Edmar Castaneda: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Edmar Castaneda is the sort of musician who isn't afraid to challenge the established order. He's carving out a place for himself in Latin jazz on an instrument you don't often hear in his chosen genre: the Colombian harp. He's adapted intricate traditional fingerpicking techniques to play jazz melodies along with the Afro-Cuban tumbao (bass line). As you can see and hear for yourself in this Tiny Desk Concert, he can switch between rural Colombian dance music and jazz with a twist of his wrist. Literally.
His musical vision is so invigorating that he's gaining fans like NEA Jazz Master Paquito D'Rivera, with whom Castaneda has performed. His Web site shows him constantly on the road as a guest artist with other forward thinkers, or with his latest touring trio, which consists of Castaneda, a drummer and a trombonist.
Castaneda recently parked himself behind Bob Boilen's desk and crafted a transporting mix of tradition and improvisation. Chances are, you've never heard anything like it.

Oh wow...WOW! I’m a harpist, playing for many years, and this young man is a genius, something out of this world, how he adds so many new and different sounds to the harp with such mastery and passion. There is no match. I’m in awe. I hope the world in its entirety hears this young man play. And that smile of his and humility is priceless :)

I was wondering if all of that is just normal techniques for harpist, but i guess not entirely. He is amazing. I discovered him because he has a live album with Hiromi, you should listen to it if you havent. Beautiful.

The Latin American technique is an entirely different branch of harp playing, you can see they use their nails and plays standing with a thinner harp.

I saw him perform 3 years ago live in Atlanta and I literally cried the whole show. His music touched my heart so much, it was crazy. Hiromi was playing piano as well and I'm a huge fan of hers too. I listen to their album often when I'm driving and it always brings a lovely tear to my eyes.

I was 12 years old the first time I listened to this concert. I'm 21 now, and I find myself coming back periodically both for the nostalgic effect I get from his melodies and unceasing amazement of his mastery.

Sadly the masses like good looks, fluff and canned music. Not actual talent.
This guy works so hard and obviously loves what he's doing. This is fantastic music from an incredible musician.
I'm Colombian, I love harp from joropo and today I wrote "colombian harp" in the search of some classics. I am now at the edge of absolute happiness. Gracias desde el fondo de mi corazón, gracias por tomar de tu tiempo para endulzar nuestros días!
His skill at the harp is unbelievable. That was the coolest tiny desk I've ever seen
Holy f&@k! Insane genius. Latin American harpists have blown my mind for decades: Mexico, Columbia, Paraguay… this guy is right up there with the very best of them. Virtuosic as any guitarist or pianist virtuoso. What human fingers can do!!!
This clip has a couple of years and he's still magnanimus (standing speechless, in absense of a greater adjective). We just had him opening our yearly Mastercard Jazz Fest in Puerto Rico 2023 (reopening after Covid times), and I'm literally holding my urge to cry because I couldn't assist to go watch him. Truly a genius. You don't have to be hispanic, or colombian or even a passionate music fan to just stand in awe with Edmar. But for us who have our roots in Latinamerica, can't help but loose all sense of gravity when we listen to him and swell with pride at what he's achieved with his music and the harp. Truly remarkable.
Orgullo Colombiano!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I watch this several times a day to remind me that there is still beautiful people out there.
This is the best video I have ever seen. I almost didn't watch it because, well, it's the harp. My error in judgment was clear after five seconds.
Absolutely incredible. Perfect technique, and execution, and unrivaled in originality to top it all off. Where's the "love" button?
Total command of the light tension South American harp. Those blues notes take the lever harp to a new level. No limits. But beyond the technique, he is channeling the kind of creative power that reminds me of my first listen to John Coltrane back in the late 60s.
i cried listening to this. its freaking amaging !!

This dude is to the harp what Bela is to the banjo. A virtuoso. One of the best, solo jazz performances I've personally ever heard. Brilliant. The man "has his way" with the music, he dominates it - as huge as it is. Bravo!

Holy criminy! And all on a diatonic harp! Magnificent!
Excuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor. Mind. Blown.
Meanwhile, in 2019, Edmar Castaneda -- referred by some as "the Pat Metheny of the Harp" is performing and recording with former Pat Metheny Group member Gregoire Maret on Harmonica. I'm excited to see them perform together at the GroundUP Music Festival 2020 :-)
🎶💜 13:22 … mind blown 🤯… I felt that! This was so inspiring to witness. What a phenomenally gifted soul. Perfect example of the many ‘voices’ of an instrument and the variety of flavors a musician can create from it. Simply divine 🎶💜
I'm watching this 7 years later and I'm still crying by minute 3...
Me llego hasta el fondo de mi alma , de mis raizes y sangre. Saludos desde Chile!
