Courtney Barnett: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Courtney Barnett can tell you a story like she's your best friend - provided your best friend is a funny poet with an Australian accent. Listen to "Avant Gardener," an autobiographical account of trying to turn a life around through gardening, only to be foiled by a severe allergic reaction. The tale that follows at this Tiny Desk Concert, "History Eraser," is a ramble in an alcohol-fueled dream state; it features some of the best lyric-writing in music today. Here's a sample from that song:
"I found an Ezra Pound and made a bet that if I found a cigarette I'd drop it all and marry you. Just then a song comes on: "You can't always get what you want" - The Rolling Stones, oh, woe is we, the irony! The Stones became the moss and once all inhibitions lost, the hipsters made a mission to the farm. We drove by tractor there, the yellow straw replaced our hair, we laced the dairy river with the cream of sweet vermouth."
The only downside for a fan like me is that these songs have been kicking around my head for more than a year. As she played them, I found myself hoping for something new, too. And so it was that Barnett graced the Tiny Desk with a brand-new tune, not yet on a record, about a suburb near Melbourne known as Preston; it's a song about house-hunting that she appropriately calls "Depreston." The song is thoughtful, acerbic and funny, just like the woman who sings it. --BOB BOILEN

I love her stream-of-consciousness lyrics, they are like beat poetry, so wild and free flowing, that if you aren't picking up on what she is laying down, it might not make much sense, but if you do follow her words, she is a lyrical genius!

One of my favorite lyrics! Along with her "Give me all your money, and I'll make some origami honey!"
The subtlety of the turn in Depreston gets me every time. How she goes from funny and sardonic to sweet and sad in a few seemingly simple lines. That kind of observation and writing is rare.

Her music sounds great with the rest of her band, but when she plays solo like this it really highlights the quality of her lyrics! I had no idea the wordplay in these songs was so good until I listened to this.
The way she throws out lyrics is so nonchalant but so robust and earnest. 2 thumbs up, 5/5 stars

"Its a Monday. Its so mundane." "You said we only live once, so we touched a little tongue and instantly I wanted to." The play on words is so fucking good in these songs. Haven't heard a true and creative voice like this since crying to p.j. Harvey's dry in 1994. Except for maybe grace potter. When I heard that second song on the radio I was in love, but seeing it live in that setting w/ no band was fabulous. I pictured her to be in her late 30s. Especially cause of the witty lyrics. Great great stuff.
This woman saves me. No joking, just had a terrible breakdown and my first instinct after that was playing her music. I hope I get to meet her one day.
Listening to her makes me feel so much less alone. Like there's people out there like me, somewhere.

I think that NPR treats artists cruelly by making them get up in mornings.
@eddieredmond7674
5 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, consider my analogy where the artists are the children of NPR who are the parent/guardian. NPR may then be seen as trying to be nice, by allowing for the "fact" that Artists (NPRs kid's) are likely to have been up all night anyway, so they (NPR) are (in my analogy) like a benevolent Parent, allowing their children (the Artists) to stay up late 'tonight' (tonight ->...the morning) to play with their toys (toys being songs and/or instruments). NPR are the best thing to happen to music for ages. They are up there with 4AD and the Snuffters, as the source of music that circumvents the big labels, and thus are facilitating music that sits outside of the "standard" that is peddled via the mainstream "charts". Oh, and you may have guessed by now that I live in a world of analogies...

No. .. everyone is NOT a genius and everything is most certainly NOT amazing. .. I can understand why you might feel the need to say that, given the disgusting OVERUSE of adjectives like that these days. ... however I am not one to throw those words around lightly, so please be sure your frustrations are aimed at the right person/people. The fact is I DO think this girl is a genius IN HER GENRE - which is NOT COMPARABLE to Mozart or Bach. And I can't remember the last time I used that word to describe a current singer/songwriter, so again - your accusations are SORELY MISPLACED. I can count on one hand the singer/songwriters from this decade that I would describe as such. So please, take your need to diminish elsewhere.
