Slowdive: NPR Music Field Recordings
Музыка
By Stephen Thompson
Before a month-and-change ago, Slowdive hadn't released an album in 22 years. So you'd be forgiven for watching the band perform "Sugar For The Pill" and struggling to pin down what era you're in - especially since NPR Music plopped the group in a playfully retro Brooklyn shuffleboard parlor for the occasion.
In the early '90s, Slowdive dressed up shoegaze's hazy drift with jolts of energy and a chiming dream-pop shimmer. The band lasted only three albums before splitting up in 1995, at which point members Neil Halstead and Rachel Goswell formed the more countrified Mojave 3. Now, after reuniting in 2014, it's back with a self-titled album that picks up where it left off - but, while it conjures many signifiers of '90s college radio, the band's return album freshens the project up, too, with bright, impeccable songcraft. A patient mid-tempo gem that's as hooky as it is hypnotic, "Sugar For The Pill" is a particular highlight, so it's a joy to watch the reconstituted band trot it out for this Field Recording, filmed at Royal Palms Shuffleboard in Brooklyn.
The band will be on tour through the summer and fall.

This is going to sound cheesy... But seeing them now, after all these years, looking older, less glamorous, more rugged, just makes it more beautiful. They're people that live lives outside of each album release, each tour, they live their own lives between it all. You see the humans behind the music career.

Not cheesy. For some great music comes from lived experience. Neil does not look 47. Rachael, however, is showing her age, as most of us are.

They’ll always be relevant to me, especially in the autumn where that first blast of cool air comes back to greet us.
Slowdive is still one of my favorite bands.
"Sugar for the Pill" was actually my introduction to Slowdive, and so now I'm discovering "Souvlaki Space Station", "Machine Gun", and other great songs.

Me too, mate. Love this song and need to see what else I've missed all these years. Love from Australia.
This is my favourite version of this song. The relatively stripped down arrangement really lets the bass and vocals shine through.
the more minimal sound of this performance paired with shots of the lonely venue makes for a nice video
Nick is so awesome. The Bass line in this is just sick....
Saw them a few weeks ago and it was hands down the greatest show I've ever been to
The baby I’m minding loves this song and dances every time she hears it
Honestly had to go Google to make sure it was the same band I loved in my youth. So great they're back.
Just bought a ticket to see them play in Denver in November. Problem is ...I live in Utah. I'll deal with the logistics later. So stoked to see Slowdive. My teenage self wouldn't believe that I would ever see them play. Dreams come true. Cool cool yeah yeah.

Un minuto de silencio por toda la gente que aún no conoce a esta maldita canción y banda
Slowdive never really did it for me back in the day... but damn, I am IN LOVE with the new album.
It is like wine. Keep getting older, please. Thanks.
I was there back in the day - this is better than they every did back then. Weird tearing sensation. I fucking love this. I've watched it about 4000 times.
Thank u so much NPR for wake up my sense of music
Just incredible. Beautiful.
They sound Amazing!
I can listen to this all day long.

This is amazing.
Every morning I'm waking up to this song :)
Absolutely beautiful.
I'm not crying. You are.
Great song from a fantastic album. Lots of Strymon and Eventide in there
I just discovered these guys. Makes sense i loved it right away, I was a Cocteau Twins fan.
was obsessed when they first grouped. still am to this day.
I LOVE THIS BAND SO MUCH! 💕
i have played this video more than 10x already
Beautiful!
absolutely fantastic.
This is without a doubt my favorite slowdive song....this band got better with age...God bless them and thank you!
One of the few bands that actually probably sound better older than their younger selves.
Slowdive was always that "other band" who I thought cool and bought their albums, only to play Lush, Cocteau Twins and MBV more. Today, so very glad their music is being validated by so many artists that play their style. Souvlaki Space Station would be an indie hit today
Alegría para el alma ❤ (Y un poco de melancolía)
Thank you so much 😀👌
How come I never knew this band? I'm bloody old enough!
gets better with every listen !!!!!!
They are so cute!! So talented too, they sound awesome!
I just love NPR

Lyrics: There's a buzzard of gulls They're drumming in the wind Only lovers alive Running in the dark And I rolled away Said we never wanted much Just a rollercoast' Our love has never known the way Sugar for the pill You know it's just the way things are Cannot buy the sun This jealousy will break the whole Cut across the sky And move a little closer now Lying in a bed of greed You know I had the strangest dream And I rolled away Said we never wanted much Just a rollercoast' Our love has never known the way Sugar for the pill You know it's just the way things are Cannot buy the sun This jealousy will break the whole And I rolled away Said we never wanted much Just a rollercoast' Our love has never known the way Sugar for the pill You know it's just the way things are Cannot buy the sun This jealousy will break the whole
