Haley Bonar: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

October 11, 2016 by Stephen Thompson • The first time I saw Haley Bonar in concert, she and her band were performing at the base of a 54-foot Doritos vending machine - a dehumanizing corporate venue of the variety that occasionally surfaces at SXSW. Somehow, though, her wry, spiky spark found a way to shine through.
A few years later, we found a slightly cozier spot for Bonar to perform three new songs, all drawn from the Minnesotan's terrific new album Impossible Dream. Along the way, she achieves an impressive range of sounds and storytelling, taking a little more than 10 minutes to pack in a melancholy look at the past's inescapability ("Hometown"), a brooding slow-burn about temptation and trust ("Jealous Girls"), and a stomping rager about doomed love ("Called You Queen"). All three achieve a nifty balance, sounding just stripped-down enough to suit the space, yet still immaculately polished at every turn.

With these tiny desk concerts I can always tell I am going to love it when the first note is played
Every lyric is meaningful. "No matter how you swerve you’re gonna hit that post." "Hometown goes wherever you go." Powerful!
Well, there is really something going on across the big ocean! I fell in love with Haley Bonar's music right from the very first chord of this album and ordered it straightaway, luckily available on CD over here in Germany.
Honestly "Hometown" could be in every person's library, and I think it should, its so beautifully simple sounding, and relative to everyone who has ever left home.
Have seen Haley many times in Minneapolis and once in a basement at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue in DC. Love her work! Anyone else think her voice and songwriting is amazing?

Been getting in to sound lately and just now realize why the tiny desk concerts don't sound terrible. It's the books and random crap on the shelves and desks bouncing the sound off in equally random fashion to create a clean recording. Awesome.

Not a sure fire way for success, but it works. They also have the bodies behind the cameras, which prevents echo, and an asymmetrical room with nooks and crannies for the sound to go into. That being said, you still have to be a bit of wizard to get something this clean with so few mics.

Once again, the artist sounds amazing on Tiny Desk, and you check out their recording’s only to find they are massively overproduced losing a lot in the process. Less is more!!

Go see them on tour. Albums serve the purpose of being clean and close to the artists’ realization. Live performance involves reworking the pieces for the moment. Totally different purposes. It’s rare a live album is good due to the lack of alignment with the listening environment.
