Helado Negro: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Helado Negro | June 30, 2017 - The artist Helado Negro (Roberto Lange) made a very big impression on me when I first experienced him almost eight years ago. It was a sound I had never quite heard, and I was immediately drawn in; there were layers of synths, percussion that percolated rather than pulsed, vocals that epitomized the world ethereal and lyrics in Spanish and English that floated amidst the music like wisps of smoke.
I caught his live show in Mexico City and in Austin, Texas and each time the spectacle of theater and elaborate presentation were just as important as the music (including two dancers covered in what can best be described as Christmas tree tinsel).
But that's not what you're getting here - instead of tinsel, we get Roberto standing behind Bob Boilen's desk in a t-shirt that says "Young, Latin and Proud," the title of his most recent single. That's the essence of the songs he chose to play (and really, his entire catalog), music about being a young American with Ecuadorian parents, singing about life in here in the U.S.
Our little concert here also shows off an acoustic treatment of Helado Negro's vision, and it's just as compelling without the electronics. In fact, it's as if the songs reveal a different aspect of themselves, the lyrics intimate and laid bare. Personally, I loved the sound of the alto and tenor saxophones playing harmonies in place of a bank of keyboards. As you'll see, the entire band perfected that delicate balance of intensity and low volume, letting the music and ideas breathe.
This performance was a long time in the making, but the payoff is clear, presenting an artist in full command of his craft.

absolutely underrated performance. hes so good!!!!!! and only getting better!!! we need a new tiny desk from helado for his new album :)
Saw this guy open for Sylvan Esso. The audience just didn't get him at all and I could see his frustration. Got a chance to talk to him at his merch table. Told him he reminded me of Beefheart in the way he takes artistic chances with his style and raw lyrics. He lit up like it made his night.

i was in a show when he was touring with them too, and witnessed the same, it was super rude, the audience talked during his entire set. i was so upset i left in the middle of Sylvan Esso (i had paid to see him anyway), wish i'd stayed knowing he'd be at his own merch table!! but glad you said that to him, wondering if it was the same show....

Sounds like a ripped version of Devandra
one of the voices that put me into a state between laughing and crying. Irresistible
Crooning like a bird on a branch. His solo performances with electronics instead of a band are delicious aural treats as well. Esp. the one with the people covered in tinsel slowly moving in the background. WOnderful sounds and passion.

He opened for a Sylvan Esso at a show I went to in 2017. He was amazing, but it seemed like everyone in the audience was so confused like they didn't know what they had signed up for lol.
Helado Negro's music blows me backwards, I can sit for hours and listen. Thank you - Love from Denmark

They aren’t a band tho
It's cool to see him with a band behind him. I've only ever known him to have all this sequencing and synth stuff which in itself is an impressive operation, but this is such a different and interesting flavour of his that didn't expect actually. I would happily love to see him do a stripped down acoustic tour just like this.

I saw him in November and he had a lovely band. It was amazing. Literally never felt more like a fangirl for ANYONE
Saw him open up for Sylvan Esso and it was awesome. Was not expecting it honestly.
Firts 5 seconds and I'm already loving them
Dang, this dude is incredible.
Saw these guys when they were headlining for Cuco a few weeks ago and the singer serenaded me when I was about to cry because my feet were killing me. I literally had to crouch down because my ankles were burning from standing for 3 hours. Had no idea who they were but their music was super soothing, glad I got to see them perform live. 💜
I love the feel of this band so muccchh. Also the main singers hair is just so on point.
i've seen roberto perform 3 times now and he's such a lovely guy who creates such a beautiful and loving atmosphere with his music and in-between songs talks. he's really what it means to be an artist and to touch people...crying rn watching this tinydesk
I'm so in love with this tiny desk concert.
Saw him on his own at the Visions festival in Hackney last night. Hypnotic is the word.

I agree, would be better if he used the did it more sparingly, though. Many music snobs will shit on him for using it at all. I try and forget about whats considered "correct" and listen to the sound that the artist makes as a whole. This performance reminds me a little bit of Ian And Sylvia's version of Tears of Rage.
