Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Музыка

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Sept. 30, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires feel fortunate. They have their 4-year-old daughter, Mercy, a wonderful home, and each other. But as Jason points out, "It's been a little difficult, we haven't gotten to do the thing we feel we were born to do." Playing for an audience is what these two have been doing for a good part of their lives. Still, they're in their barn, making music for all of us to hear, and they are grateful for that. The songs for this Tiny Desk (home) concert are from Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's Spring release, Reunions. "Dreamsicle" shares the story of a child seeing his family falling apart all around. Reflecting on those times, he finds fond memories, and the chorus of the song - "a Dreamsicle on a summer night in a folding lawn chair" - conjures up bright light even amidst the darkness.
The final song, "It Gets Easier," deals with Jason's drinking demons, with a refrain filled with such stark truth: "It gets easier, but it never gets easy." These words could be an anthem for all those in recovery. It's the nature of Jason Isbell to sing the truth. He does it here with his remarkably talented partner and - unbeknownst to Mercy - a daughter that gives them strength.

Now that John Prine is gone I really can't argue with your statement about Jason's songwriting skills. That Amanda is also an exceptionally powerful, wonderful, and honest songwriter just makes their union an even bigger blessing to us than their individual talents alone. With the depth of the joys and sorrows they write and sing of, it is difficult to remember they are still quite young (he will be 42 in February, 2021, she will turn 39 on 5 March, 2021). With any luck our world will be graced by their musical talents long after I'm gone and forgotten.

Walk in there feeling like trash for him to open up with that first song and I don’t believe in any particular religion but I sure can take a hint when I hear one and that song almost had me in tears right off the rip with how much it felt directed at me. It's so obvious that they just love each other so much. I've followed both their careers and I'm incredibly glad for them and their collective life together. Individually they are wonderful and fantastically talented. Together they are simply a treasure. One day they will be recognized individually as not only as some of the greatest singer-songwriters of any generation, but probably the greatest due in yearst; and certainly they will be heralded as pioneers of the movement to reclaim real American Country from the horrible corporate morass that it has become. I'm sure Mercy's yodeling is great. Thanks for making a horrible year just so, so much better!

One of the greatest modern songwriters lyrically. He kind of sounds like Mr. Rogers in his cadence when he gives his little talk after the first song. I kept expecting him to say "I like you just the way you are."
