Tom Misch: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
June 1, 2018 | Bobby Carter -- I learned a few things while watching Tom Misch perform at the Tiny Desk that should've been obvious to a longtime fan like me: He produces beats with a live audience in mind. As much as his drums slap, guitar is the foundation for most of his songs and he showcases a burgeoning talent on the instrument throughout his set.
I first caught wind of this UK wunderkind in 2014. Crafting his own instrumental projects and remixing tracks by artists ranging from Busta Rhymes to Lianne La Havas, Misch steadily garnered a dedicated following on SoundCloud. From there, he collaborated with other London artists and released EPs of original music on the platform. Misch's style doesn't revel in what's going on in pop music today; like a handful of other artists from the UK, his interpretation of hip-hop and R&B is a continuation of what the greats who came before him started. A healthy dose of that inspiration is drawn from the late J. Dilla, while Misch's up-tempo dance numbers align him with the Kaytranadas of the world. In 2016, Misch - still just 21 years old at the time - decided to dabble more in songwriting and explore that soothing timbre of his voice on Reverie, and all of a sudden, his potential rose exponentially.
Misch and the band arrived bright and early to get situated behind the Tiny Desk and rehearse. Misch has said before that he isn't a jazz purist intrinsically, but the way he opens up a guitar solo or jams with saxophonist Braxton Cook, jazz music certainly runs through him.
If you haven't heard of Tom Misch before this performance, now's a good time to catch up. Check out his breakthrough album, Geography, as well as his earlier collaborations, then come back and watch his Tiny Desk again for a true appreciation of his growth as an artist.

I discovered this video (and Tom Misch as an artist) in July 2020. I was going through the worst time of my life. Recent death(s) in my family, a break up from a 4+ year relationship, and plus the hardship of the pandemic. I remember I cried for like 2 hours straight after hearing the lyrics and the solo in “I Wish”. I just revisited this video after being in a better place mentally and emotionally. This version of movie is just incredible. That first lick on the guitar always gives me goosebumps. I know it’s a cliche but it genuinely does. So good

I am always taken with how well-mic’d they are, and how well the true sound is presented to us, by the producers at Tiny Desk.
Just goes to prove: Don't judge a book by it's cover. These guys look like a pick up team for flag football. Wasn't expecting this exquisite sound.

His beats take me on an imaginary vacation on the Caribbean beach. Love it.
Ive lost track of how many times I watched this. This video introduced me to Tom Misch years agor and Im so much delighted by his art. Went to his concert in Brazil and the energy was so moving, the best concert ive ever been to tbh. last but not least: LOVE HIS OUTFIT CHOICE FOR THIS

Still lovin' this music today!!!
Never been able to explain it, but Tom Misch music just speaks to my soul! Love every song he has released, been a fan since the 1st song upload, I saw he was performing and I went to see him at XOYO 2015/16 as a young adult. I did not have such passion for any other musician, not one that can make me feel so much emotion, I thought those days had left me, then Tom came along!
His voice/ music just put you in a good mood
Haven't seen many comments for the drummer but MAN he is in the pocket all the time. Never stepping over his boundaries. I love the amount of control he has over and yet adds so much feeling and texture to the songs..awesome drumming!!! I could learn a lot.

Not like i'm a person who understands anything of sound recording magic, but they seem to be at a kinda small place, which I'm pretty sure helps (I collected a few videos you can see the room: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gGWrj8p9ma2alLA.html at the 23m30s mark kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3-u0cSNc6y4dNo.html at the 23m mark kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3-u0cSNc6y4dNo.html at the 4m45s mark Though, the last one looks VERY different and empty, terrible for audio recording)
@sabus4312

I'm not a sound engineer yet (learning) but pretty sure since the instruments are connected to a audio interface there isn't any white noise affecting much. i think the panning also plays a part. the drums is usually placed in the back middle of the audio, and lead guitar furthest up front, rhythm guitar right or left slightly behind middle in terms of sound direction if you get what i mean. making it have that stereo sound?. i hope what im saying makes sense cause i can't really explain without drawing the picture
ayo why is noone talkin about the dude in the back that plays saxophone, guitar, and violin, he deserves more credits
They sound soo smooth! I want to see them live
tommmm your vocals fill hearts my dude. thank you for creating
