Margaret Glaspy: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
August 22, 2016 by BOB BOILEN • There's brutal honesty in the songs of Margaret Glaspy that can make them feel cold, but they're also heartfelt. That's part of what makes Glaspy a top new artist of 2016 for many of the writers here at NPR Music.
Glaspy's new album Emotions And Math, made with her band, is a huge leap from her earlier EPs Homeschool (2012) and If & When (2013), which mostly consisted of the singer and her electric guitar. You can hear Glaspy's sharp words on those older records, but now that wit and wisdom packs a confident punch - as does her guitar playing, which is no longer simply fingerpicked, but also crunched with power chords behind a newly brazen voice.
The Tiny Desk concert provides a great example of how much power can be found in simplicity and purity. Everything serves the songs here: There's no overplaying, no frills, just great music and a tremendous new artist who sounds thrilled to be playing it.

I wonder if 80% of what the sound person does is tell the drummer - 'hey dude, you need to play really quietly for this to work. No, like, quieter than you ever played. I'm going to stand right behind the camera, and stare at you. If you don't play quiet, we won't post this. I mean it. QUIET"

love her guitar style.
Lovely. I like her voice. These Tiny Desk sessions have helped me discover so many great new artists performing their own material. It saddens me when I hear so many people of my age group (born in the 1960s and 70s) say there is no good music any more. They are simply not searching, or are looking in the wrong places (such as mainstream media, which is mainly a futile, depressing experience).

Agreed ! There's profusion of fantastic artists nowadays ! There's actually more you can find than in the 60's/70's thanks to the internet. Finding them is the hard part when you're into mainstream medias, and sometimes the hidden gems have very small communities, which make it harder for them to be known and recognized. Thanks to NPR and KEXP (amongst others) for making this possible.

I've come back to this video so. many. times. Her songwriting is on point, and she's a KILLER performer. Playing electric guitar with a clean tone and no band is not a comfortable thing to do, and she slays it.

Crazy to watch this now. She has developed her sound so much but I still come back to the old days. Something so raw and punk about it.
Saw her as the opener for Milk Carton Kids. It was just her and her guitar. She kicked ass.

By the time she got to "I don't want to see you cry" I actually had tears streaming down b/c I was so blown away by her talent - not just by her singing and playing, but by the song writing. I swear by God, I wish I could have been half this good in my time! Wow!
Love the gravelly sound she can get on her lower end in contrast with some of the gorgeous highs she hits. Such a fan.
Margaret. At first your voice came off as rough, but it soon grew on me. It was miraculous and incredible. Good luck on your journey
What a voice. What a guitar. I really love telecasters

This is actually a Danocaster which was her boyfriend's at the time - now her husband. So a telecaster shape but made by an independent builder. Great guitar!
She is a major talent, just saw her live in Nashville with Julian Lage, and it was breathtaking! I'll really enjoy watching her career.
Her voice is so unique I adore it.
To top it all off she's a terrific guitar player. Whew!
How can anyone dislike her voice, there's so many different tones and rasps to it which many singers find hard to perfect or even do! You go Margaret

This is a real artist. So wonderful and mellow.
I just bought her record, love it. Greetings from Slovakia.
the shuffling production of this 3 piece is very appealing and the voice of Margaret is excellent
Gahhhh I cannot get enough of this woman. She's so awesome. Met her in Iowa opening for the Milk Carton Kids!
Its incredible how many artists npr had introduced to me, to us, and has showed The diferent styles of diferent bands and singers, i have completly turned off my Radio and mainstream Media devices just to figure out where my musical Heart is falling for next... Been awhile since I've heard musicianship, vocals, and lyricism so unique, individualized, and ultimately really effing good! Glad I stumbled across this video
Great music gets better with each listen, and I've been coming back to this performance for years, enjoying it more each time. Just a perfect performance. Killer tones from her Tele and voice, awesome songs, phat pocket, great guitar solos, engineer nailed it too.
I am IN LOVE with that first guitar rift.
listening to her makes me surpised, that voice is like a garden with wildflowers, you gotta walk with her to find the beauty behind the corner, stunning and lovely
Love the guitar, the growl, everything. Made me smile on a gloomy Monday.
Me encuentro regresando una y otra vez a este concierto de Tiny Desk, amando cada vez mas su voz, su estilo y su música. Simplemente maravilloso Margaret!
Glaspy is fantastic! I love her guitar and voice. She performs with great energy, even in the more subdued stage of Tiny Desk.

You just have to admire that honest grungyness, awesome. The whole band just seems to be made to play with each other. Also i like the fact that they seem to really focus on emotion instead of overly fancy riffs or drums 10/10
Margaret, it's been such a gift to watch you become and become.
Distinctive voice - two phrases and you know she has something to say, an earned perspective. Great to feel the musicians breathing the music together - not just playing in separate zones. Really felt "I Don't Wanna Be Somebody"...a lot of us have been there, so let's have some songs about it,,,Nice how the guitar's an extension of/counterpoint to her voice...Refreshing.
She sounds amazing! Love her tone.
Awww luv this band. She's calm yet powerful.
AH a breath of fresh air. She's one with the guitar and the band is one with her.
I just love her! I can't believe I just found her last week!!
I love her live performance at tiny desk ! To show my support for her music I purchased her new album but to be totally honest... i like her music live best!
I've watched a lot of videos from NPR Music's channel and she is the only one who keeps her eyes open while playing and singing
That guitar sounds almost as incredible as her voice. Damn!
I love all the cool subtle things she does with her voice..
You’re amazing ! I really dig this sound. It’s unique, honest, raw. Thank’s for sharing your authenticity. Congrats on the new album.
