoy and like both versions.

What a gorgeous woman. At the second high "OOoohhh" on the first track she almost starts laughing but manages to control herself! She's playing in Portsmouth (unfortunately not 'til September) and i will definitely be going.I only heard of her 10 minutes ago,but you just know when someone's good!!!

Emulating Nico
This is really great- I loved it!
The combination of the vocals and the clean electric guitar tone is intoxicating. For me there's very little music as pleasing. In around 40 years of appreciating music I don't recall accumulating so much from a musician/ group in such a short time; Mug Museum, Me Oh My, Cyrk, Crab Day, and from her Tim Presley collaboration Drinks; Hippo Lite and Hermits on Holiday.
Her phrasing is captivating - caru ti Cate
cate and her voice and words are beautiful
Cate le Bon is super amazing
This ist just so wonderful
i don't want to sound overly familiar but i love when she smiles too. The songs are great and the performance wonderful, of course.
Love this album
Got to see them live when i didn't have any idea who they where! they are so great! It's amazing seeing them on NPR though
thank you radiorox norway for letting me know gems like this still exists.
So much right about that last song!
Nice to hear andsee some elctric guitars in an "unplugged" desktop session. Sweet!
I have been absolutely consumed by a lot of music over the decades - but rarely anything that comes close to this.

The need to change their band name to "two dope sweaters"
Interesting to learn that she is is Welsh, I was wondering about it, her accent, I I thought she might be Belgian or even French. I discovered her not so long ago (better late...) and like her very much. There are many things in her songs that make her both classic and also quite original. I am not a musician myself but there are really somethings that catch my ear.
So fabulous .... wish my Bowie performances were that good on You Tube ... so cool.
