Aug. 16, 2019 | Tom Huizenga -- It's not every day someone walks into our NPR Music offices and unpacks an instrument made in 1680. And yet Kian Soltani, the 27-year-old cellist who plays with the authority and poetry of someone twice his age, isn't exactly fazed by his rare Giovanni Grancino cello, which produces large, luminous tones. (He also plays a Stradivarius.)
And if you think the notion of a cello recital isn't exactly sexy or thrilling, just take a look at Soltani; he radiates joy and ingenuity as he performs three pieces that offer virtuosity, sweet lyricism and fire.
The Hungarian Rhapsody, by the late 19th century cellist and composer David Popper, traces its inspiration to similarly titled pieces by Franz Liszt and Johannes Brahms, but showcases a number of hot-dogging tricks for the cello, including stratospheric high notes, flamboyant slides and a specific high-velocity bouncing of the bow called sautillé. Soltani nails all of them with nonchalant elegance, backed with companionable accompaniment by pianist Christopher Schmitt.
To prove he can make his instrument truly sing, Soltani worked up his own arrangement of "Nacht und Träume" (Night and Dreams) by Franz Schubert, replacing the human voice with his cello's warm, intimate vocalizing. And in the Persian Fire Dance, Soltani's own composition, flavors from his Iranian roots - drones and spiky dance rhythms - commingle with percussive ornaments.
It all adds up to well-rounded, technically astute playing from a young cellist whose career is ascending in full flight.
SET LIST
Popper: Hungarian Rhapsody
Schubert (arr. Soltani): "Nacht und Träume"
Soltani: Persian Fire Dance

I love Tiny Desk because I would never seek this type of music out but I am thoroughly enjoying it

@Joe Thunder It needn't be spendy. Do you like tacos? Beer? So do a lot of cellists and pianists, and it only takes a few of them for something like this -- unlike a full orchestra.

Such a great way to say it
00:00 Hungarian Rhapsody David Popper (1843-1913) 07:56 Nacht und Träume Franz Schubert (1797-1828) 12:52 Persian Fire Dance Kian Soltani (1992- )
I saw this man live at the Cello Biennale in Amsterdam last year. He is absolutely fantastic, so glad this recording exists. Thanks NPR!
Amazing. Kian is sweating...proof of his passion and excellence. Kudos to the pianist who turned his own page during a very fast passage of Popper. Kian's bow hand is to die for.
This was all fantastic, but the "Soltani:Fire Dance" was amazing from beginning to end.
The Hungarian Rhapsody was bloody impressive, but the Schubert... Wow, just wow. How does a cello sing so beautifully? The intonation, the color, the phrasing, absolutely beautiful!
Kian Soltani is playing direct to the listeners " heart and soul " ! He is also so authentic in the way he performs , NO " "show off " on stage simply he is a true musician , he does not need to act !
Ear buds in, eyes closed, dark room, volume adjusted to just enough. Taking quite a musical voyage. Thank you.
OMG! This took me from my childhood of watching the coyote chasing the roadrunner to very soothing to Celtic/Egyptian. I couldn't believe the oneness the musician had with that instrument.
I heard him perform live in Prague, and i still think about that performance 2 years later!
Mind-blowing talent and sensitivity. Incredible to hear Persian music composed from a Persian Austrian. With love, a Persian American ♥️
You don't always "have to be into this music" to appreciate great artist!
Since 3:00 am that I woke up this morning I have listened to this incredible mini concert many times throughout the day. I am starting a savings fund just so I can go and see him play anywhere in the USA. On his next tour. Just marvelous, thanks Tiny Desk!!
Another wonderful performance from the Tiny (ass) Desk! I think Americana and Roots music are what originally brought me to Tiny Desk, but I love the variety. I like cello, but don't usually seek it out. And I didn't know it, but I like hip-hop performed by a flautist, and I learned that I love the first and only all-female Mariachi band from New York City.
How come nobody told me Kian had a Tiny desk concert >( good, he is soooo good. So authentic in the interpretations.
The perfect music for a rainy Friday morning.
Ugh, I love Kian's playing so much 😩😍
I LOVE how expressive he is! That's as enjoyable or more than the music.
OK! this tiny desk performance proves that Kian has crossed a considerable amount of height in cello-ism. to play popper in such an intense speedy tempo and then schubert he mimicked the human voice in such a delicate way and followed up with something he wrote and which was the bomb! like there has to be a new debate on who the current greatest cellist is!
Amazing cellist and wonderful pianist.....just simply amazing...….....
Love the way the musicians seemed to feel every note! They were obviously “ in the zone “!! What a wonderful place to be! Thanks for sharing this amazing music.🎶🎵🎶❤️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This young man is truly a master of the cello. I bet the world will see more of him!

This is so so so gooooooood!
Never thought about it till you mentioned it, but it brought an instrument from 1680 to life even more so as a conduit for a more contemporary story by Popper. Absolutely beautiful!
