Lucy Dacus: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Музыка
The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Bob Boilen | July 15, 2021
Lucy Dacus sits at a very special desk for this Tiny Desk (home) concert. And though she's played the NPR Tiny Desk twice - first in 2016 and a few years later with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers as boygenius - the desk at Maggie L. Walker Governor's School likely holds deeper memories. Much of her third album, Home Video, is centered on her school years in Richmond, Va., and the friendships formed and shattered there. During those high school years, she met her musical mate, guitarist Jacob Blizard (seated on the right side of the screen), and the audio engineer capturing all these songs, Collin Pastore.
Lucy Dacus opens with "Brando," a song about young adulthood, and for Lucy, understanding how others perceive her. "You called me cerebral," she sings, "I didn't know what that meant." She and her band play "VBS," which Lucy explains "means vacation bible school, for all you heathen folks." It's Lucy, as a young Christian, thinking about her faith. Then, four acoustic guitars gather for "Going Going Gone," as Ricardo Lagomasino moves from the drum kit and Dominic Angelella puts down his bass. Sarah Goldstone helms the keyboards. For the final tune, the band vanishes as Lucy plays the most troubling song from Home Video, "Thumbs," a song where Lucy fantasizes about murdering a friend's estranged father. It's a tune I often find too disturbing to listen to. But it's also an example of why artists create - to deal with profound issues. When successful (and "Thumbs" certainly is), these types of songs can move writers and listeners to think hard and understand.

this album is brimming with nostalgia, it feels so intensely raw and personal, like you found someone's highschool diary, or like you're under the covers with someone you don't know well yet and they're whispering their secrets to you. experiential and gorgeous

yes, every line is such a private memory that's shared so openly by her with us, i think it's beautiful i'm trying to give an attentive listen to all of her albums and so far the one i connect the most to is home video. such a beautiful, personal concept, written so tenderly....
“I play two chords and I mess them up.” This woman is a true blessing.

oh my god the way they did the "slayer at full volume" bit was so cool
crying, bawling, weeping, sobbing, shedding tears, screaming, on the floor, in a ball, rocking back and forth, questioning my life just from this video.
Anyone else genuinely have tears roll down their face during Thumbs? I was not ready.

YOU NEVER KNEW ME LIKE U THOUGHT U DID🗣🗣🗣‼️‼️‼️
Amazing performance. VBS, Going Going Gone, and Thumbs could each be the best song on any one album, but if you’re Lucy Dacus you put em all together to make it impossible to play favorites.

"thumbs" was released on the night of my birthday when i turned 20. my dad ignored me for hours that night and i just remember hiding under the covers and counting down until it was midnight. thumbs was a good birthday present
She performed thumbs for tiny desk. I'm only on the first song, and I'm already doubting my emotional readiness
I needed those last lines of Thumbs when I was in the 5th grade. But I'm still grateful to get them at 35.

The recording engineer needs a few Grammys for his efforts on this recording
the fact that she didn’t play Christine or First Time from this album is treasonous. Either way, amazing tiny desk, love this woman with every fiber of my being.
Lucy is such a gem. she is the most beautiful human being and I am so grateful to exist in the same timeline as Lucy Dacus.
Saw her open for mitski once. So wonderful live.
Once again, this channel has educated me, another astonishing artist. Thumbs really speaks to me. Thank you

Gosh the pictures in all of these songs are amazing you can literally visualize them. Amazing story teller. The connections as well, you could start a song and not get the connection until many lines later and suddenly realize the phrase or connection. Just stunning🙌
The way she looks so emotionless, yet sings with so much emotion really blows my mind. Bravo.
her storytelling is just as stunning as her voice
Why did the going gone song make me cry oosshh great wee band man
Literally the BEST thing to wake up to. If she would’ve played Yours & Mine I would’ve lost it lol I love that song
can't believe she played Thumbs for this, what a surprise! i was wondering when you would have her back on for a show :^)
Hey, Lucy. You likely won’t see this. You are so relatable for me in the religious confusion, and the lasting impact of high school years. Thank you for sharing.

The imagery in the second verse especially always blows me away.
I'm not sure if she's simply complex or complicatedly simple. Brilliant either way.
The fact this is recorded in Richmond at Maggie Walker makes this even more enjoyable

Impossible not to appreciate how her perfect voice flows so easily in such perfect songs so casually. So precious and rare is to find an artist with her talent and charisma. Impossible not to Love Lucy!
Brando's chorus does something to my heart
This whole album is so incredible!
Ugh I love her so much!!! One of my favourite artists of all time. Home video is truly a masterpiece

I totally love *Lucy Dacus' vibes* and her songwriting and the lyrics! Sending lots of love from Seoul and hope I can see your gigs on one fine day.
Wonderful performance. Thumbs is very real. I've felt similar emotions. Fortunately, with time, those relationships have healed but as the partner of someone in a situation like this, it's hard to know what to do.
Beautiful poets never die. Thank you for your time and inspiration this morning.
RELEASE THE DACUS MEMOIR!!! That’s all I got to say. Excellent performance!
I remembered seeing Lucy Dacus for the first time in Austin, TX during SXSW 2018! It was an amazing experience!
she looks and sounds omnipotent I love her
she is pure magic. her voice is like melted butter. i am so enthralled by her and her music
Was supposed to study but Lucy popped up. And no regrets. Also, THUMBS! :')
