Foxing: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Watch Foxing play Slapstick, Nearer My God and Grand Paradise at the Tiny Desk.
June 12, 2019 | Lyndsey McKenna and Marissa Lorusso -- When we invited Foxing to NPR HQ, we wondered how the band's big sound would translate to such a (forgive us) tiny space. Would Foxing bring a bagpiper to recreate the shrill accent it snuck onto its latest album, 2018's Nearer My God, or try to replicate the cathartic energy of its live shows over the hum of computers and fluorescent lights?
Not quite. Instead, the St. Louis-based group brought the same sense of purpose to its Tiny Desk arrangement that's impressed us across its three full-length releases. Performing to larger audiences with each new album, Foxing is at the forefront of what's referred to as "emo revival," a term for today's crop of bands heavily influenced by late-'90s and early 2000s groups like Sunny Day Real Estate, Cap'n Jazz, American Football and others. But with each new LP, Foxing's ambitions reach beyond the genre's boundaries, incorporating broader inspiration.
For its Tiny Desk, Foxing spotlighted three standout tracks from Nearer My God. The quieter instrumentation pushed singer Conor Murphy's starkly confessional lyrics and shattering delivery to the forefront, especially on the set's opening song, "Slapstick." And even with minimal amplification, the swelling chorus of the title cut "Nearer My God" is just as impressive as performed during the band's explosive concerts.
For this performance, Foxing expanded its numbers, bringing a saxophonist and a couple of string players to accompany the band's touring lineup - and somehow, we managed to fit everyone behind Bob Boilen's desk.

i’m always blown away by the complexity and amount of depth in foxings music. they involve so many instruments and make them all work so amazingly. it has so many layers but they’re so neat and clean and nothing disrupts anything and idk man it’s just beautiful to see it live

I dont know anything about her so this may be naive, but she's got hella middle-school band teacher vibes. And I have a little hopeful fantasy that she goes to teach class and tell her students how to she got to shred solos for a rock band on Tiny Desk. Respect her, kids.

My only issue is you've got your band on this platform with a huge audience and you decide to give this solo time to someone not in the band while your actual guitarist is just playing bass, why not highlight the actual band members talents with the opportunity you have

This was my first time listening to this band and in the last two days I listened to all their albums. Crazy good. The whole package.
I keep coming back to this TDC more than any other. Best three songs from the album and the performance is brilliant. Emo kids unite.

I want it all I'll watch the bridges all burn And I'll be your dog I'd be a darling for you Or anyone who wants me at all Does anybody want me at all? 'Cause I'd sell my soul To be America's pool boy The crown centerfold My few good years left, a tribute To anyone who wants me at all Does anybody want me at all? Oh, do you want me at all? Do you want me at all? Do you want me at all? Oh, do you want me at all? I've got it all I feel the love in suspension And nearer my god At hallowed ground, holding hands Ashing cigarettes on gravestones Pin photographs on cork boards Unfollowing my dead friends Someone's gonna love me Oh, do you want me? Do you want me at all? Do you want me at all?

I keep on coming back for this one, but mostly for Nearer My God because they gave it that orchestral like feel still despite doing it in NPR desk. Damn.

My heart ❤️ LOS AMOOO
Saw these guys by accident early early days at the Gramophone, and gotta say, glad I did.
Adding that sax at the end was tremendous
As a Foxing fan and a Dave Matthews Band fan, the additions of the strings and sax is too powerful for me to handle
sax player is a badass.
This is dooope!
THIS is exactly what i want to see at 4:09 am while dog sitting & having to function on 20 minutes of sleep
This is lit, wish they'd have played older stuff though
OH MY GOOOOOOD FINALLY UPLOADED HERE I LOVE YOU SO MUCH CONOR & also hi ricky
