​@@_richardleonit's not only about no compression, the phases are impeccable, there's as little effects as possible because the microphone are so well placed. Also he's using mkh series which is usually used for classical records, hence the very natural acoustic sound of tiny desks

@@yippee2000 Haha, my first thought upon reading that too. Reggae Mortis, if you like this style but want to experience it in a less traditional format, have a listen to some math rock. Bands like Toe, Covet, TTNG and Tricot could be right up your alley.

If I was a filmmaker I would call these guys to do my soundtrack and themes for the movie.

I’d never heard of this band. Absolutely beautiful & so pure, felt really moved, so much so that I only got through a third of first tune and immediately ordered their album !!! Hurriedly returned and was enthralled. Felt like I’d been waiting for this all my life ! Thankyou Go Go Penguin and thankyou NPR. From an incredibly grateful 68 year old, Liverpool, NW England ! x

Mercury Music Prize in 2014 with the V2.0 album which I recommend to you guys... Those musicians are not anyone, truly something special about them. You can also buy the last album "A humdrum star" eyes shut, you won't be disappointed ! Absolute quality out there.

Just discovered this group today via KZread music. Had to see them perform. So much going on with just three instruments. Amazing!!

*I like their sound. Dude on the piano got the full effect with the uncovered piano.*

Here I am after a year, after a year when GoGo Penguin were my top artist on Spotify. It all started because of this video. The mixing here is simply incredible, the piano and bass sounds better than on their albums.

I was convinced the pianist used a delay effect, but here Chris is proving me wrong with his phenomenal control over the piano. Infact the whole band has amazing talent - their technique is beyond impeccable and so creative! Much love for this band ❤

I was amazed at how he makes that sound by piano! The secret is the tape. He sticks tape on piano body so that he can make that kind of sound.

I thought the same, too. I had to watch a live performance of “Unspeakable World” to make sure he wasn’t using some sort of effect or backing track. He literally plays three things at once lol

I haven't been this in awe by a band since I first heard Vulfpeck. BLOWN AWAY.

I could tell from the very first piano chord that this was going to be something special.

Love this band, drummer is just sick, what he is doing on Bardo is amazing.

They are only three and the sound is huge ! I love it !

I saw them live in a small town south of spain. Spoke to them and apperently they always travel with their own sound engineer, who works with them in the studio, so that everything sounds as tight as possible. It's like they have a forth member in the shadow, really cool actually

My god the mixing is incredible on this one

I love the “bass and drum” vibe I get from the drums mixed with that beautiful piano playing and the upright holding things together with some cool riffs truly amazing stuff

It's because they're "dance music inspired jazz". They're definitely big fans of drum and bass electronic music and you can easily tell.

They're pretty well-known in the UK jazz scene, but probably not as familiar to American audiences, especially outside jazz listeners. That said, they're still in the early arc of their career, I'm guessing they'll be internationally famous in the next few years.

Serious chops. Beautiful, moving compositions. Not to mention that everyone who had a hand in making that bass sound, from the player, to the engineer, to the mixer could take the rest of their lives off and still have brought more beauty into the world than we have any right to expect from mere humans. Not to forget the craftsmen of those beautiful instruments and preamps and microphones. The sound is from another world!

When people tells me that there's no "Good Music" in this time.. I show them these guys. They are amazing their music is mind blowing, like fresh air!

The best tiny desk, they sound so tight, so rhythmic, the full spectrum of frequencies is use, they are just amazing

I ve seen them live, and listened carefully to their recordings (not in MP3, I have got the true record) and once again, I have to write that NPR tiny desk have THE sound. Great job to all of you, their music deserve it.

Love this line in the description: "the fine details as valuable as the larger shape."

Tiny Desk Concert has exposed me to a bunch of different talented bands and artists that I otherwise wouldn't have heard. I sincerely appreciate NPR for that.

Holy wow, I didn't expect that at all... Not everyday you stumble across something that just takes your breath away, and the next 18min you just stare at the screen in utter joy and bliss... And not everyday or pretty much almost never you go afterwards and buy every album they released. And they are worth every fucking penny...Thank you Tiny Desk to introducing me to such treasures of the music world, I would have missed otherwise completely... Go GoGo Penguin Go :)

If you’re wondering where to go from here, I plead with you, listen to One Percent by them. And that entire album. These guys are geniuses.

Ekow Bartels-Kodwo “One Percent” and “To Drown In You” from their second album V2.0. I like all their albums but, overall, it’s still my favorite. Also, in Deluxe set of the same album, “ In Amber” is amazing.

I've seen them live in Dublin, I've seen them live in Vienna, and I keep wanting more. One of the best bands to see live, you won't regret it. Thank you for the double encore at Porgy and Bess, guys. Haven't danced like that in quite some time.

Ok this might be favorite instrumental tiny desk, which is saying A LOT. I love how dense is is without being loud, and the tone on all the instruments just sounds so good, like, it sounds like there are effects on the piano? How do you even do that live? It has this amazing dreamy tone, and the base is super present without being over powering, and the drummer is also just too dang good. What an awesome band

Howard Spiegel they brought their own with them, but yeah every tiny desk sounds amazing so I’ve no doubt the house engineers are brilliant

Mix is on point ! I love the depth of the double bass here even if I'm a bit disturbed by the few notes which seems to be slightly out of tunes (but nothing related to the mix here). Saw them live 2 times at medium size venues and I'm glad to see them at tiny desk as small venue are by far the best one when it's about jazz ! Thank you for inviting them NPR. Keep it up

This recording is in many ways better than their studio recording of the same tracks. My compliments to the sound engineers responsible.

Keep coming back to this, it's positively blistering. Superb musicianship.....!

Fantastic new find for me! Thanks, as always, to NPR for your sublime gifts. As a huge post-jazz fan, this was just the refreshing new sound I’ve been after lately. Fondly reminds me of some tunes by Cinematic Orchestra and Avishai Cohen. Hoping I get to see you guys giving The Hot At Nights their own spotlight behind the desk one day.

Saw them in Montreal and they are just amazing to see are each are master of their instrument. They are my favourite band now and cannot have enough of the 3 albums. Thank you NPR.

This comment was exactly my thoughts aswell, although I have played this record in my car for more than a year now 😍 But seriously the amount of presicion and velocity control it takes to emulate a delay like he does here, I think is greatly underestimated by a many people hearing it. Astonishing.

The drummer is very very good, and the music great

For me, the best discovery since Red Snapper. Great Talents. The Dynamic is Awesome. Great Sound, well done.

Like listening to a story told without any pause or punctuation. One huge sentence from start to finish.

Still amazed at the mic setups from Tiny Desk.

I discovered them just recently and I can’t stop listening to these great songs and sounds every day and nights. They’re wonderful!

Very true... However, the sound tech applied reverb, eq, leveling, etc. But if you watch the keyboard player's hands you can clearly see that he is doing the repeated chords' sounds himself.

Yeah, you can't see their sound engineer to the left using machines and computers adjusting levels and reverb on the fly. Just saying.

I have loved these classical instruments all my life. but I've never realized they can make these wonderful sounds.

This is very beautiful. 18 minutes pass like seconds and I don‘t want it to stop! Thank you for those beautiful moments
