Anna Meredith: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
March 2, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- Out of nearly 700 performances at the Tiny Desk, this is simply the most exhilarating one I've experienced. The instrumentation is unusual, with pulsing bass sounds produced by a wonderful combination of cello, tuba and electronics. It's all rhythmically propelled by an astonishing drummer and Meredith pounding a pair of floor toms. And much of the repetitive melody is keyboard-and-guitar-driven that morphs and erupt with earth-shaking fervor.
I first saw this British composer a year ago, in a stunning performance at the SXSW musical festival. It was one of the best concerts of my life. The music I heard sent me into a state of reverie. If music could levitate my body, this is how it would sound. It carried me away and thrilled my soul. I was giddy for days.
Now, I know this isn't music for everyone. Lovers of classical music might shun it for its use of sequencers and electronics. The electronic world may wonder how the hell you could ever dance to this. Or for lovers of rock and hip-hop, its repetition and throbbing beats and bass might send you running and screaming into the distance. But if you know and love the music of Philip Glass, King Crimson or Steve Reich - music that's electrifying, challenging and sonically soars and ripples through your body - then crank this up.
Anna Meredith was a former BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Composer in Residence. The songs performed here come from her 2016 release called Varmints, which is where two of the three songs performed here can be found. It's been a long while since a contemporary composer has captured my musical imagination. I hope and trust this will open many to a new way of thinking about what music is and what it can do.

Have you watched/listened to 5 telegrams? BBC proms. That blew my mind.
I saw a tuba and knew it was going to be good.
Every person in this band looks like they were picked from other bands at random and all decided to play together

Pretty much true, tbf.
I’m here because of The Bluecoats and I do not regret it.
Just got picked up hitchhiking by one of the member's dad. What an absolutely lovely man 👍🏼
It sounds so disjointed until you realize it’s not. Absolutely brilliant. I imagine this is what we hear right when we die and our souls leave our bodies.
now I know what effect I always missed as a guitar player: a tuba player doubling me. Wow!
The counterpoints and synchronous lines require superhuman attention. Maddie and Jack in particular have such difficult lines to play. Superb!
I don’t know what else was going on but that tuba player was dropping black metal vibes out that tuba.
I'm still here listen to this after a cpl of years. Well done and never gets old xx

The crazy top she is wearing and the tuba was all I needed to see to want to watch this.
These songs fill me with a sense of joy and hope. They are a great soundtrack to my leaf raking.
Recently saw Nautilis played by the SF Symphony Orchestra. Absolutely amazing!!!
I have no idea what's happening, but I love it!
The most exciting music of the last 40 years. The virtuosity is immense and the melodies are intricate and huge. The albums are fabulous; the live performances are even better. What a joy!
They all look like they're having so much fun
" But if you know and love the music of Philip Glass, King Crimson or Steve Reich - music that's electrifying, challenging and sonically soars and ripples through your body - then crank this up." Right here, and loving it.
That last song was like Incredible Never heard anything like that ever So so good
Half the time I couldn't tell what time signature they were playing in, but I didn't care. Loved every minute of it.

There’s some odd 15/8 or something in there I think?

From what I could gather the most used time signatures were binary(/quaternary) and ternary with switching/moving accent beats. But I'd have to take notes to be sure

Yessss. I was thinking the exact same thing! Love it.
This is so fresh and exciting, yet with deep sturdy foundations. Brilliant
I was so impressed with the sheer joy Anna seems to have from performing these tracks. Also, of course, impressed with the music and the combination of tuba and cello - I'd just assumed Nautilus was mostly electronic. I will have to watch out for UK concerts so I can see her live !
thank you npr for being amazing
Saw them play this live maybe 2 months before this show was taped. 'Exhilirating' is a gross understatement. One of the best and most musical things i've seen performed.

Varmints is certainly my favorite album of 2016. So glad you were able to get Anna to do a tiny desk! She deserves all the praise she gets
The first Tiny Desk that truly made my PC headphones seem insufficient. Wow.
The description says exactly how I feel! Thank you NPR Tiny Desk!
MORE! I WANT MORE! This was excellent keep it up you guys!!!!
I've been waiting for this for a long time... Stunning...
Love the diversity of NPR and LOVE Anna Meredith!!!!
I love discovering new sounds and approaches to musicality. This was a delight. It was funny how the drummer/percussionist seemed like he was sleeping for the first part of Nautilus and then came awake with a deep, resonating rhythm. Their chemistry is also great. Great stuff! Gotta love Tiny Desk!
This gave me a close encounter. Love it.
I learned of Anna only this week through BBC 6 Music and Sawbones. I have been waiting for music like this all my life. It's like the joy of the complexity of King Crimson but with someone beautiful to look at. I am in love right now.
Pure genius! Thank you for that spectacular perfomance
The instrumentals in these songs were very progressive and reminds me of music created in the seventies. I love it!
Interesting! I certainly love their energy and presence. Looks like grand fun they are having.
Brilliant. Original. Thank you!
~the best fiveandahalf mins I've seen here* Blinding*
WOW! Like a breath of fresh air. Brilliant
Saw them last night at Brudenell. Flippin incredible!
honestly this is the first tiny desk video that I don't vibe with, and I've listened to a large variety for years...didn't think this day would come :( it is what it is. I wish them the best
Wow. That was fantastic!!!
The remix of my car alarm?
Great performance, more like this please.
Haven't heard anything like it before, but I love it! So great
It's insane and I love it!!!
This is BRILLIANT!!!! LOVE IT!
Fantastic! What a finish!
Wow! A genius in action. What a novel band.
Great eclectic mix of styles! Splendid!
I need a new album from her ASAP
Yessssss Anna!!! And approved the amazing video description with the shout out to Philip Glass!
WOW that was amazing!
never hear any contemporay music that hurts, heals my heart! has real integrity.
It's like someone put Philip Glass and DaftPunk into a blender. I'm new to Meredith's compositions but I'm liking what I've heard so far.
I am AMAZED!!!
No puedo describir la cantidad de emociones que me produce The vapours, cuando la escucho prácticamente recuerdo tanto buenos momentos como algunos tristes, en verdad me encanta la canción, muchas gracias.
Fantastic energy!!!....vapours is my top for 2019 and possibly 2020!!
Really awesome to know that she scored Eighth Grade
A brilliant and singularly unique composer.
Brilliant!
This is music!👍👍 I need an album by this band

Amazing!! just became your fan!!
I am truly obsessed.
