Bob Boilen | April 7, 2017 - Last May, Tash Sultana posted a self-made video, just her in her living room with guitar, laptop and a great song called "Jungle." Within five days it had drawn a million views.
This 21-year-old Maltese-Australian got a guitar from her grandfather when she was three, she says, and has played it every day since. It's astonishing to watch Sultana's fluidity on her instrument, like a natural extension of her body. (She also plays bass, saxophone, trumpet, flute and more, but kept it "simple" at the Tiny Desk.) I thought I had a lot of energy - watching her bounce from guitar to drum machine to two separate microphones - and then hopping barefoot from looping pedal to effect pedal as she builds her songs was exhilarating and exhausting. There's more here than an exercise in virtuosity, her music is filled with adventure and ambition. These songs are rapturous and resonant.
Tash has just finished a month-long, sold-out U.S. tour.
The EP Notion is available now.

To watch you perform, to see your unadulterated pure joy, it must be what heaven is like. Thank you for opening a small window into your world. Please don’t change.

I can’t lie, despite “the best” being entirely subjective, I will say this is my personal favourite Tiny Desk ever; even to this day after 5 years. This introduction to Tash changed my life so many years ago, and after experiencing them three times in three different countries, I can’t deny, they are the best live act I have ever seen. They have done so much for me which they will never know but I felt compelled to put it into words and share it in the hopes there may be others who feel similar. We are utterly blessed to have lived in the same time as Tash Sultana. As they have said; “If I'm in a good headspace, then it doesn't matter which direction things go.”

I just saw them live in Hollywood for the first time. It was amazing. Hands down the best musical, possibly the best experience I ever had in my entire life. Tash Sultana came out and I immediately started to cry. And I was like what’s up with that? And then I just cried the entire time. It was like I cried for every time I couldn’t and for every time I couldn’t feel or wouldn’t let myself.

She used to play on the streets of Melbourne a few years ago when only a handful of people knew about her. The first time i have heard her play "Notion" and i literally saw crowds of people getting around and staring in silence, crossing the streets and getting off trams to stop and listen. People looking at each other in disbelief. i got to work late to stop and listen. I can only describe the experience of stumbling across such an amazing experience as meeting God's particles floating through space. Unreal

I saw someone’s comment below about how her expression makes them uncomfortable but they recognise that it’s probably because it is what most of us never allow ourselves to do. Probably they just get the master recording from the mics/amps running through a computer before being. All electric instruments have input > output w/ simultaneous ability to capture. Each instrument is captured seperately and I'm sure someone in production gets the levels of everything right or just the same as they use at the location. Applause is probably just picked up from mic. Thats my guess Anyway. It's either that or those big mic drop down things you see on movie sets.

Notion: by Tash Sultana I hear the birds When they're singing I hear the sirens when they're ringing But I can't take my mind off of you A thousand words, pouring out The distance of over there Is moving on and out You said it, you said it'd be alright How 'bout these notions Hmm, they're deep as ocean Calling out my name Screaming out in vain Singing hallelujah Tell your mother, she don't understand Tell your father, he's not listening Why don't you tear my heart The chain is made of string I roll the dice You seal the deal That don't matter 'Cause this pain will heal I will follow you Into the dark How 'bout these notions Hmm, they're deep as ocean Calling out my name Screaming out in vain Singing hallelujah These notions Hmm, they're deep as ocean Calling out my name Screaming out in vain Singing hallelujah Singing hallelujah to you Calling out my name I'm in the deep end, ocean Calling out my name Singing hallelujah to you

Her constant smile, her movements that vibrate happiness, her shimmering face from the drops of sweat, it's amazing how much she enjoys what she is doing! And the way she communicates that is even more amazing. Thank you for making my sad day a bit more "noisy", a bit more different than the rest of the days, thank you.

Nice to see modern guitarists having that much fun with their pedalboard. Holy shit she's all over the place, I love it. You can watch her make all these little adjustments with her knobs and her feet constantly kicking on and off effects, she's obsessed with her tone. Best click I've made all month!

Absolutely. Everything is sound. Energy and frequencies make up everything in the universe. Everything vibrates with harmonic frequencies. In the beginning was sound. The word, the big bang, the ohm or whatever you want to call it was a sound. Our voices are some of the most powerful and dynamic sound machines known. Most just don't know how to connect to it. She's apparently very much tuned in.
