Dirty Projectors: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Dec. 4, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- Sometimes the world turns obstacles into magic. When Dirty Projectors let us know they couldn't make it to the band's Tiny Desk performance until late in the day, we were sad because the clocks had recently turned back for the fall, we knew that our beautiful, natural light would be gone and it'd be dark. But with candles left over from a late-winter day performance by Rhye - and some LED panels and spots - we were set up right on time for David Longstreth to sing these words: "The sky has darkened, earth turned to hell / Some said a light got shined where darkness dwelt / So I won't cry or collapse, overwhelmed / Time like a song just might rhyme with itself." That song, "Right Now," and the other two tracks from Dirty Projectors' brilliant 2018 release Lamp Lit Prose, felt more poignant than ever.
Dirty Projectors' eighth album is often loving and forgiving. It's full of the quirks of production and rhythm and rhyme that had me fall for their music when I first heard it about a dozen years ago. What's wonderful about this Tiny Desk Concert is watching these talented people arrange this complicated music without amplification and seeing the joy on their face when it all worked out. Obstacles into magic indeed.

Dirty projectors are great at making me feel inadequate at guitar
@oddlogic1

I mean, to be fair, maybe inadequate as a musician, or maybe even a human. That is a monster set - from pointing out the political tomfuckery of a nation, to asking for one's hand in changing it, to asking/saying - let's resolve this? Incredible arrangements, the guy can sing with the best of them (his falsetto slays me), the lyrics are dense and heady - all of this to say, why stop at being a guitar player? The guy has so much more going on that "just" that.

@@TommyRobertsMusicChannel absolutely. We are (like it or not) a collection of the things past, funneled into the vision of what the future ought be. If it were good enough to just admire without aspiration, we'd all be consumers of the awesome, rather than being out and in the world (being awesome). So...you know...keep being awesome. :)

Tiny Desk Concerts is like Wikipedia... falling down the rabbit hole of music... bye bye rest of the day. Beautiful!
My favorite part of "That's a Lifestyle" is the call-and-response hocket/syncopation: "That's a-" "Product" "That's a-" "Brand" "That's a-" "Lifestyle"...so cool and so poppy somehow

To know that these songs sound as good live and acoustic as they do on the recorded versions makes me appreciate this band lot more. Fantastic session.
We're hitting peak Longstreth. He's better than ever. Love it!

I hope this doesn’t sound silly, but this performance moved me to tears. Truly brilliant stuff here. ❤
The backing vocals have seen so many incarnations over the years. As much as I miss Amber and Olga, this is by far my favorite trio.
One of the most original groups of late. I love how their sound is so unapologetic
I feel like Lamp Lit Prose is one of the most underrated albums this year. These songs are incredibly intricate, yet still so catchy. Beautiful acoustic renditions here. Thanks NPR!

I like this 100000000 times more than the studio recordings. This is so raw and impressive
The extremely talented Mr. Longstreth has surrounded himself with a fine band of musicians here. Really enjoyed hearing this intimate session.
The depth of sounds is sooooo wonderful!!! These sounds are alive in the universe!
i love the dirty projectors because their sound is unique and eccentric!
what a talent, he has a true David Byrne vibe, but absolutely not in a rip off way. Just a similar energy and genius ear for composition

That’s A Lifestyle is such an intricate and complex song. Amazing set, as usual.

So, so original and moving, mostly because of how deep he goes into composition and strange harmonies and melodic pathways. This album should be winning every award...I can't take it much longer with the mediocre running the world. It is not difficult to call this guy a genius.

His voice is amazing
The first song I heard from Dirty Projectors was "Little Bubble" and I listened to that song about 30 times within 2 days. The closest thing I had heard to this type of music were some of Ben Folds' work with other artists. It's a splendid originality, intricacy, without being flashy.

I had a similar moment with Gimme Gimme. I saw them perform it in their take away show and was literally floored that the hocketing part was actual human voices that It was on repeat for me long past an appropriate time to obsess over a song.

@@sealevelbear I struggle with anything pre-Rise Above, but have really got into Bitte Orca and now it's probably my favourite. I just bought the EP About to Die, which came out before Swing Lo - there are some great songs on there, quite raw and Beatles-like. And then there's Mount Wittenberg Orca with Bjork guesting. That's full of wonderful vocal/harmony driven songs. Love also the self-titled album.
Absolutely, ridiculously, marvellously deep and delightful!
Can´t stop playing this three songs...
