Story-time: I work in a little cafe in Budapest, and I was listening to Andrew Bird all day, and then a cute family came in... and they just said me surprised: "AH! That's Andrew Bird!" and I was happy someone else listens to him... but it turned out the father know Andrew, they played together in concert and Andrew was his violin teacher. And the man! Just randomly sent him a video message about the cafe shop and me working and the music!!! AND HE RESPONDED IMMEDIATELY! "Thank you, my friend, to show me! I was thinking about to stop writing music, but now I know there is someone in a little cafe who still plays my music, makes me happy, so maybe I won't stop it today. :)" It was so kind and funny!!!! So thank you NPR and this video to show me his wonderful music years ago!

Honest people who write honest music should never consider stopping. They often achieve that which other artists can only dream about, though the latter may often be in the spotlight of the world while the former are not. However, I listen to music as old as animals, yet when I listen to this I appreciate it and it attracts me, and I ain't no insect attracted to just any light. :) Quality over quantity is what each man or woman should wish for, to strive for. This has actually happened to many artists who have attracted a whole lot of, let's say, teenage fans. They have eventually come to wish for an audience of higher education and refinement, precisely for the difficulty that presents itself in attracting such a fan base, or even just an occasional listener who will choose to nod his head in approval, if only just once. It acts as a measure of the artist's development in various areas of existence, be it the art itself, or the mind behind from which it emanates. By this I wish not to offend those who listen to music where the profound is considered that which is stupid, ostentatious, and lecherous, but it is only fair according to the rule of divine justice to express the thought this way, for he who has refused to move on the staircase of life cannot complain when those who have climbed higher above have no desire to come back down. It is a greater sin to be high up the staircase and become stagnant than to be at the lowest point yet trying to move upwards. That's why there still is a thread that connects those high up there and those who are at the beginning of their journey, the thread of kindness delivered to all those who wish to advance towards knowledge, through reason and love. That is why, in the end, even great scientists such as Carl Sagan or Richard Feynman had given lectures to the general populace, to any mind that had desired to learn and take another step into the unknown and understand it. And in our universe, there is not only one set of stairs, but there are many. Therefore cooperation is imperative, necessitated by the myriad of pathways that the universe abounds in. PS: I am from Slovakia, which is extremely close to Hungary, so he has at least two fans in two small countries of Europe. :) PS2: Thanks for the story, it was interesting and very nice.

I have to agree, and then disagree with you on that one. I agree think there are a few artists just lend themselves to performances better. But to explore their body of work before you inevitably go to their live performance, their studio albums act as a perfect catalyst. I do agree that after listening to the Tiny Desk versions, the albums leave you wanting more, but I think that is part of the draw. The artists that know they shine in live sort of use the studio albums as a trailer for their live performances in my opinion (could be 100% wrong). Also, thank you NPR for bringing these artists into the spotlight that maybe I would've taken a lot longer to stumble upon.

I am finding that with so many good live recordings out there, studio versions are often too clean and over produced. The live performances sound so good because they are organic and in the moment.

seriously it is so hard to find a sound guy that can balance the violin well in a band it is SO FREAKING DIFFICULT. i play violin for non-classical occasions and it's always either too quiet or too loud and too high on the treble man n n n n n this is great. it's got the nice organic sound of an acoustic violin. i'm just rly happy.

I know this is an old comment, but if you're still out there, you should check out Darlingside. They're phenomenal, and when I saw them live, Auyon Mukharji was smokin' on the violin, literally -- he played it so fast I could see smoke rising up from the violin. Punch Brothers are great for that, too! Actually, this reminds me a little of them. If this means anything to you, one of the main guys in it was also in Nickel Creek.

Ardalan - People went ape-shit when Robin Thicke stole from Marvin Gaye, when the Rubinoos sued and won from Avril lavigne, and hundreds of other cases - why does Andrew Bird get a pass? Because Britney Spears isn't popular anymore? It doesn't matter who Bird stole it from - it's still thievery. Hi albums are polished, but I've seen him live several times and it's so amazing! I think he's the type of artist that prefers to do live performances. If you want a real experience, you should check out his performance of "Anonanimal" that Pitchfork posted in 2009. It's e t h e r e a l.

Yes, well said! And it's the story of our lives mate! Everything on NPR is new to me (except say Cranberries, Natalie Merchant, and a few others). The real treats, like Dakha Braka,, Frederic Yonnet, EFI, etc. are totally new to me (and probably many others). I've not heard more than 5 to 10 of my own sounds since I discovered the width of stugg you can listen to on Tiny Desk!

My jaw dropped when reading your comment! I was friends with Ferguson Neville and knew the band Flying Mountain back in the 70's and early 80's. Wow. And went to visit Fergi and stayed with them for a couple weeks. The band played a special event on a boat on Howe Sound for theater performers . You must know StreetHearts too? Babs Chula? Helen Davis? I knew them when they lived in Hawaii and even lived with Helen for a while. Wow. Bird connections!

Andrew Bird has the refined talent and deep emotional involvement that is comparable to Thom Yorke from Radiohead, which is not a statement that I could make about any other musician that I know of. Quite honestly, it's fair to say that Andrew Bird is the more light hearted and optimistic brother, while Thom will always be wavering in his existential dread. Both of these men live in a dream, you can see it in their faces and body movements when they perform. Almost identical, the way Andrew looks in this video playing the violin solos as Thom does with his piano. Truly fascinating, these mirrored reflections from the same image - opposite styles. Yin and yang, why you so crazy?

Press this concert on vinyl - I'll buy twelve! Bird's violon skills are off the wall - everyone else plays awesomelly!!!

I knew Andrew in middle school. He was just beginning to realize his exceptional whistling abilities. He would whistle around campus and impress staff members during break time. Bullies would make comments about his real last name, Bemfartske. "Hey Andy, I can smell the farts before they even come out." Stuff like that. So rude and hurtful. I fully respect his new stage last name, Bird. It fits. Love this guy.

The Bemfartskes are a musical clan.

I wish more musicians would make a break for the door, and escape the traditional studio manufactured recording. I am constantly looking for a simple live, acoustic recording to listen to at home.

Go listen to Anaïs Mitchell then, all of her albums (sans Young Man in America, which is still really good but just doesn't fall into the same vibe) have that unfinished, recorded outside vibe and she's so underappreciated Edit: she also made an appearance on Tiny Desk

A whistling guitar player playing guitar on the violin with a stellar verbal lexicon in the form of folk music and indie rock is pure bliss=]. Hilley Crystal would be proud of the country bluegrass, gourmand, and blues representation=]

Not to worry, they managed to sneak in Pulaski at Day after the cameras cut!

This Tiny Desk is so damn good. Amazing performance, perfect mixing and miking. I play this almost every day.

I love how every instrument / voice here has its very defined place

All that talent and I'm most impressed by the whistling. I can whistle like a bird when I'm alone... If someone looks at me I can't even whistle...

Saw him with Iron & Wine on Sunday. What a show. Two brilliant minds.

Jesus H. Murphy Christ, from the first note to the last I've been pulling my hair out of astonishment watching this band perform. I'm sooo impressed and inspired, I just hope this group reads this and appreciates it.

This performance sounds better than the album. Captivating, honest, substantive. Each track moves with restless purpose like Mr Bird himself.

These are absolutely my 3 favorite tunes now. It's been years since I last had new songs taking over my head like this. Amazing!

Coming back to this video every two or three days. Andrew Bird and the band is bloody brilliant. I can't explain what the feeling is. It's pure, honest, explosive, calming, and puts me in a trance and nostalgia. And that first note of the solo at 3:28 is amazing. Just the look on Andrew's face says it all. A TRUE master of our time. Keep making music and we will listen. Still have yet to see him live! This year is a must!

You can't just not like him, true legend, inspiration to our generation ❤
