Shabazz Palaces: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Oct. 23, 2017 | Rodney Carmichael -- "... Only the exalted come in and rock with us."
With those words, spoken in the opening moments of Shabazz Palaces' Tiny Desk performance, Palaceer Lazaro (aka Ishmael Butler, also of Digable Planets fame) lays the ground rules for all present to enter the group's metaphysical headspace.
And, man, talk about being transported to the other side. It's impossible not to envision the Seattle studio, Black Space Labs, where Shabazz's otherworldly soundscapes emerge to provide the ideal backdrop for shining a light on the fake.
From the beginning, with 2011's Black Up, Shabazz's practice has been steeped in black magic of a different order. The same proves true on its latest two releases, the conceptual Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines and Quazarz: Born On A Gangster Star. Leave it to hip-hop's unorthodox lot to conceive an ambitious pairing that launches the narrative's protagonist on an interstellar journey far from home. It's the perfect proxy for the growing sense of alienation we're all suffering, to some degree or another, in today's space and time.
While the premise of Tiny Desk usually involves artists stripping down their set, Shabazz Palaces' entire steelo is about unplugging from the metaphorical matrix, and sometimes a hybrid of digital-analog plugins is exactly what it takes to navigate alternate dimensions.

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.
A spacey treat for the people. One love, Shabazz Palaces!
So Ishmael is going to be fine all of our lives?

'Nerd Music' ?!? 🤔 Hmmm never had a word for my hiphop taste but 'nerd music" explains it exactly... Erykah Badu definitely has a similar "taste " --- Jay Electronica, Ish Buttafly, Andre3000... def considered "nerd music" to sum... its REAL hiphop

What that movie _needs_ is about seven to twelve *THOMAS MAPFUMO* classics!!!!!!! 😁 Always hoped Danai Jekesai Gurira would be making that suggestion to Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, and the ears that matter. Mbira sounds...🎶
Steely Dan of Hip Hop. So smooth and even better live.
Butterfly's still got it. Love live Digable Planets. Shabazz Palaces is as experimental as hip hop gets. Visionaries.
i love how ish won a couple grammies when he was like 19 and chilled and this is what he is making now that he's 40+
Never heard of this group before, I really like the sound. Thanks NPR Tiny desk!

I work there and hes a perfect gentleman as well. Known him 7 years. Calls me by my name and says hello every time. You'd never know that hes a literal legend if you just ran into him.
Funky spaced-out, boundary pushing goodness massaging my eardrums. It ain’t for everybody and that’s a good thing!

My cheeks hurt from smiling through this set. This is so dope!!!
Yes, "Shine a Light!" Love this one, especially!
I thought people that came to this channel were supposed to be into experiencing new things and hearing new sounds. Seems really pretentious to dismiss someone’s work just because you don’t understand or relate to it.

ayo let's just say this...if someone disses or misses Shabazz Palaces thats on them. And the fact that 9 months I am here and the top comments are all positive just prove the point.

I’m struggling too find the attraction. Sounds really awful.
There is talent here whether people choose to recognize it or not. All the negative & hateful comments are so unnecessary. I have to admit I do get a chuckle out of the things some of you took time out of your day to sit there & write. It's all love, remember that - this platform is for literally EVERYONE.

Isra Sabir We also have to remember it’s art. I don’t like Picasso, so I get a lot of grief from art lovers. Saying a platform is for everyone is like saying we should all be Christian in the US. If you don’t like it, then it’s not for you. I love it btw.

Isra Sabir Apologies...I thought you meant his music. Tiny desk concerts is my favorite channel on KZread. I Must agree with you whole heartedly that it is for everyone. I even like music on here that I don’t like the original mix that the artist recorded.

Peanutbutter jellyfish I figured that you thought that (it's why I clarified), lol - but yes I completely agree with you. I LOVE tiny desk mixes as well
going to see these on friday. can't wait
This is the only "hip hop/trapp" I can listen to, because it's so much more than that. These guys belong in an art gallery more so than a studio.
Innovative, and stimultating, keep doing it!!!!!!
Oh god, this is the free jazz version of rap.

Exactly, its awesome.
Dope to see Ish AKA Butterfly still making music. Inspiration indeed.
This isn’t their best performance for sure, but if you’re into experimental hip-hop, I’d check out their album Black Up from earlier this decade. Definitely some of the best experimental hip-hop out there.

I think that the problem lies in how it was miked. His voice is so forward and everything else sounds murky, unfortunately. The KEXP performances sound more dynamic. "Shine a light" though... so gorgeous
I just saw Planet Brooklyn (aka Men Without Jobs) again after 10+ years. Ishmael, Bones Malone, Andre Royo and Reg E Cathey as his dad. It's a really inspiring movie about struggling artists.
Absolute legends in the game. Fantastic set, wish they could've played one or two more!!
Saw them in 2012 at the wiltern in LA and mannnnn I fell in love with their music
Me after listening a while when tabbed into another page: "Shi, this dude is just bitin' Digable Planets..." Me a minute later: "Come think of it it's uncanny... his voice is..." --> *Checking description* ... "Nvm" Last track was tight!
Style... "néo-spoken world"...? très plaisant à écouter. Merci
DIGABLE PLANETS
Out there. Love it.
so dope
amazing poetry and haunting sounds... the lead guy, Palaceer Lazaro, has great style all around.
Ummm I had to stop a min in and say I loooooove Black men. Dope music too!

This set was incredible
Niiiice I love their kexp stuff
Amazing!
God levels right here, this is beautiful music
Reminds me of Outkast's Elevators (Me & U) rap song style and Ishmael's flow reminds me of Andre 3000. I ❤ it!
That's the dude from digable planets! Glad to see he's still making music
The Greates Stuff Everr!!!! When I raved and told everyone about Glenn O'Brien's TV Party and had a Downtown '81 (Basquiat) mini viewing hangout , I real eyesed only a selected few would draw the same inspiration. "Main Streamers" just gonna Main Stream. This performance is really really special to me.. Very Roy Ayers'ish to me.. Only a select few are gonna be inspired.. Hope I'm not sounding like a douche bag...
Really interesting. Wish I could hear Miles Davis in this ensemble.
not their best material, but still love me some shabazz palaces!
This here is the man.....Digable that...I would have loved to work with him..An absolute master at his craft...Its long overdue for the resurrection
Ishmael Butterfly Butler = Legend
Don’t get scared by the first 2 songs - or fast forward but you have to listen to Shine a Light. Nice set!
