The drummer hypnotized two highschool band geeks and turned them into music slaves. upon a key word, uttered over the phone, the two sax players leave their homes and walk days until they reach the show and play non-stop until the drummer sends them back. He’s using the cone to project/emphasize the lower frequencies of the sax while keeping the range. I’ve used a similar technique when recording with percussion and also recording a bass through a distorted guitar amp. 🤓

This was the first NPR tiny desk I had ever seen 6 years ago. Can't even remember how I ended up here but every now and then I come back for the possessed drummer and the guy making a tubax out of a traffic cone

Ok I just loved this. The interplay between the three guys, the energy, creativity and talent are just off the scale.

Only other saxophone players will realize how difficult it is to play something like this. Notice how the left tenor play player has to breathe a huge amount after only playing a few notes. Also, playing that high on tenor as the guy on the right does with that much control is almost impossible. P.S. I want some of whatever that drummer's been doing.

And the Bari/Cone player must have incredible lung capacity, because I've tried to do the cone in tenor thing, and it takes way more air than I can supply haha. Especially to still play in tune

Superb. I don't care if they have all hallucinated themselves into existence: this is a sublime sonic tsunami.

“sax is such an attractive instrument... it just makes people sexy" "idk man... guitarist who sing get all the girls" -- sees cone sax "oh now I know..."

This exemplifies why I watch EVERY SINGLE Tiny Desk Concert, regardless of whether I have heard of the musicians or not... Moon Hooch is something I never knew I was looking for, and now I found them! I LOVE THIS MUSIC! These guys are outstanding. And the Tiny Desk Concert series has - yet again - introduced me to another band I am going to go out and see as soon as I can! Thank you!

I wish we had the dimensions of the cone so more people could take up the fine art of playing the saxocone

I believe it is 36" exactly with a 2" tape and rubber insert (to make it seal better) I measured it before. Just start with 40" and then slowly cut off more until the Bb fingering plays a D an octave below the low D--with tenor.

@@gangofgreenhorns2672 I know my low A pipe for my bari makes low B stuffy and out of tune, in addition to dropping low Bb to low A. Does having a pipe as long as this one also make low C and C# play badly, or is it just tuned to D out of key signature choice?

@@sreeser3512 I have talked to my friend Lucas--who has covered their song--about it, and he said the cardboard tube they used made it play stuffier on the low end. The wider bore of the cone, might help that a little. Never asked Wenzl how it played.

I literally want these guys to be my first concert I see when this pandemic is over. I saw these guys at house of blue San Diego, they opened for unwritten law. I kid you not, it went from a punk show to a full on rave because of these guys. I can’t wait to see them again some day 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

In like 2014 they opened for they might be giants, I was too young at the time to realize how good they were haha

The drummer is insanely skilled, and wired to the moon.

Also this drummer makes me feel real awkward, but I'm compelled to enjoy the music just as much as he is. He's on a whole nother level though. Like sax dudes are playing the music, he's living the music.

God and the two Cosmic Elephants

I watched this npr last night while falling asleep and I woke up this morning in kind of a surreal state. Like there's no way I just watched an npr of some sax players with traffic cones in their sax, right? Well to my surprise this is a real thing and it jumped all the way to my top 5 nprs for surreee. (Also the caution tape is v crucial)

The drummer is by far the best part of this group! The guys beats are super tight and on point!

Band kids have always been the cool ones... What type of highschool did you go to?!? Everyone else was always caught up in social hierarchy and mainstream fashion, we litterally just partied and diddled each other

In fact, an issue was that drugs were too popular with the band. Its one things to drink and smoke trees, but lots of the upperclassmen were abusing other stuff too.

I don't know how this popped up on my feed so randomly years later, but this band is by far the best NYC subway band ever. I've never seen so many people consistently break into dancing on a subway platform as have with them. Didn't matter the time of day, but was especially helpful on the exhausting commute home from work to get a bolt of their energy.

Best Drummer I've heard. Ever. these guys all rip like no other. brasshouse ftw

And then they all died of a simultaneous brain aneurysm. I used watch these guys play all the time in Washington Square Park. This doesn't even begin to capture the intensity of that experience.

Came for the music, replayed multiple times for comments, stayed forever transfixed by the all encompassing enthusiasm of the drummer.

I feel like I'm staring back into the past; at the very creation of what it is and what it means to be...madlads.
