Katie Pruitt: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Музыка
The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Ann Powers | October 26, 2020
Katie Pruitt's voice is like a kite soaring through the sky of her songs. Just listen to how it catches the wind in the song that opens her Tiny Desk (home) concert, the title track from her captivating debut, Expectations. "Sometimes I can't get outta my own head," Pruitt begins in a wry monotone that embodies the low mood she's describing. But phrase by phrase, Pruitt builds self-confidence until, by the end, she's fully aloft. Pruitt rides the high of her own chorus without histrionics. Here's an exceptional musician and songwriter who never feels the need to show off.
Throughout this three-song set, recorded in the plant-strewn corner of Nashville's Minutia studio where Expectations was tracked, Pruitt and her two bandmates maintain this tone of steady excellence. She's playing with local treasures Zachariah Witcher on bass and Ross McReynolds on drums, and the trio locks in from the first note, building a cool rock groove as Pruitt unspools her stories. "It's been a hard year," she says. "But one thing about painful experiences is that ... it forces you to grow." Expectations offers myriad scenes of such transformation, documenting Pruitt's journey from a Southern Catholic childhood to adulthood as an out lesbian who, as she sings in "Loving Her," is "staying true to who I am." That song and the heartbreak waltz "Out of the Blue," which completes this set, demonstrate Pruitt's gift: making her particular experiences universally relatable. Like her ace guitar work and that muscular yet weightless voice, these songs inspire with their easy largesse. "Love each other, love yourself, wear a mask!" Pruitt says by way of goodbye, her smile saying, I know you can.

Katie stayed in my AirBnb room several years ago when she performed in Elkin, NC. I went to her show and was floored by her passion. We sat on the screened porch and talked for hours afterward. She is the real deal and I wish her all the success she desires. Thanks for a great evening Katie! Trish in Lowgap, NC

I first heard "Loving Her" from her OurVinyl Sessions a few years ago, and let me tell you... the memory of the first time I heard it is still ingrained in my head. I probably listened to it on a loop for over an hour straight. It still hits me the same to this day.

my reaction exactly. at least the equal of kacey/miranda/isbell
Katie is the real deal. Knowing her whole family, I've watched Katie's talent grow and refine. She's an incredible singer, songwriter, and guitarist. Her sense of melody in chordings and solos is beyond her years. Her ability to write haunting lyrics and refrains is from that of a soul of thousands of years old. Keep it up Katie!
The Stevie Nicks groove is as much in her voice as it is in that steady driving bass... not to mention the smoky tone of that Jazzmaster... it's all excellent!!

Definitely a Fleetwood Mac vibe on that first song!
I love this. I'm a 61 year old straight guy.. I've just bought your album. I'm a massive Caitlyn Smith fan, and I get the same vibes from you. You are so real, don't change. Best wishes, sending love from Wales UK.
I first heard Katie a few months ago and became an instant fan. She's the full package: great musician, lyricist, vocalist. Her album, Expectations, is a no-skip for me.
There were some spicy passing chords in the third verse of this version. I love that Katie doesn't just write a song and say it's done forever. Little tweaks can be heard in all of her sets. Amazing musician.
Beautiful! I'm glad NPR keeps introducing me to new artists i would never find on my own

@@Hobbylos23 I'm with ya! I always use these types of sessions as what a band is actually like. Albums are just a hopeful version with many chefs in the kitchen, haha
She's so good. Out of the Blue is a ridiculously beautiful and sad song.
I've been looping this video for a couple weeks now. Some vocals just reach so deep. It feels like being wildly in love. Your talent is such a great gift! Your the trifecta with those turn you inside out vocals, your songwriting and then the guitar! I hope everyday of your life brings you love and gratitude and feelings of connection like your gift brings to me, to so many! Thank you! Kat
She's said the overall feel of the song while she was writing was inspired by an artist I can't remember, but it's fairly obvious that John Mayer was a huge influence on it. I love this, she's incredibly talented!

Found her songs a few months back and got hooked instantly. Glad that she had the opportunity to perform here!
Life got in the way of my keeping up with music for the longest time, but these concerts have been such a blessing. Katie Pruitt is great. Thank you, NPR Music, for the introduction and for all the introductions through the years.
What a voice.. not my normal type of music but im sticking this one out 😌
Incredibly nice vocals. The whole band is so enjoyable to listen to. Can't remember a band in the last couple of years I have been so amazed by.
A Singer's voice hasn't made my hair stand up like this since Eva Cassidy. This young Lady will be MASSIVE.
I saw Katie at SXSW in 2019 when my band played there. Needless to say, I was stunned by her performance. I've been listening ever since!
Personally, I just can’t wait to she puts out more music. One of my new faves. In a different venue I really enjoyed AJ Lee a Bluegrass gal.
Love love love Katie Pruitt! Keep bein’ you! Real and honest’
Out of the blue - you pierced me right then and there, memories and the whole show rolled again the curtains opened and the actors played the little game... one year it has been and still out of the blue that feminine ghost hunts my space.. Beautiful song
Never, NEVER, have i clicked faster. Katie you’re phenomenal, looking forward to the next album with great anticipation.
idk who she is But I'm glad i found her work ❤️
I love her guitar sound. Her Vocals almost reminds me of Stevie Nicks. The bassist is dropping some sick bass lines. The drummer is doing his thing keeping the beat. Love it.

Holy pipes batman! She can sing!
Something fresh with her kind of music. Thank you NPR.
Thanks npr for introducing me to amazing bands through out the pandemic
Recently turned onto her and the band. I have been completely obsessed, in healthy way, lol. I think this band has been unfortunately overlooked, the second she started to sing I was hooked. I miss live music and hope when it does happen she hits the east coast so we can show her some love. Thank you Katie :)
I can't tell you how many times I have listened to the first song, over and over!
I’ve watched a lot of her live performances, but this was the best one of “out of the blue” i’ve heard

Amazing. Out of the Blue is stuck after hearing in a playlist, but not surprised it caught NPR’s ear for talent.
I really enjoyed this fresh, smooth, piercing voice. Soul soothing.
What a talent. Katie was up there in my favorites immediately after hearing 2 songs. Such timeless style with bags of originality and attitude. Great
Out of the blue You must've come out of the blue No other color would do We watched the clouds move all around Uncovering feelings unfound And I can't imagine when I can't imagine why I'd ever wanna leave you dear If we stay right here we wouldn't have to worry about anything But the morning came and stole it Out of the blue Your eyes are full of yellows and greens They turn into water and fall from your cheeks Now we're going deep into the dark And it's hard to tell where we are And I can't imagine when I can't imagine why I'd ever wanna leave you dear If we stay right here we wouldn't have to worry about anything But the moment fades and so do you Out of the blue Ooh what a lovely day for loving you Ooh what a lovely day for loving you The sunset it bled orange and red In a perfect explosion behind your head While we're looking up somehow we forget That even the best days will end Now I can't remember when I can't remember why you packed your bags and left me here It's been a whole year since we said we'd never find somebody new Now I hardly ever talk to you But today I stopped and thought of you Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue Out of the blue
She is very talented. Thanks for letting me find her ! Great vocals.
Can't get enough of this girl! Love the writing and voice. I'm glad you are here, KP. Wish your music was here to help me feel ok 30 years ago when I was coming out. Thanks for sharing your gifts and not being ashamed to write a song that said her name ✌💜
