Pino Palladino + Blake Mills: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Музыка

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Nikki Birch | June 17, 2021
The studio backdrop of this Tiny Desk (home) concert is the perfect setting for the dynamic duo headlining this project. Pino Palladino is a prolific bassist whose sound you're already intimately acquainted with (even if you don't know it). Blake Mills, a guitarist and two-time Grammy nominee for producer of the year, has an impressive catalog of his own. Together, in the studio, the topshelf sidemen are in their element, distilling the sonic creativity that is the first release under Palladino's name, Notes With Attachments.
Eight pulsing calls from saxophonist Sam Gendel usher us into "Just Wrong" a melodic meditation that unfolds like a blossom in timelapse. Guitar, bass, sax and Abe Rounds' colorful dustings of percussion in this song are magical; we soar with the musicians through varied repetitions of the melody before they gently set us back on our feet. The afterimage of our flight is still fading away when Palladino greets the viewers with a short and sweet introduction before opening "Ekuté," a tune that explores traditional West African music, jazz and rock influences with a few modern touches of technology. "Djurkel," the final offering in this set, is also experimental in nature. Palladino's trademark bass sound lies in the cut, the fertile ground on which Mills, Gendel and Rounds dance dreamily around each other. This is session musicianship at its best. Each watch reveals new depths to the mastery.

As an unknown, Pino graced Numan’s excellent album, I Assassin, with fully developed melodies, chord progressions and song structures. The exceptional Mick Karn R.I.P. 🌹was either too expensive or uninterested at the time, not sure, but Pino did play somewhat similarly to Karn and Numan was very happy with Pino’s “pocket change” fee! Give I Assassin a listen, or a re-listen. It’s SO good 🌟

@@cardboardmusic I kind of agree. I love Blake Mills, but I don't see anyone producing a D'Angelo album appart of himself... Besides, making tea for your friends is cool. Daniel Lanois makes a killer lentil soup in his place in LA too :)

@@jas_bataille Hmm, sounds good. Lentil soup is always a welcome treat when you're taking a break in the studio, and, I love the work of Daniel Lanois. A perfect match.

Back from daily watching of this phenomenal set of music. Three masters layering textures around an all time great on the fretless. Just about as good as it gets.

Great musicianship. Pino knows how to get that fretless to sound great with palm mute and so many other techniques... he plays so softly with his picking fingers here to get that lovely understated tone.

I’d known about Pino since the 80s. I first got wind of him when he recorded and performed with Paul Young. I remember my ears immediately gravitating towards the bassist’s playing, and thought who is this guy, he’s doing some amazing stuff! Then, a few years later, I hear him on a few recordings with the Eagles Drummer Don Henley… even though I did not know who the bass player was on Don Henley‘s recordings, that bass sound was unmistakable. I knew right away that this was the same guy who played with Paul Young. He is a brilliant player, and legendary on all levels.
