I went to high school with Paul, and was always overawed with his piano playing and his amazing dedication to musical excellence. He was already employed as the organist of a very large Catholic church in our town by age 15. It is still a great pleasure to hear him play!
I am a martial artist, not a student of music, but this man's obvious dedication and discipline speak to me like the most respected of colleagues. Impressive and humbling: I can only imagine the hours of practice and self-imposed detriment necessary to achieve such seemingly effortless ability. Thank you for the inspiration!
Oh, and thank you for this, NPR. The Tiny Desk Concerts are a treasure.
Paul is a great organist and even though this is an electronic instrument, it has wonderful, clear voicing and tone. The video showing hands and feet is wonderful as well. A delight all around. Thank you for posting this.
Love the way he plays from memory too. I can learn pieces and commit them to memory at the same time and they stick. On the other hand my sight reading is deplorable.

There is a tendency that people who sightread well struggle to memorize music while people who memorize well struggle with sightreading. In my own experience, the process of sightreading does not lend itself to memorization and the process of memorization doesn't really help with sightreading.
Had the good luck a few years ago to hear him play the concerto by Stephen Paulus, with the Cleveland Orchestra, followed by a Bach encore. A wonderful evening of music, and I've followed Mr. Jacobs' work ever since. I need to look into his recordings.
This is amazing. A really rare experience.

My favourite organist at the moment. I wasn't a fan of Messiaen but his recording converted me.
Wonderful, simply wonderful!
Dr Jacobs certainly is a *great* musician and a astonishing virtuoso. What a huge, exceptional memory!
Thanks NPR, I really enjoyed this!
THANK YOU from an admire
Beautiful -
it was such a enjoyment to hear this ankor after magnificent program at Haddonfield.
when it started i thought it would be boring, but it was impressive
its, of course, the greatness of Herr Bach and than comes the marcellous Paul Jacobs. Perfect combination!
Chills, the entire time.
the best organist in the world ,he is my friend! JB
when you see him in person he is simply Paul.
Who takes time out of their day to dislike this video?
Wow, I didn't know that was possible to achieve that level of awesome on the organ!
The best organist the best artist who won a Grammy in his early age. Congratulations to a virtuoso and to the International organist. You are flawless 😍 terrific magnificent. Your music is the best therapy for all souls and hearts.
NO WORDS NEEDED..
Pure Genius!

Well I saw one person here say they disliked this because it was too religious

@@karlrovey Well, Bach himself did write "S.D.G" on all of his works, meaning "Soli Deo Gloria/Glory to God alone", signifying that the work was produced for the sake of praising God.
This is why I subscribe
Fenomenal
damn. that is some serious multi-tasking.
Lot of people are snooty about electronics but they make proper viable home practice a reality. Looks like this is a small Allan organ. They make good stuff :)

mattbod At first I was disgusted by the sounds produced by the Allen, but the dry acoustic really benefits some of the heavier counterpoint later on, don’t get wrong Allen makes nice consoles, but for $17,000, you’d expect a bit more out of the sound. I guess it served it’s purpose.

I play a similar Allen regularly. In this recording, I already know it has some stops I don't have (such as reeds on the Great). My main complaint is that I don't have strong enough reeds on the swell to solo a hymn melody on the swell over the great chorus.
Check out the box set of LED ZEPPELIN behind him on the bookshelf!!
respect.
The tap dancing pianist rocks,
Just an idiot would dislike Dr. Paul Jacobs! He is the biggest king in all world a maester in Pipe organ! This is not the way how supose to be respected and his music is wonderful with lots of feelings and Compliment how he is playing feet and hands together! God bless him and his family!
Rock Star!
And I'm still struggling with right and left hand independence on the piano.............................wow great stuff!

How's that hand independence going 12 years on? Did you learn some Bach, that would have helped!
Did you hear about them opening Bachs crypt recently? They found him there erasing music. They asked him what he was doing and he said............................... "I'm decomposing!"
I am left in awe. =|
I love Bach, but I would really like to see Mr. Jacobs play pieces that he created himself. He could take his talent to a whole new level by innovating the way an organ is played, much like the way Edmar Castaneda did with the Colombian Harp.
@kevinfaulkner00 It's an Allen Protege, digital organ. They're actually pretty easy to move. We have one at my church and I can even lift it enough to put dollies under it. Definitely lighter than moving a piano.
Reminds me of the Golden Sauser music from FF7
THAT SHIT CRAY
I want to see a weird Booker T / Paul Jacobs organ duel...
@kevinfaulkner00 Its a digital.
Is this the same Paul Jacobs who released the album "Pictures, Movies & Apartments" independently? Or is this just a fun coincidence? Cause I dig the keys but I'm waiting for the garage rock to kick in
I am a good cook with excellent knife skills in the kitchen. Mine are as sharp as surgical scalpel blades because they are carbon steel. The "point" is this man would only get a dull butter knife at most from my kitchen with those fingers and extraordinary talent.

+rittervoneschenbach I am amending my statement so that it is more lucid, hopefully. This man is a genius. I wish that I could talk to him about Bach.
A organmusic
i reckon he looks like the kind of guy who would have taken it apart and reconstructed it there (just for the hell of it ) lol
Wasn't service wonderful this morning .
Gotta love the Dorks, they have the best commentary. I'm in lurve with this guy!

Is it him on your picture
does it say somewhere in the Bible! Love those who despitefully use you and say all manner against you? You are slipping somewhere Carina! If that person is saying something nasty about Paul pray for the the conviction of the Holy Spirit on that person, instead making a judgment call and trapping yourself in the hatred yourself!!
Leave it to Reger to fuck up a perfectly good composition by Bach.
The mordent, grace-notes and trill at the begining of 577 I continue thoughout the whole work, including mordents in the pedal. Disappointed that Paul does not.
ok enough church music! ...or is fair ground tunes.....i wonder about NPR some times. I know music is for everyone with all tastes but this is too religious sounding to me.....I need run a mile!!!

That's funny. Not a single piece played is actually church music. The Arioso is a transcription from one of Bach's Cantatas and could be classified as sacred, but everything else is simply secular concert music.
