Marc André Hamelin: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Tom Huizenga | January 12, 2023
Marc-André Hamelin has a marvelous, curious mind. While we chatted before his Tiny Desk concert, he snooped around the CD shelves near my desk, commenting on a few rarities and sharing his own eclectic tastes, including a crazy KZread mashup of all 15 Shostakovich symphonies stacked on top of each other.
The Boston-based Montreal native is regarded as one of his generation’s most technically astounding pianists, but he’s no empty virtuoso. His interpretations are probing, precise and warm - keen to bring out humor when necessary. He routinely performs the world’s most treacherous repertoire with his characteristic ease. I’ve witnessed him practically reduce a concert grand to matchsticks, and I’ve heard him tenderly caress a late Schubert sonata.
Hamelin’s colossal breadth of repertoire is on display in this smart set of pieces. He begins in the 18th century with the off-kilter antics of C.P.E. Bach - a rondo that stops, starts and swerves with the spirit of improvisation. His limpid rendition of William Bolcom’s “Graceful Ghost Rag” (from 1970) emphasizes the bittersweet harmonies with unhurried elegance.
Hamelin saves the rock and roll for last - a piece of his own based on what he calls “possibly the oldest popular song in existence.” Filtered through his lightning-fast fingers, the medieval tune “L’homme armé” struts mischievously, cascades swiftly and expands to a thunderhead of glorious sound.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Lifetimes of music have passed through this man’s fingers. Composers nobody’s heard of. Pieces only a handful of people could play with competency. And he’s far from finished. Unparalleled. So humble, down to earth.
The precision is insane. Gets exactly as much sound out of each key as he wants.

He has been the most technically brilliant and champion of unknown composers for decades. Long live Marc Andre Hamelin.
He played Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost Rag" as an encore when I saw him perform the Paul Dukas Piano Sonata. That concert was the most incredible and emotional performance I've ever seen in my life, he finished the Dukas sonata and he had tears pouring out of him- it's the only time I've ever seen a pianist so emotional after a performance... The fact that it was Marc-Andre Hamelin sharing such a personal performance in such a small venue, performing one of the most incredible solo piano works ever written- it was truly a transcendental experience.
OH MY GOODNESS I had no idea my favorite pianist would be here. This guy is one of the best there ever was!
absolutely jaw dropping to see Hamelin light that upright UP. Bravo to NPR for always doing the best
This is truly the beauty of these NPR tiny desk concerts…from Kirk Franklin, to H.E.R, Yebba, and now MA Hamlin, they really cater to all of our musical tastes! How blessed are we to listen and witness great music from every genre. -Greetings from Bahrain!
this environment is so warm and cozy. his loose sweater (looks so comfy!), the music, the shelves behind him filled to the brim... feels like walking into a very cool, intelligent uncle's house and listening to him play in his living room. absolutely great! so pleasant!

I think it’s preferred by some due to the cut overtones and it gives it a much crisper sound, but as a pianist I can certainly say it makes early French music such as rameau rlly hard cuz of repeated notes and the different mechanism of action on uprights
That 3rd piece (the one he wrote) has (to me) lots of Ravel qualities to it and maybe just a tiny hint of Gershwin. His mastery of so many different genres is amazing and I'm sure it all contributes to his own compositions. He started off with baroque precision and clarity, followed up with romantic-tinged ragtime, and ended with an impressionistic bombastic soundscape. I've just discovered him with this tiny desk concert and am thankful to the youtube algorithms.

Probably the greatest living pianist because a scholar and student of the entire picture, obscure & less-trodden paths, jazz, extreme modernity, but at the same level as anyone in any 'classic'; a true artist, and someone who follows the tradition of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Debussy, Rachmaninov, and all composers for this instrument more full of possibilities than any other.
Tiny Desk knows that variety is the spice of life. Bravo! Thanks for all the different styles of music.
Hamelin is the greatest living pianist IMO. So often he is always playing something rarely heard, but very interesting. Love the CPE rondo. He makes that modest upright piano sound so bright and expressive. Reminds me of Zakk Wilde shredding on a Hello Kitty guitar.

I agree. Although love Brendel and Kissin, Hamelin is broader and more encompassing and a better technician than most others, to sum it up the master of masters in our lifetime, steeped in the tradition of the whole of the piano literature, and I don't think he has ever stopped exploring.
@Suplex479

@@tomowenpianochannel technically he's very possibly the best. But I think his control of Tone isn't quite at Brendels level. But he is very well rounded and can play everything very well

This is completely mental. You hand these people sheet music and they turn it into pure bliss and joy. „Tremendous“ as the composer coined it. And yet so humble. Thank you so much for the experience. 💗
the pure language of the emotions.
He plays like an angel!
More of this, please! Classical musicians who write their own music are my favorite. Hamelin has been my most beloved musician for so long, and I love his original compositions. The love for the classical tradition he was brought up in is still there in his music, while the undeniable influence of the contemporary sound world permeates the whole. There is a similar quality to Bolcom's piece. I get the impression from Bolcom's and Hamelin's piece here of watchmakers- meticulous ordering of complex webs of sound and fusions of genre to create something personal to them as individuals.

Learning to listen is a vital skill for everyone. Music is a pathway for developing the ability to listen. Here is an excerpt from the writings of Marshall Vian Summers about learning to listen to life. "If you are present to the world, you will be able to hear the world. If you are present to life, you will be able to hear life.... Today practice listening to the world around you and the world within you. It only takes a moment. You will find that regardless of your circumstances there will be a way for you to practice this today. Do not let your circumstances dominate you... Practice listening. Practice being present. To truly listen means that you are not judging. It means that you are observing. Remember, you are developing a faculty of mind that will be necessary for you to be able to give and to receive the greatness of Knowledge." (Steps to Knowledge, MVS)
