Valerie June: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Short of seeing her live and in person, this is the best way to encounter Valerie June's heartfelt sound. Her new album Pushin' Against a Stone is terrific, but when I first heard that voice unadorned, I was hooked. The same may happen to you.
Valerie June is a singular performer with an array of singing styles. Sometimes she's channeling an old male voice; at other times, she channels a younger woman or even a child. Her music is steeped in tradition. The striking Tennessee singer - on its own, her hair could pass for sculpture - can sing the blues or gospel or country or a blend that sounds like nothing else. She learned how to sing during 18 years of church, but the "old man's voice" comes from deep inside in unexpected ways. Prepare to be surprised, and to become Valerie June's newest fan. --BOB BOILEN

I never comment on videos, but I played a music festival last night, and Valerie June was next up after us. I have no words. Okay, I do: love, light, grace, joy. She held the audience in her hand, and hugged each and every one with her voice. New fan for life.

Exactly!!! She is brilliant an unique. She should be a big star.
Not only is she incredibly talented, her personal style is rad!
I could watch her for hours. she is something so rare and genuine and lovely.
I've got the working man's blues right now but this is putting a smile on my face... hell, this is so good I just might even do a rain dance and find somebody to love today. Thanks NPR and Val.
How she went under my radar for so many years I'll never know. Now I'll never forget. Thanks Val
Shes taking me back, back. I did a final in college 18 years ago on how hymnals, gospel, country, and blues were are connected and she sounds EERILY similar to field hymnals that African Americans used to sing during slavery while working in the fields.
It hasn't been since Tracy Chapman, that I've enjoyed a folk artist so much. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Yes.
Such a voice: unique, authentic, southern and a bee charmer for sure.
love this old root sound. Great to hear a young artist pull from that tradition and bring it into this fast moving high tech world.
This is some of the best 10 minutes a human can spend watching something.

And the look she gives to someone at 3:25 makes me believe in God.
I just wonder what Dolly Parton would say (or do) if she heard this woman's songs and her singing them. How could she not love the sound--the soul--the energy and life a lot like Dolly grew up in. I know all about that tiny, rural life.

In an interview posted on his website, Bob Dylan said he’d been listening to June, whose latest album, The Order of Time, is a blend of spacey hippie soul, blues and folk with June’s pinched, modern-Appalachian voice at the center. “I lost it,” June says of the Dylan shout-out.

@@_AtomicAngie_ I'm completely with you. She's quite a new discovery for me but I think she's fantastic.
I'm in love. Takes me back to the beautiful time before I was born, and to places I've never been.
I love her voice and I'm mostly mainstream hip hop R&B fan but there's something so organic and simple about her voice I think it's beautiful.
STANDING OVATION. She is amazing.
Shes got an old soul....and a sweet, sweet heart.
I just fell in love with a voice on Spotify, then came to put a face with that voice. Now I’m head over heals.
Somebody To Love just about breaks your heart....and she gives 100% of herself. Thank you Ms June.
Listened to this 2 years ago and my feelings haven't changed. This is one of my favorites.
I remember when this sweet girl came into the coffee shop I was assistant manager at (while putting myself thru college). She was 16 & had just left home (MS). We worked together for about 2 years & I saw her off and on after that. During all that time I heard her sing at small gigs & whoever’s house we were hanging out at. Her voice brought me to tears more than a couple of times. I knew she’d go far…I love that she’s getting the respect & admiration she deserves.❤
I feel like im listening to Joan Osborns ''what if God was one of us'' mixed with tracy chapmans ''fast car'' with a total 1930s porch sitting feel.I cant explain it but she is incredible! She is so different. Can we please have more of this!
I love her hair, her music, her voice, her soul

+beenn15 She didn't SAY it was "pretty".. she said she loved it. YOU may only love stuff that's PRETTY, but many of us love stuff that is striking, or unique, or majestic, or outrageous or any number of things that aren't "PRETTY" You know, like loving a rock song or the smell of a campfire.

Ive been enjoying the KZread videos, and purchased her music so I can be supportive, and sing with her and have fun without embarrassing myself or anyone else. ha ha She's awesome. Love her!
The rhythm of her guitar in the fist song is crazy! Awesome!
I love that she doesn’t need anyone to help her perform
If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Did some of you forget this piece of wisdom? She is beautiful, original, and humble. 2 thumbs up for Valerie June.

I've seen mostly positive comments though. Really like her voice, as you said, original. Makes me think of something like Hell or High Water soundtrack. Awesome.
That last song really touched me; got me tearing up like a baby.
This my first time listening valerie june. I have to say at the beginning of the song "Somebody To Love" I got tears in my eyes. Her voice is so so gentle, yet so strong. I love it when someone can touch your ears, brain, heart & soul with their voice. :)
I love Valerie June’s music, and that she’s true to herself. (Just as Shakespeare wrote, “To thine own self be true.”)
I come here when I need inspiration ‼️Thank you Valerie June 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾🦋🦋🦋🦋
I don´t used to comment, but thanks NPR and Valerie June for amazing feelings about time and music.
Still amazes me how rotten people can be on social media. You just have to wonder why a person is compelled to state their negative opinion. You'd think they would just move on if an artist doesn't appeal to their taste. Btw, keep playing your songs in your own special way beautiful lady🌷

THIS IS HOW GOD INTENDED HER TO WRITE HER MUSIC AND SING IT FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF ALL. THOSE COMPLAINING ARE SPOILT BY TOO MUCH COMMERCIAL MUSIC, RECORD SALES AND THE CHARTS.
The great tradition continues: stories about a life sung from the heart. Her first song has the feel and sound of sub Saharan Africa
Reclaiming folk music!
Her voice is so beautiful
i've seen her twice, she's the BOMB!!!! her cds as well as the wandering are worth having....simply supreme!!!
So the 2nd song Rain Dance totally works... I cried, cried, cried sitting in my big city apartment so far from (like Dolly) my Tennessee Mountain home.
I think this is her best recording of Raindance. It has a faster tempo than the other versions I've come accross.
this is the best music i have heard in a while
This wonderful woman's music found itself on UK TV! I was so shocked to hear her but I'm very proud. Her music is amazing and she deserves so much credit.

I enjoyed everything about this lady and performance
She's cool! I love her tone! As a musician/singer, I've been trying to expand my listening library and delve deeper into other styles of music, and I have been scouring KZread to find some new people to listen to, and what are the odds that I run across this?! Lol. Amazing! Thanks NPR Music. :-)
Just saw her live tonight in Austin, TX - amazing! I had no idea who she was before today, but I can truly say she sings from her soul to yours!
We need more of June! Her voice is so.......Beautiful!
The first note of each song, I'm immediately transported to my great grandparent's farm as a child. I love Junie!

this chick is counnntry, at times she sounds like a cartoon character mockn country music..but I couldn't stop listening because she's so unique..she play the hell out that guitar!! But when started playing the banjo, I envisioned her sitting on the porch singing as the sun goes down 😀👏👏👏
She has a Blue Grass kind of voice.

all I want is more more more! I adore Valerie June and love the light she spreads.
I absolutely love her. It took a couple listens to get used to her voice but now i can't stop listening to her. And i get to see her in concert in a month.
