The Secret Sisters: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
September 12, 2016 by NICK MICHAEL • Lydia and Laura Rogers are recognizable as sisters the minute they open their mouths. They float, twist and trade harmonies in ways only siblings can. Hailing from small-town Alabama, the pair started practicing parts as girls in church, and two decades later, their music can be hymn-like: plain but powerful, heartsick and hopeful.
They also throw back to secular songs: those of the Everly Brothers, bluegrass creator Bill Monroe and country godfather Hank Williams. In fact, all but two songs on The Secret Sisters' first (self-titled) album were covers of traditionals or traditional country songs. On their second album, Put Your Needle Down, the Rogers sisters wrote more songs themselves and brought a tinge of darkness, especially in standout tracks like "Bad Habit" and "Iuka."
Now chipping away at their third album, the sisters are still mining their Alabama roots. In this performance, you'll hear an unreleased river ballad ("Tennessee River Runs Low"), some old-fashioned loneliness ("You've Got It Wrong") and one of the few minor hymns in the church songbook ("Flee As a Bird").

This is what music is supposed to be. Regardless of the genre, real talent & songwriting are essential.

They are good beyond good
They're on Brandi Carlisle's record label. They opened for Brandi on the tour. I was lucky enough to see them live in Phoenix in August. I predict they'll be getting popular sooner than later.
100% harmony. Oh my. I'm in love with them.
Beautiful women with beautiful eyes and hauntingly beautiful voices and harmonies. I love NPR Tiny Desk for introducing me to such wonderful artists.
They’re voices are so beautiful, wish to see them in concert any day

That is the cleanest guitar tone in the world. They are perfect pitch too! Can't wait to see them again!
Harmony so tight
I adore them so much. Their whole vibe. So excited for their next album.
I have been listening to this video a lot. The richness of their harmonization is gorgeous, these two ladies clearly have a ton of experience singing with each other. I hope to hear an album of theirs with this bare-bones sound come out some day.
"Whilst the most beautiful of the two, are on each side... the best voice of Them both is in the middle." - gilpin 121616
so glad i clicked on this!
Beautiful!! The harmonies..aah! So lovely!
I choose this over happy music every time
They were also featured on John Paul White's (ex-The Civil Wars) latest album: Beluah, on the song "I've been over this before."
Nothing better than sibling harmonies!
Please release the first song! You both are so amazing and the one is just another feather in your caps! I love your music!
These ladies opened for Punch Brothers on the last tour I caught, and they were just as wonderful as they are here! So happy to hear their music again!

Now the lot of them need to go back in time and open for The Mamas and the Papas!
If I were born to be a river If a river is all I'd be I'd tell the giver of all of the rivers To make me the Tennessee How many drops of rain roll of how many windowpanes Down to a valley low where a river like me begins to grow I sing a mournful song as I rush a ramble along I bury secrets deep I keep them down where the catfish creep Where the rolling tide can't reach the things that I hide I hum a mournful tune in the Alabama June And I sing Even the Tennessee river runs low When the sky is bright and clear Not a cloud above you You can float in knowing, dear That I was made to love you When the storm is raging All the light is fading The river sings along with me Reaching for that minor key Color me blue and gray River, carry me fast away Flood all the rocks and grills On for the mighty hill I am the Tennessee See you down at the stormy sea And I sing Even the Tennessee river runs low The Tennessee river runs low Even the Tennessee river runs low
So I was watching this video of a guy woodworking in his shop and he used this version of Flee As a Bird in it, and I HAD TO FIND THIS. So glad I did.
I love them, even some covers they do in a beautiful way I like it better than the original sometimes. 😍
Go see them live! It's something special seeing them live.
Flee as a bird to your mountain Thou who are weary of sin Go to the clear flowing fountain Where you may wash and be clean Fly for the adventure is near thee Call and the savior will hear thee He on his bosom will bear thee Thou who are weary of sin Oh thou who are weary of sin He will protect me forever Wipe every falling tear He will forsake me oh never Sheltered oh so tenderly there Haste now the hours are flying Spend all your moments inside Cease from your sorrow and crying The savior will wipe every tear The savior will wipe every tear

These two girls sound great. I like every song I've heard
I had the pleasure of seeing these wonderful humans in Islington a few years back, and I love them! ❤️❤️❤️
I only heard these two voices for the first time a month or so ago. It still applies: these voices fit together.......magnificently.......naah.......what's better than magnificent?
I love the beautiful Tennessee river, AND I love yall.
perfect harmony. good songwriting.
Wow! I had another video on and was listening more than watching. The video ended and I reached for my iPad to play something else. Before I could bring up the search bar to type, these ladies voices began to flow out of the speakers. Needless to say, whatever I was going to listen to next took a backseat to this amazing talent. One of my favorite things is when you accidentally stumble across some group that you know you’ll be listening to for years and you only just discovered them. Beautiful talent! I love it!
Such a gorgeous blending of voices! ❤️
Love their voices and harmonies, beautiful !

Wow.. so glad I clicked on this video.. instant fan. Beautiful!
so splendid perfect voice, how lovely they are.
Been so hooked on The Secret Sisters the last week or so! Wow!!! Just wish I had discovered them sooner 🥰
Lovely. Makes me want to watch old movies. So cool to see the young people playing songs without computers and loopers and such. Not that modern music isn't valid, it is and I love much of it... but, wow, the minimal approach to music/songs... is just where it's at, ultimately. At least for me! Vintage music blues/hymns/etc... ya.. Thanks for posting!
Amazing voices
Lovely voices
