alt-J: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Bob Boilen | April 24, 2017 - As the primary booker of the Tiny Desk Concerts, I have this self-imposed rule: No artist can come back for a second visit unless there's something wholly different about what they're doing. The first time alt-J played the Tiny Desk, in 2012, they came as a four-piece; electric guitar, bass, keyboards and drums. They were a pretty new band, their album had been out a few months and they were playing in clubs for a couple hundred people, not much more.
In the five years since the band visited it has found quite a few new fans. When I heard cuts from the newest album Relaxer a few months ago I flipped and tried to think of a way to bring them back. So I wrote them, saying I'd love to have them again but that it would have to be wholly, out-of-the-box different. I told them I'd hire a brass band, an African kora player if need be, a string section... They took up the challenge. They told me to find a cellist and two violinists.
I wrote to my friend Carol Anne Bosco, a cellist, who turned out to be a huge fan of the band and helped find two violinists for the performance. About four days before the performance the band sent the string parts, written by their friend Will Gardner.
On Monday morning, the English band met the American string players and they all gathered behind my desk. As they worked their way through a first pass at "Three Worn Words," I noticed them and relieved - alt-J had actually never heard the string arrangements, this was the first time. They sounded beautiful. By noon, NPR employees and friends gathered around my desk to witness this astonishing concert from alt-J, including two new songs and two old favorites. Magic.

I started listening to Alt-J again, don't know why ever stopped. When they played Taro a rush of memories came back to me the minute I heard the guitar. What a beautiful song with so many happy beautiful memories attached. Back then, the world for me seemed so much more vibrant and colourful. As I've grown up, the colour drains each year. Listening to this song brings some of the colour back.
Honestly, I've listened to EVERYTHING alt-j has put out, and there hasn't been ONE song that I haven't fallen in love with. 10/10 band, would recommend.

Admittedly, of the dozens of time I’ve visited this incredible little concert, I’ve never taken the time to read through he description. I’m so glad I did. Hidey Arguelles MY REACTION EXACTLY
This intro song...I keep wanting to revisit. It's intoxicating, Relaxer indeed. I love Alt-J. These guys are so good live. The cellist seemed to really dig the mood of the song as it developed too, that is fun to watch, so chill.
This was wonderful to listen through. When they said they were going to play a song from their first album and said "Taro," I couldn't remember which one it was. Then they started playing it and I was immediately whisked back to the Summer of 2013 and filled with a million memories. Losing my job, almost killing myself, calling my ex in tears who came to help me and he hugged and then kissed me and said, "I don't want a relationship," moving into a dirty apartment with a wonderful lady where we never turned on the AC and always had the windows open to the almost dirty kind of downtown area. 85 degrees at home always. Working a bunch of different oddball jobs on campus. Taking calculus based physics. Ex saying he adored me, then saying we have to stop because he's going on a date, coming back and saying he didn't realize how much he cared for me and how wonderful I was. Going over to his place, him hiding me from his roommates at first. Me becoming obsessed with cleaning and plants as a form of control and fostering growth in something else when I couldn't foster it in myself. Getting into yoga, always showing up to class smelling of bleach after scrubbing my bathroom for two hours and with dirt under my fingernails from taking care of my plants. As soon as they started playing Taro when I listened through today, I fell to my knees and started ugly crying. Crazy what music can do to you. Kind of a strange tmi story, but wanted to share it. Now I work a stable corporate job, live in a nice apartment, have a normal boyfriend, live a simple normal life. Interesting to think back on the more strange times and realize, "I lived that."

Saw Alt J in Bristol in about 2013 ish I think. Friend of mine got an EP with Fitzpleasure on, which we wore out. So we booked the gig, about 150 capacity, and then before the date came round they sort of took off and the gig got postponed a few times. Eventually they got to the gig, and it was obviously too small for them but we appreciated they honored it. They turned up, played the album perfectly plus one additional song which was a Kylie Minogue cover I think. Everyone was impressed by the quality, but a huge lack of stage presence, and perhaps appreciation for everyone there who were among the first to support them. Still, amazing creativity, authenticity and quality music.
