March 4, 2020 | Suraya Mohamed -- "I hope that you can enjoy this music because it can be heavy," drummer and bandleader Terri Lyne Carrington told the NPR crowd gathered for this Tiny Desk. "We've tried to figure out a way to make it feel good and still give these messages."
In the jazz world, Carrington is a celebrity - a 40-year professional musician who's won Grammy awards and performed with a seemingly infinite list of jazz dignitaries such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Geri Allen. An outspoken activist, teacher and mentor, she is also the founder and artistic director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, a multidisciplinary program whose motto is "Jazz Without Patriarchy."
Carrington visited the Desk with her current band, Social Science, a collaboration with pianist Aaron Parks and guitarist Matthew Stevens (both performing here). In the works for some time, their project culminated in 2016 when the cultural divisiveness brought on by the presidential election inspired the trio to take action. "I think there's an awakening happening in society in general," Carrington writes on her website, "I feel a calling in my life to merge my artistry with any form of activism that I'm able to engage in."
This performance features music from the band's new album, Waiting Game. It's story-filled, groove-music performed by a group of accomplished musicians who improvise, rap and sing over complex but highly crafted and accessible instrumental motifs. A perfect synthesis of jazz, indie rock and hip-hop influences, the four songs they played address important, culturally relevant protest narratives: mass incarceration, collective liberation, police brutality and Native American genocide.
The third tune, "Bells (Ring Loudly)," written by Parks and Carrington, features actor Malcolm Jamal Warner who also wrote the spoken word. Carrington had just seen the Philando Castile shooting and her powerful lyrics imagined what she would say to the offending police officer.
"You took my love away from me.
I wanna know how did it feel to watch him tremble and bleed.
Tell me what gives you the right to kill so senselessly?
And when you're alone do you ever think of him or pray for his peace?"
"There is so much we can be angry about but you can't really stay there," Carrington told NPR. "Instead, you can reach somebody on a human level."

For anyone who doesn't know, Terri Lynne (drummer/bandleader/composer) has been a heavyweight in jazz drumming for decades. She's put out several albums under her own name, sat in the drum chair for legends like Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, worked with Esperanza Spalding and many, many more. She is considered one of the finest drummers in modern jazz music.

I'm late to this. But thanks!
She knows how to play softly and still MEAN IT!
For me, Terri Lyne Carrington is the greatest drummer on the planet. Others may do it differently and also express virtuosity on the instrument, but Miss Carrington is a unique source of inspiration. Thank you NPR.
Man, the guitarist and bassist/saxophone player toured with Esperanza Spalding and they are incredible musicians! The entire band here is such a powerful combination of some of best musical minds alive today. Incredible
Wow, Debo Ray's voice is KILLER.
For those who don't know, Terri Lynne Carrington is the drummer. She was amazing even when she was 9.

Like a journey through every kind of music wrapped around a gripping documentary
Terri Lyne´s touch and dynamics on the cymbals is astounding .... this is real Jazz !!!!!
Terry is a master and an amazing human. Of course, her band is insane. Love it.
This is the most sincere music I've heard and seen that utilized Rap in it's fusion. That drummer is great, I'll never forget her work over the years. The very definition of supportive musicianship everyone supporting each other. Powerful lyrics to let you know where your heart stands immediately.
Mrs Carrington holding this whole thing together with her sticks and inspiring these great young musicians.
That note at 2:38 - OMG! But Terri Lynne... always amazing. I had no idea she was working with a new group. I hope to see her play live one day.
Terri is a HEAVY WEIGHT on drums. All you old heads may remember her cutting it up on the Arsenio Hall show from the 90's hey day late night show. This was a great performance by all. World class musicians on display. Thanks NPR! By the way, good to see you Malcolm (Theo from the Cosby Show). You look GREAT young blood. This was a treat for me.
Debo Ray's voice is a FORCE
On every level imaginable, this is HEAVY. On a purely drum geek level, Terri Lyne Carrington is giving a clinic in how to serve the music while sounding nasty and full of personality.

You nailed it!
Tiny Desk is THE place to go if you're serious about finding truly exceptional, meaningful music. I was convinced of that from the first note of the first concert I saw (Coffee). I'm even more convinced now.
This was beautiful, all of them did their thing, but man that piano really just picks you up and drifts you along the stream of their words
For the older crowd she was also the drummer for the "Arsenio Hall" show back in the 90s.

I have such fond memories of watching Matt Stevens playing guitar on Esperanza Spaulding's 77-hour Exposure livestream! he's a beast!
This is so broad! Rapping over progressive rhythms. Terri is so on time we set our clocks to her. Dèbo is so beautiful, voice so deep and rich! Great features!
Having just seen Mr. Warner on Sneaky Pete, brother can act. Also all of this was really great. I think I could watch Ms. Terri drum all day. Thank you NPR.
Beautiful band, very interesting project! Very good artists..and Terry Lyne Carrington is an idol of drums, for me! She inspires me.. A Great Jazz drummer! Thanks!
How many times I've been back here I've lost count. Absolutely one of the most powerful performance! ETA: In the 10 months since I'd been watching this performance regularly, the racial situation in America and police violence has just gotten worse. The messages for peace and tolerance here has become more urgent.
Satisfyingly haunting and thought provoking. Another shout out to Tiny Desk crew, as the piano sound was exquisite! What an Incredible mix!
She is going to theater without a doubt! F*cken WOW! Such a rare act, true sophistication.

I enjoyed SO much every second of this. But the first song was very very impressive. Captivating. Even scary, confrontative, unsettling. I remember watching Terri Lyne perform in Panama in 2017 and her performance was one of the strongest I've ever seen, of any kind. Thank you once again tiny desk!!!!

The reason why is simple. It would call for accountability and actually hearing what Black people have been saying for centuries. Cognitive dissonance won't allow that. There were nothing but truths and Black realities in those lyrics.
