Joan Shelley: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
As technology rules the sound of the day, it's good to be reminded how powerfully a single voice can transmit deep emotion. Joan Shelley made one of the most beautiful records of the year with just her voice and two guitars. Over and Even has roots in British folk, the sort made popular by artists like Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention in the late '60s and early '70s - another time when the dominant music was filled with electricity and texture. The intertwined melodies Shelley and her guitar partner Nathan Salsburg (who's had his own Tiny Desk Concert) produce are refreshing breaths of Kentucky air in a world of compressed drums and overly processed vocals. This one is near and dear to my heart.

No words could ever describe my love for Joan Shelley. I cannot explain it, but her music soothes my soul in a way that nothing else can, and it has for a long time. This is and always will be my favorite Tiny Desk, and that's really saying something; I've seen them all. I'm so grateful every day to have discovered her music.

Agreed 100%. She is the best. Try out Monica Heldal if you aren’t already aware of her. Joan and Monica are my muses.

I've only just discovered Joan, but her music fills every cell of my body with wonder, joy and love. A rare and beautiful talent indeed.
Very beautiful, pure stuff; it's good to know that people are still doing it in this unadorned, honest manner and finding an appreciative audience.
If Joan sings to me, I'll do nothing but cry listening to her.. Such an angelic voice.. She's even better than the studio recordings..
Not sure why I think this, but her voice has such a motherly quality to it. Really soothing.

Joan really has a great tenor and depth to her voice! I agree it is soothing and gives a sense of permanence and stability. She is a delightful vocalist!
I found Joan Shelley when I watched the movie Colewell. There I heard the song It's Not Over By Half. I spent my early life on a mountain in Pennsylvania in a house with no indoor plumbing and electricity in two rooms. I haven't heard that expression or that music in over 60 years. I got memories that I never knew were in me. WOW!!!!!!
A unique and uncomparable voice, pure and beautiful, a vocal, musical and poetical spirit of her own origin. And a lovely beaming smile.
She's too good, fantastic voice, gorgeous melodies and touching lyrics. Perfect
always happy to see Nathan Salsburg on Tiny Desk! nice performance overall
This is a beautiful song - so well played and sung - no vocal gymnastics - just an easy soothing voice and beautiful guitar work!
And what I really like is that her record sound exactly like this concert. Sometimes I fall in love with the concert here and then completely dislike the studio albums. This is so beautiful, gotta say it again.
thank you NPR for these golden opportunities you have given musicians to share their voices and for the listeners to simply - listen. until we meet!
🍂🍃November 2022🍂🍃 I've just discovered this amazing artist thanks to the UNCUT magazine. On their list of top 75 albums of the year, Joan's album "The Spur" is in the second place! Congratulations! 🌻🌻🌻
So lovely
Joan Shelley's music is timeless--I keep coming back to this concert over and over to enjoy her expressive voice, artful lyrics, and the wonderful totality of her music. Hats off to her collaborator, Nathan Salsburg, as well. I suspect I will keep returning to this music for decades to come.
The voice one would expect to hear while journeying back home to heaven...
I discovered her music due to a recent online concert at Duke Performances. Now I listen to this concert every week. I really enjoy her company. It brings me good memories of my time in the US. Thks a lot to Tiny Desk Concerts. Your concerts are great!
Never heard her before, wow. What a voice.

I saw you and Nathan both in Philly last year and the performance still stays with me.
Beautiful song. Reminded me of Kate Wolf immediately.
So pure and so haunting... her voice goes straight to the soul. And these soothing harmonies...
Her voice is like buttah! This is porch swings and perfect weather and being surrounded by all the people you love best. Ahhhh, wonderful.
Congrats to Joan and Nathan on their new baby girl.

Beautiful sound. Thanks.
"As technology rules the sound of the day, it's good to be reminded how powerfully a single voice can transmit deep emotion." Well said, well said. Precisely why my family and I have dived deep into acoustic music (including classical) in recent years, from Iris Dement to Joshua Bell and back and forth. Excited to add Joan Shelley into the mix.
This is beautiful. Thanks NPR.

Great singing.....period. Wow, new fan right here.
I saw her open for Wilco last night, she was great.
Should be an absolute international success story but it will be. Time is an amazing filter.
Just saw them perform in Seattle. Their new album, “Joan Shelley” is wonderful. Produced by Jeff Tweedy. He and son, Spencer, also perform on the album.

There are so many great npr tiny desk videos. I truly think this is my favorite. To my untrained ears it sounds a bit Tracy Chapman. And I mean this in the best way there can be.

The guitar playing reminds me of Jim Croce. Because his 2nd guitar player complimented him so well and these two do that.
the sound , the voice touching my heart, moving me to tears - I don't know why, it just does. Loving this song so much, want to crawl into to headphones, nesting there and feel that's the place to recharge energy Are you both ever coming to canada , Vancouver island? Ill be there with all my friends. I would love to know more about the first song... what is almost over? Her voice reminds me of Kate Wolf ... how I miss Kate.
Great writer, lyrics, and voice. Justified comparison to the late Kate Wolf
Good folk music cuts through all the fakery that pervades pop music and says something real about life. It does so in a way that makes an instant connection in a warm familiar way. Most pop bands in the lyric department either go with the good old "rhyming couplet" "Oh lady..the memory of your hair like grass...so bladey" or more "artsy" "the wolf cries, the man sighs,in death's unreason, the dwarf vomits treason! Yeah! Power chord me! Or they dispense with anything even vaguely hinting at a coherent thought or honest emotion and form "Yes". (whom I admit, still can't help liking in all their stilted glory!)

In defense of bands whose lyrics are really opaque, like Yes, one nice thing about them is that you're free to figure out what they mean to you - to make the symbolism your own - and end up having a really personal experience with the music. I love pop for the fun of it (and also sometimes for the great and thoughtful lyrics of an XTC or Crowded House). I love progressive and art rock for the sheer creativity and virtuosity. I love folk for its directness, purity, and emotion.

Chip Matthews Excellent observations Chip and XTC and Crowded House are both great bands. You're right - different musical styles all have their own unique appeal and the kinds of lyrics associated with them inspire us for different reasons. The lyrical "opacity" of a band like Yes as you mentioned invites us to arrive at our own conclusions as to what the songs are all about thus offering a measure of aesthetic satisfaction and freedom. In fact thinking about the music of Yes I'm reminded of how a random confluence of words and sounds could invoke an image, color or even an emotion...All of this being the case, now that I'm in my late 50s I have found myself getting a heightened kind of satisfaction in hearing songs that talk about life in an honest way that reflects the experiences of someone who has been around for awhile and has made some discoveries about the world that they now feel compelled to transmit in a direct and pure way (to borrow from your closing thoughts) free from the kind of symbolism and ornamentation that characterizes the lyrical content that informs pop and rock music

definitely Crowded House
I was discussing my views on Taylor Swift with a friend. (For the record, my views on TS are: meh. I don't think she's interesting enough to even be bad.) My friend asked if I could name a better singer. I said, "A couple of dozen." She asked for an example, so I played this video. She said, "OK, she's way better."
she's very tall
"Homie don't play that"
AutoTune would make this so much better (...kidding)
Voice Incredible ! . . Lyrics a little weak . . Will see at Hardly Strictly 2019 : >)
she looks like shailene woodley 😂
I love white culture
Downvoting this is the same as downvoting yourself because you're a poor excuse for a human being.
Why doesn't NPR mention the name of the male guitar player? Truly amazing!!! Typical feminist NPR move.
