Justin Townes Earle: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
We threw a curve ball at Justin Townes Earle. Despite his five albums full of well-loved songs, we asked him to play new material for this Tiny Desk Concert; songs we hadn't yet heard. Earle's new album Single Mothers comes out this week, and here he performs two tracks from that record: "White Gardenias," his nod to Billie Holiday, and "Burning Pictures."Based in Nashville, Earle is a strong lyricist with a father, Steve Earle, who similarly finds strength in perfectly crafted words. The younger Earle is on tour now, playing old and new songs, so here's a taste of his sharp songwriting to tide you over until he comes to your town. --BOB BOILEN
Set List:
"Burning Pictures"
"When The One You Love Loses Faith In You"
"White Gardenias"

This guy used to live in my apartment building in Nashville. I got the unique chance of drinking whiskey and playing guitar with him on several occasions. Imma novice guitar player and he always tried giving me tips. Super humble guy with a lot of passion.. rest easy and thanks for all the cigarettes

That's about the coolest thing I've read today. Just recently discovered him, though I've known of Steve Earle for a while, and it makes me sad that he's already gone. He seems like a good soul. What kinda whiskey did he drink?

I know what you mean. But, really when you think about it we aren’t missing a thing :). It’s still nothing more and nothing less than little bite-sized pieces of himself accompanied by music. Justin is the spark that resurrected Americana music . To me he gave me hope. Growing up a punk rock kid and finding your own voice with this style of music. And the struggle with addiction. He has given me a voice and a passion along with many others ...even after his death . And those of us that knew about him all these years it's like we were part of a small club that was aware he existed and no one else did. He was the coolest person ever. Thank you Justin .

Forgive me cause I only discovered Justin within the last year, I fell in love with his sound. I only have ever listened to his records. Having only listened to his records and added him to playlists on Spotify, I didn’t know much about him, and had no idea that he passed. I was just now after all this time going to look up to see if he tours, and that’s how I found out. Thank you for everything Justin. Rest in peace my friend, what a beautiful and inspirational imprint you left on the world.
I can't believe he's gone. Can't wrap my head around it. RIP JTE
He was an absolute beast. I saw him six or seven times live and he was magnetic and incredible every single time. This is rough. But what a collection we’re left with.

9 years now but not one of those years takes away from his crisp genius. Sadly missed. Pain in his voice 💔

I saw JTE a few years back in a relatively small venue. It was one of the best live performances I've ever seen, and that is saying a lot since I'm getting on up there. He had the audience spellbound. Pretty profound experience. This is just tragic.

This gives me chills. There is something so deeply human about all of these songs, but also completely unreal...I can't imagine them being written by a person. It's like they just appeared out of a reservoir of everything beautiful and aching in the human experience. Amazing, JTE!

Nashville doesn't suck. Yeah there's music row and a bunch of bullshit country gimmicky stuff. But the heart of Nashville is alive and kicking in people like JTE, Steve Earle, Robert Ellis, Joshua Hedley, Nikki Lane, Lilly Hiatt, Kelsey Walden, Cale Tyson, Jack White, Lillie Mae Risch, Margo Price, Langhorne Slim, Old Crow Medicine Show, JP Harris, Erin Rae Mckaskle and the list goes on forever but you get my point. Go to Roberts Western World or any small music club in Nashville on any given night and you'll be blessed with beautiful music. Just ignore the fake bullshit and enjoy the real stuff

BanjoBandit I think you're assuming I've never been to Nashville, don't have a have a comprehensive awareness of the city, and that I'm anti-Nashville, which would be an inaccurate assumption. I worked and lived in Nashville from 1972-1985 as a songwriter-lyricist for some major recording companies I won't name for legal purposes. I am very aware of the form and function of the music industry. Some of the artists you have named are among the best songwriters of all time, who for the most part worked independently of the corporate structure. Nashville is not entirely different than New York or Los Angeles in its approach to a formulaic approach to music, in that there are certain rigid protocols deemed necessary by the CW music establishment which has become jaded over the past five decades. Keep in mind that many of the legends of music were long in being recognized, slow in development and creatively thwarted by the estate of Music City. I'm no trying to argue, there's no merit in that, but whenever someone expresses an opinion about a specific issue which doesn't coincide with your opinion or vision, as in this instance, there maybe far more behind their words than simple disagreement. Peace RTH
Watched the stream of Steve's tribute concert that was up in Nashville on the 4th. I wish I'd been there, so many good people playing Justin's songs. So this afternoon has been a dive into his performances. Like Townes and John Hartford I don't think I appreciated the complex poetry of Justin's songs until he was gone.
