The Oh Hellos: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

December 8, 2015 by BOB BOILEN
When The Oh Hellos piled out of a van at NPR, someone remarked that it was like a clown car: Band members just kept coming, including brother and sister Tyler and Maggie Heath and their mom. They were all road-weary, trading sniffles, coughs and more. But the nine-piece group brought anthemic joy to the Tiny Desk in the form of buoyant songs whose underpinnings could still be dark and lonely.
Some of the music here is from The Oh Hellos' recent second album, Dear Wormwood, which was inspired in part by the writings of C.S. Lewis; it's about a protagonist who doubts a relationship before finding the resolve to never look back. Still, for all the deep sentiment, the band brings the same jubilant energy it brought to its performance at the Newport Folk Festival in July - even now that summer fun has given way to winter germs. Fortunately, the only contagion you'll encounter here is joy.
Dear Wormwood is available now.

A while back I was at a concert in Austin and a really nice guy came up and started a conversation with me. I asked him what he did and he said “I play violin for a band called The Oh Hellos.” Cool to see him looking just as happy here as he was talking with me. Rare to meet such a genuinely nice person.

He says that the performance of Exeunt is more impressive with the full setup, but this version is my favorite. The energy it holds is more raw and personal, and the full group singing "I have set my mind and my will" helps release that energy. It has been building through the song as the reasons to leave have become more and more clear, and with that burst of strength and resolve, the clarity of the final "I am Leaving" is properly driven home I have nothing but love for this song, and this version is the best I have heard

I've been a musician forever and probably the biggest challenges to playing in a band and playing original music is that you always have the issue of egos that can mess everything up. Someone overplays or plays too loud. They want to be in the spotlight. I would guess this issue is what prevents most bands from making it. And the more members you have, the greater the chance of having a problematic ego. But all these band members listed here in the Oh Hellos obviously set their egos aside order to make beautiful music. This tells you so much of what they're probably like as people. You know they're each quality people that you'd want to be around and get to know.

2:05 "Don't you worry because in there you're safe, and it's true you'll never beat but you'll never break" *Did you know* this was likely inspired by this Lewis quote? ... "To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.” ― C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

Wow! It's amazing how they sound just as good live in this video as they do on the record. I wish more bands these days would share the same passion for variety in instrumentals. The various musicians synchronize so well with one another and the vocals harmonize beautifully! God has blessed you guys (The Oh Hellos) and I praise God for that! It would be really neat to hear some praise songs.

My heart is so full right now! I saw them live at Wooly's in Iowa. One of the most dynamic performances I've been to! They put passion in every song. None are mediocre. My wife couldn't go because she was sick and she's the one that got me into them. Tyler and Maggie graciously allowed me to record a video of them saying hi to her and saying how bummed they were that she couldn't come. I became husband of the year that night!!! Haha
