Aug. 12, 2019 | Robin Hilton -- Well before arriving for this performance, the three guys in half•alive asked for the exact dimensions of the space behind Bob Boilen's desk. Known for their live shows, with elaborate, synchronized dancing and costume changes, the group naturally wondered how they'd pull everything off in such a cozy space.
Their solution? Have the dancers sit for the performance. The choreography, now restricted to the width of two chairs, was incredible. You'll see how it all works on the final song half•alive played, "ice cold.," a new track from the band's just-released debut full-length, Now, Not Yet. And, if you're one of the 25-million people who've watched the band's must-see video for the song "still feel," you'll likely recognize the dancers, Jordan Johnson and Aiden Carberry.
The band, fronted by singer and guitarist Josh Taylor, didn't try to squeeze in any costume changes. But in addition to the sitting dancers, they also brought along cellist Callie Galvez and violinist Emiko Bankson for a beautiful but propulsive version of the song "RUNAWAY."
Formed in Long Beach, Calif. in 2016, half•alive is a band with a clear vision and gift for design, not just in the earworms they write, but in their entire presentation, with often-matching outfits and carefully selected color schemes. It wasn't at all surprising to see and hear the care they took to make their Tiny Desk debut a memorable one.
SET LIST
"RUNAWAY"
"still feel."
"ice cold."

He's not used to using more air for the lower notes yet probably b.c that's his normal speaking range. When he's making that sliding transition between low and high or consciously singing (not purposely enunciating) he unconsciously uses more air so those come out smoother and stronger it seems

I feel like the second song specifically was pretty lacking without it's full arrangement, the chorus still carries things along enough though with the sweeping guitar chords. Also it seems like the lead singer wasn't very confident in the beginning of the song which gave it even more of a rough start, but by the end that was much better. I love the band though, I'm sure they're great live. I hope they make a lot more great music in the future. Though from this album and some statements I've heard from the band, I'm kinda worried they might veer into something that's simply too religious for my tastes.

Sometimes I have a hard time accepting my illnesses and disabilities and what a different path my life took because of them, but something about these lyrics gives me this content hope and reassurance. “I hold my life out in front of me Dreams of who I want to be I’m seeing every empty page But I find that everything I am Is everything I should be”

ice cold. lyrics: You're feeling that ice cold Forgetting the good things Caught up in the problems Please stop complaining Tell me something beautiful Lovelier than usual Hope is the closest Haven't you noticed This beauty in focus Is dwelling in the depths of you A desperate longing to break through When you're feeling that ice cold Forgetting the good things Caught up in the problems Please stop complaining Tell me something beautiful Lovelier than usual Holding that pain is holding you back Keeping that rage is keeping you sad Caught in the wake of memories past Pulling you down 'til you drown in the bad I wanna see you wake up Shake free of all these hang-ups Your heart is filling with glory Shaping itself when you Tell me something beautiful Lovelier than usual Relentless and immovable Tell me something beautiful Hope is the closest Haven't you noticed This beauty in focus Is dwelling in the depths of you A desperate longing to break through Elevate, elevate, elevate (elevate) Celebrate, celebrate, celebrate (celebrate) Take a moment and appreciate All the best things resting on the way I wanna see you wake up Shake free of all these hang ups Your heart is filling with glory Lifting you mind and lifting your worries You're feeling that ice cold Forgetting the good things Caught up in your problems Please stop complaining Tell me something beautiful Lovelier than usual Tell me something Tell me something beautiful

RUNAWAY lyrics: I've been searching, nothing's working I've been tripping, no one's perfect Chasing vision, just the surface Shirt's on backwards, not on purpose, yeah I've been learning, something bigger Expectations, feet were failing I found blessings flowing from The sight of heaven Staring into my reflection Redirecting my perfection somewhere else When there isn't any progress Lean on truth inside the promise, it is well I hold my life out in front of me, dreams of who I want to be I'm seeing every empty page I find that everything I am is everything I should be I don't need to run away I don't need to run away I don't need to run away Something's working, heart is turning Vision's clear, and still I'm learning That what I am, what I am, what I am, what I am Is something more than I can plan Go, tell me now! I don't need to run away Have I been standing on a stage, or just a mirror? I'm forced to face who I become Searching for a new escape I scan the exits that embrace an easy out I hold my life out in front of me, dreams of who I want to be I'm seeing every empty page I find that everything I am is everything I should be I don't need to run away I don't need to run away (I don't need to run away) I don't need to run away I don't need to run away I don't need to run away No, I don't need to run away

still feel. lyrics: When I'm furthest from myself (Far away) Feeling closer to the stars (Outer space) I've been invaded by the dark (Can't escape) Trying to recognize myself when I feel I've been replaced When I'm furthest from myself (Far away) Feeling closer to the stars (Outer space) I've been invaded by the dark (Can't escape) Trying to recognize myself when I feel I've been replaced I can feel a kick down in my soul And it's pulling me back to earth to let me know I am not a slave, can't be contained So pick me from the dark and pull me from the grave 'Cause I still feel alive When it is hopeless, I start to notice And I still feel alive Falling forward, back into orbit So, when I lose my gravity in this sleepy womb Drifting as I dream, I'll wake up soon To realize the hand of life is reaching out To rid me of my pride, I call allegiance to myself But I can feel a kick down in my soul And it's pulling me back to earth to let me know I am not a slave, can't be contained So pick me from the dark and pull me from the grave 'Cause I still feel alive When it is hopeless, I start to notice And I still feel alive Falling forward, back into orbit (Oh) And I still feel alive It is hopeless, I start to notice (Oh) And I still feel alive Falling forward, back into orbit I can feel a kick down in my soul And it's pulling me back to earth to let me know And this heart that beats inside of me will show It will show Floating in outer space, have I misplaced a part of my soul? Lost in the in-between, or so it seems, I'm out of control Floating in outer space, have I misplaced a part of my soul? Lost in the in-between, but it can't keep me asleep for long, 'cause I still feel alive When it is hopeless, I start to notice And I still feel alive Falling forward, back into orbit And I still feel alive It is hopeless, I start to notice And I still feel alive Falling forward, back into orbit I still feel alive (I can feel it) When it is hopeless (It ain't hopeless) I start to notice (Start to notice) I still feel alive (I can feel it) Falling forward (Falling forward) I still feel alive I still feel alive

Playing live, they have a distinguishing unique sound, which cannot be reproduced or replicated in a studio atmosphere. The instruments are more fluid, standing out amongst the five senses. Although their voices are puzzling to hear, the confusion is hidden by the raw, uninterrupted, confidence they possess. Hands down great performance!!!
