Red Baraat: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
One of the best party bands around, Red Baarat plays rollicking funk music steeped in Northern India's wedding celebrations, with a dash of D.C. go-go beats and hip-hop. The dance-friendly group performs a loud, high-energy set at the NPR Music offices.
Set List:

Their second performance at tiny desk is outstanding but this one is still a melodic masterpiece. I'm glad I had searched these amazing artists a second time and got the pleasure to watch this. Amazing how they had growth even more their band presence. 👏
Blew my mind seeing a man of what appears indain descent playing a trumpet with a rock jazz style. Just amazing so clean so crisp but still commanding control and power.Love it.
DO NOT MISS the chance to see these guys live. Incredible. High energy dancing. How can you go wrong with nothing but drums and horns?
The Trumpet player is the BOMB!!
The trumbone and trumpet guys are killing it!!
Since I couldn't find em anywhere else, here are the musicians names Sunny Jain - Dhol Sony Singh - Trumpet Ernest Stuart - Trombone John Altieri - Tuba Tomas Fujiwara - Snare Alex Hamlin - Alto Sax MiWi La Lupe - Bass Trumpet Rohin Khemani - Additional Percussion
So cool! Earthlings can be wonderful.
They are absolutely incredible I just saw them in Easthampton MA!!!
Ho Dang that was awesome- like Desi funk plus NOLA marching band - made me want to dance.
saw them at Frostburg State University in the mountains of Western Maryland Fall of 2012...fell in love with them
Some context - This is typical marriage music in India. In fact the name Red Baraat literally translates to Red 'Marriage procession' (?) So when people get married here, there's a whole crew that goes along with the groom to the marriage site, while groom is mounted on a pony. THAT posse is called a Baraat. This is of course typical to Punjabi weddings though it has infiltrated into other cultures as well.
These guys have done a huge service to Bhangra. The reason why i love Bhangra is that Raw Energy that comes from the Dol and musicians. they kept that spirit alive while mixing in some Funk to compliment it really well. I mean really compliment it. in retrospect i can see how Funk and Bhangra can feed off with each well. Never realized it before though.
Sunny SIngh saab (and of course the rest of you!): You guys are doing God's work.
At Last, The Good Old Indian Punjabi music with a twist in US of A.
That trombone player is incredible. I just love his soloing and style.

Hands down the best live band for dancing-- saw them in Brooklyn's Fort Greene Park this week. The music was an amazing mix of bhangra, jazz, and go-go beats! Best free park concert EVER!
The spirit of NOLA's second line !!!
No idea who these guys were until today. After seeing them on a bill for a show I will be attending Friday. So awesome, cannot wait
Was looking for something to do on a weekend with my husband and found this amazing band. They killed it!! Now I'm obsessed!
Just saw them live last night. Percussion section is even more amazing with the full drumset, timbales, and extras! Such a powerful and loud percussion section! And the Sousaphone was slamming through the P.A. See these guys live if you can!

+Donkeytron64 I think one of the reasons I like party bands with limited percussion is because it show's the musicians ability to make the most out of little.
Just saw them at Del Fest.... I could not stop moving!
Everything I LOVE in a band plus my DC GoGo Beat. Chop, Baby, Chop. Here we go nahw. Make an old feel like spitting some verse. Peace be upon each of you and tha band. I'll be making noise at your next concert.
I went to a show in Manhattan and I loved. This guys are amazing
Just saw them at preform at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. So good.
Lovely to see how far the production quality of tiny desk has come, but the music has always been amazing
Excellent. This is why I come to Tiny Desk! Some have said that they never heard anything like this, but there are a few more I would suggest from Tiny Desk. Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars, and Dave Douglass Brass Ecstasy. Hope you enjoy.
One of the grooviest groups I've ever heard! Amazing!
Glad these guys will be playing in Pittsburgh Friday night, June 14th!
Absolutely love the power of this group. Only thing I would have liked more would be to keep the vocal solo from the second song, otherwise it's absolutely incredible.
saw them at festival international in Louisiana. totally. epic.
Awesome performance...Just awesome...
Was attracted by the horns coming from the revival tent. Awesome show at Wakarusa! New fan because of it!
Great performance at Louisville yesterday!
the nominee for the craziest office!!
So hip and fresh. Love the mix of instruments.
Miwi's killin' it on Shruggy Ji!!
Nice trumpet solo!! :D
Everyone at work just got a taste of this
New discovery for me - great funky stuff
I don't dislike the brass, but I want more of the drums!
Awesome, a lot of energy!! funky great great great!!! :)
What the shit. This is too damn dope. The Indian fellow on the trumpet splits my wig.
Wow. Great fusion. Thank you NPR.
Love these guys! Bringing the energy.
Super cool!
Red Baraat's new album "Gaadi of Truth" out NOW!!!
Sunny - Amazing Son!
Those are damn near the exact words that came out of my mouth.
Don't know why anyone would want to stop.
Love this. Plus, John Turturro on snare and Samuel L. Jackson on t-bone. What's not to like?
Impeccable. I look forward to hearing their soundtrack on a Disney movie. They are simply awesome. I LOVE the diversity. I am truly feeling this group.
This is awesome!
Whattttttttttttttttt! love it!
damn. killer sop solo
Who @12:40 is bored enough to be checking their email during this amazing set!? That must've been one important email...
As a Louisianian, that made me LOL!
The dude on the far right with the big beard is a Wes Anderson regular. Darjeeling Limited, Life Aquatic, Grand Budapest Hotel - he plays in them all.

Santhosh Daniel Don't be so spiteful as I never even mean any racial offense. Of course, SJWs can't help but instill racial tension.
I am so hooked. I love the union of voices, ethnicities through music.
Man that trombone player tho.
The middle eastern version of Trombone shorty and Orleans Avenue. (The other way around too of course :) )
THAT SOUSAPHONE THOUGH! BOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM!
@nprmusic I wish my school could play these songs .
This is unlike anything i've ever hear before! It's as if the USC marching band met and had a baby with Ravi Shankar and then meanwhile New Orleans big band music met and had a baby with rap music and by some miracle those too babys met and FUCKED we'd find ourselves listening to this music!
If you're sweating while playing music, then you're doing it right.
Super
🔥🔥 Who is listening this all the time This voice is Wonderful 0:35 💘❤ 👇👇👇👇💘
@LexHills1: they're on a European tour in July. Their booking agency is jaro.de. Good Luck, as far as I know, they still have some open dates.
wow!!!!
Breaking down walls and shaking on down.
cool
This is New Orleans type music.
Wahnsinnshammersouund!
Please pass the red beans and curried rice!
hot hot hot
@herralmer Many thanks for your help, but was rather hoping someone might be able to suggest a home-grown band (closer to Brighton, UK) similar to these guys who might be able to perform at my mate's wedding in July 2012 (and for a 10th of the price, needless to say!) but I guess I'm asking the impossible :-(
You guys should seriously look up Blaas of Glory!
muy bueno
I like the idea but they still have a long way to go.
How can I get tickets to go see the groups that perform at the Tiny Desk?
Please come to my office!!!
Masala Gumbo.
Can anyone, PLEEEEEAZE, recommend a band similar to these guys who might be willing to perform at a wedding reception in Brighton (UK) in July 2012??? Long shot I know, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, if you can help!!! Anyone??? Any ideas???!!!! xxx
HEEEEY OOOOH HEEEEEEY OOOOH
I see the Nawlins and marching band styles, but Ravi Shankar??? Sure there are a couple of Indian guys in the group, but no Shankar sounds here. Totally different man.
they came to my school to play a few mini shows, and almost of them are wearing the same clothes, haha. i thought that was funny.
The drums are stronger at a show.
Thought the guy in the dreadlocks was going to bust out the Shaggy Reggae :D
best fucking band right next to gogol bordello
i just thought the same fuckin thing!
aw c'mon NPR folks, don't clap on 1+3! you should know better!
What kind of mouthpiece is the trumpet player using?
*South Asian
Cruious (very little irony intended) as to N.O. street music that has similar bhangra melodies/rhythms. Confess I'm relatively ignorant.
Sorry, I meant "Trombone Shorty".........got him mixed up with "Tuba Skinny"!
Wait ....... What happened to Obama?
Oi! Bhangra is Punjabi!! Ravi did play North Indian Classical, but not Bhangra!
sounds nothing like anything Raavi Shankar would do. I guess your references to indian music are limited. It's more indian wedding music or a baraat.
Nothing new. New Orleans street music. Listen to "Trombone Skinny" for the same sound. Where's the Asian/Pakistani melody lines?
