Noname: Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

Bobby Carter | April 3, 2017 - Here's a fun fact about Noname's Tiny Desk Concert: It almost didn't happen. Around the time of their D.C. stop, she (born Fatimah Warner) and her bandmates got their first dose of tour sickness. Thanks to rest, medicine and our mutual excitement, she made her way into the NPR offices the following day. If there ever was a 'Noname' way of doing things, this is definitely her signature method. It's in the way she's able to muster a smile while performing a heartbreaking tale of abortion. It's those sometimes bleak, melancholy lyrics over brilliant, colorful production.
These intriguing juxtapositions are what propelled Telefone to our top 50 albums of 2016. She prefaced her performance of "Reality Check" by saying: "I kind of talk in like, scramble-think, so hopefully you guys follow it." "Scramble-think" refers to the clever metaphors she weaves in detailing the many ways she's dodged destiny. On "Bye Bye Baby," she raps:
Somebody let the yellow in
Bye bye blue
I'm gonna fall in love again
These lyrics, their colors, represent the sector she commands in hip-hop today. The yellow: The bright side. (Of course, there's plenty of gloom and doom to rap about - especially coming from Chicago - but there's also plenty of light.)
There's an appropriate moment of silence in the office, before the applause, following her emotional medley. She asked us if we liked it. We loved it - and you likely will too.
Telefone is available now.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Is this produced and directed by Black people, or is this white-written and performed rk further cast Black men as everyone's enemy? I'd imagine the former, but maybe you'll surprise me.

"How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back?" --- appropo that Noname hates her white fans & goes to predominantly white countries & is confused why most of her audience is white & says she will quit rapping if the majority of her listeners continue to be white. imagine being this racist & still being able to be hosted on respected platforms like Tiny Desk smh

The Pseudo Nigo I feel the exact way about her. The smooth vibes her voice give off feel just right in a world where female rappers show off the aggression they have.

Yeah, it's nice seeing a more well known Female MC not just doing her best Lil Kim impression. Like I get that Lil Kim is influential but maybe there would be more well known Female MCs if they weren't all trying to sound the same. If y'all haven't heard them check out the Seattle duo THEESatisfaction, it's great stuff.

I have the biggest crush on Noname. She's like that quiet girl in the corner of a house party, that's just sitting there, sipping her drink. But when you talk to her, she's one of the smartest, sweetest girls you've ever met.

It so feels like there is a constant stream of intelligent info and vibes flowing thru nonames mind and she merely has to open up and let it out. Like a translator of the soul. She is a gem.
