Lee Ann Womack: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

Feb. 26, 2018 | Lyndsey McKenna -- Lee Ann Womack occupies rare terrain in country music. Though massively popular singles led to commercial success and widespread recognition, these days, she's working on the fringes of the genre. Her 2017 record, The Lonely, The Lonesome & The Gone, evokes the country music of Womack's Texas upbringing as the daughter of a country radio DJ, name-checking Hank Williams and covering George Jones.
At the Tiny Desk, the emotional storytelling and unparalleled vocal ability that anchor the album are all the more immediate. No bystander was impervious to the stormy and soaring "All The Trouble," and the affecting lyrics of "Mama Lost Her Smile" felt even more intimate and unguarded when performed just feet from the audience. "That's just good old country music story songs," she explained.
Steeped in tradition but singular in its expression, Womack's timeless performance tapped into the emotional core of country, and transcended our cluttered office space in the process.
SET LIST
"All the Trouble"

The key is to appreciate our privilege to enjoy her NOW. 💖 IMO, she is a reigning superstar among many who reward their loyal and loving fans. 😘 What would you pay for a casino concert with Ms. Womack? I've never had the chance, so that would be a priority expense.

Momo, glad to hear it. There is, however, very likely an entire multiverse of country music, alternative country music, Americana, country rock and country folk that's as good as or better than the best popular music - whether rock, R&B, blues, hiphop, folk, bluegrass, American standards - you've ever listened to; and that - God only knows how - has escaped your attention so far in life. If so, you're the worse for your lack of exposure and experience. If I were you, I'd try to use Lee Ann Womack as a departure point and start to make up for the deficit from here on out.

1960 Texas, 90% white. It was different, better, before all the cities, and even rural Texas, were overrun by foreigners, that changed the uniqueness of being a Texan. Now it means nothing, except in the movies and the memories of old people, being a Texan. Listening to her reminded me of the way people were back then, when it was a better place, Ms Jacksonville, Texas.
