"A Song Of Loyalty, Before It's Tested"
Joy Williams and John Paul White call their Grammy-winning band The Civil Wars, but the two have built a gentle, harmony-rich folk-pop sound in which warm chemistry more than counteracts the tension under the music's surface. Though not a couple themselves - each is married, and Williams just had a baby - they convey many hallmarks of a loving union, particularly in the way she stares at him sweetly as they sing.
As most Civil Wars fans know by now, Williams and White recently announced that they've canceled all of their current tour dates in response to "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition." This, naturally, has fueled talk of a breakup - the assurance that "our sincere hope is to have new music for you in 2013" doesn't specify whether that music would be made together or separately - which is a pretty crummy development for one of the most amiably appealing (not to mention best-selling) new bands to pop up in ages.
Recorded in presumably happier times - during the Sasquatch! Music Festival in George, Wash., this past summer - this Field Recording captures the pair amid backstage grapevines as they sing beautifully between gusts of wind. In a bit of sad irony, the song they play ("Kingdom Come") is a reassuring ode to loyalty in hard times: "Don't you fret, my dear / It'll all be over soon," they sing in unison. "I'll be waiting here / For you."
Here's hoping. -- STEPHEN THOMPSON

Honestly don't know what all the negativity is about. Regardless of their internal issues, they both compliment each other beautifully, and frankly, I find Joy's movement and passion incredibly inspiring... NOT manipulative/annoying/unprofessional. It's obvious that they both put their souls into the music. Some of the most genuine music making I've ever seen.

She is incredible. So is John Paul. They are so different but thats why they compliment each other so well. What they have in common is 'living in music' when they perform. I have never heard performances as intimate as theirs. It's like looking inside their little private world, which they gracefully allowed us to do for three amazing years. Two shooting stars indeed...

If that one mic and a bit of audio editing in post is all they are using, that is fascinating! 😱 I mean, The Civil Wars sound even better live already anyways, but that wind cancellation and still able to get that clean of a sound, unbelievable!

No miracle fix for the wind noise which is evident at the start, sadly. Once the performance starts the audio is 100% overdubbed; if you look closely at the performance you can see a few things that make it obvious, like how he manages to continue defined fingerpicking whilst brushing a strand of hair out of his eyes :P

Actually no, that audio is coming from that mic. How do I know? Because pay attention at the beginning when she grabs the falling mic. If the audio had been from that mic, you would have heard a big THUMP when she grabbed the mic stand. Thus the audio at the beginning had to be coming from the camera's built in mic. Having done field recordings in the past for film work I know that those fluffy wind screens work quite well. You can tell also that they did quite a bit of mastering to the recording on top of that. The NPR audio engineers are some of the best in the business. As for the parts out of sync, that has more to do with the video editing guy who got a bit sloppy. It's his job to sync the video cuts to the music. At any rate I'm also now extremely curious about what mic they used as they got a fantastic sound overall from it.

I have no idea whether it's just part of the performance, or whether she's really messing with him. Not my concern either way. They're artists; all I care about is their work. Their songs, and their performances of them, are phenomenal, and her stagecraft (if that's what it is) is part of it. I join everyone else in joy (as it were) at the prospect of their getting back together; terrible waste if they don't. Further deponent sayeth not.
