dodie: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Robin Hilton | January 10, 2023
On many levels, this breathtaking Tiny Desk from dodie felt like the ultimate cathartic release. The English singer and her band arrived after more than a year and a half of planning and COVID-related delays; and, this was the final performance we had behind the desk in 2022, capping our long-awaited return to the building after more than two years of pandemic disruption. A lot of us who were lucky enough to see it in person were pretty teary-eyed by the end.
But it was also a release because the music and the way dodie and her band pulled it off were both so magical. Bassist Jillian McKenna is a dodie fan from Canada who joined the band just for this performance after answering a callout on Instagram. The three backup singers are friends who flew in from Los Angeles; the string section was a mix of dodie’s touring band and DC-based artists and fans of Orla Gartland can see her move from piano to guitar and floor tom during the set. dodie herself, who played everything from piano and clarinet to ukulele, and the rest of the band flew in from England solely for the Tiny Desk, arriving on Saturday and flying back Monday not long after playing.
Together, they filled the NPR Music office with songs that radiated with love and life, perfectly recreating the playful, kaleidoscopic spirit of dodie’s 2021 debut album Build a Problem and last year’s Hot Mess EP. Strikingly melodic, whimsical and wistful, dodie’s deep reflections on trauma, letting go and moving on were the perfect close to a year when it felt like we could finally exhale and come together again in song.

Tiny Desk, you got me again. I watched out of curiosity, never having heard of the Dodie. If I am being honest, I clicked with a bit of 50-something cynicism. The lyrics, orchestration, talent and passion of the entire band drew me in immediately. They were incredibly well-rehearsed and crisp. Dodie’s lyrics were real, raw, expressive and vivid in how she paints a story. I am now a fan of Dodie, who knew? Thank you Tiny Desk for bringing this talented artist and her equally talented band to us.

the song “When” will forever and always resonate with me. It’s truly such a beautiful work of art. It really encapsulates longing, nostalgia, and romanticizing life for me.
I feel like Dodie (with the help of her crew) is a really great composer, it's always surprising how she manages to keep the "I made this in my bedroom at 2:00 a.m." vibe, but when seeing it live, there's so many people involved in making that sound. It's something I haven't seen in a lot of other places!

My now-husband introduced me to Dodie pretty early into our now 8 year relationship, and it's been incredible to watch her grow and evolve and just be so in awe of her musical ability, her willingness to take risks with her chord progressions and harmonies, and to relate more than I'd like to admit to so many of her songs. @@whatcanidooo I'm with you! US Tours are expensive, so our best bet for now is her opening for someone bigger, which would be just fine 😎
Never clicked faster on anything! Edit: God she is such a beautiful dork, I couldn't love her or this performance any more I think! This is everything I ever could have wished for in a dodie tiny desk. Thanks for making this happen.
I remember finding dodie in my teens and watching her youtube videos every day for comfort when I was living in a very toxic household - it makes me so emotional to see how far she's come and equally how far I've come myself from being that lonely teen, it honestly feels like we've grown together. I adore dodie with my whole heart and I'm so proud of her❤️

Starting the year off strong, are we, NPR?!
Saw her at a tiny 100 person concert back in 2015. Love to see how far she's come
To this day, I still cant control my tears anytime I hear When. Thanks NPR for having dodie
LOVE THIS so cool to see how far she’s come! (Also shout out to orla gartland in the band killing it, hope to see her in a tiny desk one day too!)

ive discovered so many amazing artists thanks to tiny desk that are now some of my favorites and I’m so happy to think of how many people are going to discover dodie in the same exciting way 😭💕
her voice is so much more resonant than it used to be. it's wonderful to see the growth from her bedroom recordings. she is such a wonderful and unique musician
Dodie is so aggressively delightful
I need her to write the music for a Broadway show 😭🙏🏾

@@Zoe-rf3ly It would work AMAZINGLY, right?!? I first heard her like 4ish years ago, but I didn’t really dive deep until the “Build a Problem” rollout. I’ve fallen in love with so many songs, and I can imagine so many fitting perfectly into that type of setting! I mean “When” literally sounds like it was written for a live theater performance!!! Now imagine if she was writing SPECIFICALLY for the stage?!? 🤯🤯🤯
dodie really is the perfect artist for a tiny desk
From sixth grade to now, my first year in college, everything dodie does still amazes me and brings me so much joy
In the credits, the cellist Katt Newlon's name is spelled "Katt Newton". Just wanted her to get the credit she deserves for her talent! Speaking of talent, holy moly Dodie and her band really did something magical here, huh? This is one of the best performances I've seen.
as a long term fan, I saw the thumbnail, screemed, opened it full screen with a big smile and applaude like I was there. I so happy and proud of Dodie and the band, you are all amazing!!
dodie and her music holds such a special nostalgic place in my heart, absolutely loving all that she is creating still. been a massive fan for YEARS and her musical and lyric growth has been astounding. when has and will always be so special to me and beautiful. tears always for this beautiful piece.
I've been listening to this with a wow face during the f*cking entire video, my god, why is it so short!? Every song is so special and a master piece at the same time. Thanks for creating this Dodie and thanks to all the members to make it sound sooooo good.
After a million listens of When, I still cried at this one. I love you so much dodie, congratulations for being on NPR, that's impressive!
Wow! Is that the BIGGEST Tiny Desk session ever???? Don't think I've ever seen 11 performers before. Dodie in great form, wonderful relaxed performance and I HAD spotted the wonderful Orla before she was introduced. Really enjoyed all of that, many thanks, well done!

dodie is one of the OG's. She's been a youtuber for years.
Been composing jazz and short stories for decades. Music is all about story; lyrically and sonically……. This woman…….will NEVER need that reminder …… lol This young lady has mastered the height, width, and breath of storytelling!!! Her masterful ensemble is especially dedicated, in the moment, focused, and humble. This is my first time hearing of DODIE…… ….. listening here in my kitchen…. And……. clapping after each song!!! She’s absolutely brilliant!!! ………. Lyrics….. Melody….. Harmonies……. Arrangements…….. Performance…….Humility……and Vibes……..ALL BOXES CHECKED !! This young lady is actually genre less ….. super rare…… and…. her subject matter has a fresh spin. ……. Her voice is: Uniquely RICH… with a lovingly familiar lilt ….yet with a yearning quality….. Soooo inviting! …… you can tell their from her soul. Hope you’re coming to Chicago DODIE……..we could use your SUNLIGHT my dear………….
If there were no Tiny Desk Concerts they had to be invented for Dodie. Her music fits perfectly and the wonderful musicians: AWESOME!
I love the looks of all her supporting musicians. I think it's a reflection of Dodie's awesomeness to bring so many cool folks together
She's one of the most talented songwriter of this generation. No doubt.
Hello, I'm 52. I didn't know dodie, now I like dodie. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
seeing orla there as well makes me so happy :’) what a talented bunch !!!
Wow! Just wow. Every one in this band is so perceptive of each other and still they all shine through individually. What a great performance!!❤🧡💛💚💙💜 Also such great songwriting by Dodie... but we all know that :)
Loved waking up to this! Need Orla for the next one!
