DakhaBrakha: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

People always ask me, "What's your favorite Tiny Desk Concert?" Well, right now it's the one recently performed by DakhaBrakha. The creative quartet from Kiev, Ukraine make music that sounds like nothing I've ever heard, with strands of everything I've ever heard. There are rhythms that sound West African and drone that feels as if it could have emanated from India or Australia. At times, DakhaBrakha is simply a rock band whose crazy homeland harmonies are filled with joy. All the while, they play tight-knit tunes featuring accordion, drums, reeds and shakers while wearing tall, Marge Simpson-looking wool hats that made me jealous.
I want the world to see this Tiny Desk Concert more than any other right now. It's refreshing to hear the power of acoustic music and the many worlds of sound still waiting to be explored. -- BOB BOILEN

What the--? It's rock, it's New Age, it's Tibetan drone, it's African call and response, it's Slavic folk, it's so old and so new and it makes me want to headbang and hippie groove and do the cossack dance at the same time! I am joyful right now because of this joyful, utterly unique music!!!

@@ahnenthor Well the way it was said maybe was bit off, but it's true, the vast majority of what they do is Ukrainian folk. They have a few songs that have modern influences, but those are obvious. It doesn't have to be Tibetan just because it has drone tones, a ton of folkmusic has drone tones, it also doesn't have to be African just because it has call and response, also quite common in folkmusic.

Wow. Just wow. There is an invisible barrier between certain kinds of music and people like me. This kind of music, for example. People like me are the kind who love music but who feel a terrible embarrassment at the idea of being one of these musicians and - for want of a better expression - doing the shouting/wooping/screaching parts. It is precisely this kind of music, however, that brings out of me the kind of feeling that makes people do those things in the song. That unashamed expression of feeling/passion/happiness(or indeed sadness) which is so important a part of the music, but which would be terribly embarrassing for me to do... that's... what... 'power', 'freedom' or something like it. Perhaps that's too deep a way to thinkg about it. Anyway, thank you so very much for what I wil call the most enjoyable almost-random-click of the second half of 2019.
