The Family Crest: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
There's a decent chance you're about to discover your favorite new band. Based in San Francisco and led by Liam McCormick, The Family Crest builds its songs from a combination of infectious enthusiasm and powerful talent. The group owes its huge sound not just to its seven members, but to the community that records and plays with them. Eighty people are credited on The Family Crest's first album, Beneath the Brine. At the Tiny Desk, we heard from seven players with training in classical and jazz, as well as instruments including violin, cello, upright bass, flute, trombone, drums, guitar and McCormick's voice. And what a voice: Trained as an opera singer but with a hunger for jazz, he's one of those fortunate souls with plenty to express and the range to deliver. The three songs performed here give you a sense of what The Family Crest can do, though Beneath the Brine is what you'll want to hear once your jaw has dropped watching this.
Set List:

I'm still blown away by the diversity of sound here. You guys put together something really amazing
Oh, oh my. I am completely smashed by that first song. It is so beautiful, so moving. I felt like my heart would stop. What singing! What a voice! What feeling! I know it's a trope but it brought tears to my eyes. The band is incredible. Talk about a tight sound. It was like listening to a studio production (in the good way). Everything came together perfectly. Wow, what arrangements. This is a world class band. I am going to purchase whatever they have put out.
NPR Tiny Desk Concerts have become a pillar of my life right now. Where I would be without these introductions....

The second tune is much more jazz-influenced, and that trombone at the beginning is a straight up jazz sound, as far as I can tell. I do hear more classical and folk influence most of the time, though.

You can see so much passion and expression in his eyes when he's singing, my sister showed this to me, and I'm really glad she did.

Hand to God - this beauty makes we want to shed a happy tear for us humans. We suck so much, so often, and then THIS happens.
Tiny Desk is one of the best things that has happened to music.
Why am I hearing this for the first time?! My life is changed! Thank YOU!
Love this mans voice crazy
My man looks like hes cosplaying as a Bard from DnD and absolutely killing it!
this band has all things that are good. No need for genre-fication just plain high quality musical expertise and natural talent at its best. And i tip my hat to mccormick and the rest of the family crest. most definitely cannot die before seeing them live
The whispering in Howl makes my life. 9:40
This is my absolute favorite Tiny Desk. I love this set. It's amazing. You played for 18.16 minutes, but I have listened to it 100+ times. Thank you.

Crying while listening. Good!
This is a damn good band. I heard them Live at BFD and I loved the energy. Hope people can appreciate the variation in instruments that this group brings.
This is a band I suspect I will be devotedly following for years to come. There's something about it that is exactly what i want in my music. Thank you very much for this gem.
My original favorite Mother Falcon may be on pause for a little while, but I still have a place in my heart for their friends of Family Crest. Remember when they toured together. Brilliant!!!
That song ' Make me a boat' still moves me after so many years ! What a performance.
great to see a band with so many different instruments come together so awesomely. this is a rare jewel.
Liam in my opinion is the driving force behind this impressive band. Even on his own he would be just as awe-inspiring.

I'm ona drink NPR tiny desk concert binge and these guys are my favorite so far
Beneath the Brine is so God Damn epiccccccccccccccccccccccccc
This is seriously some of the best NPR tiny desk hands down!
All three songs feel like getting slapped in the face on both cheeks with something lovely after a lazy summers morning dream.. Intense is the only word i find adequate.
TBH I dont like the recorded songs too much, they are way more jazzy but this Tiny Disk concert is unbelievably good. To me it feels more like rock or even metal played with acoustic instruments. Reminds me of System of a down with its ups and downs of loudness and calmness. Totally love it!
I think this one of the best concerts in NPR.
The first two minutes make me so happy every time. That is some powerful music.
I just stumbled upon and I'm blown away in the first 5 minutes. Incredible so far.

This is a comment I can stand behind. Go TDH! I saw two of the dates where they toured with TDH. It was an amazing couple of nights of music.
I heard about these guys about a month ago, and I love them. They have subtlety and energy simultaneously, and the contrast between the two is great. Plus, they're orchestral indie, so the sound is so full and gorgeous.
I'm here in 2019 wondering if Liam is a Muse fan. The line in Beneath The Brine "It burns like this sun" is the same melody as the same line from Muse's song Sunburn. Also, Liam shares an obvious love for Spanish influences and for falsetto, much like Matt Bellamy.
11:50 the bassist's weird nervous laugh, when you don't get the joke but everyone else does so you try to fit in.

They have many good songs (the family crest). I heard them first on my discover weekly and orchestral indie rock is 100% the best genre of music imo
so much passion, thanks
I first heard of The Family Crest on NPR, love their sound! This is great to see this.
Mind. Blown. Awesome!!!!
gorgeous AND from San Francisco… love it...
Just got around to them on NPR, haven't stopped listening since. So great!
I first heard this song "Make Me a Boat"...it was on youtube for a couple of blokes sailing in the Kimberleys...western Australia. Loved the sound and the lyrics. Thought it was a woman singing due to his falsetto. That led me to see who this band is...which led me to NPR. The general feeling is like when i found Paulo Nuttini by accident. You are so blown away by the talent that you drop everything and sit there for hours soaking up every nuance of their performance. Blown F'ing away!
I'd like to see an anthropological study on the people groups that leave thumbs down on videos like this. lol...I just don't understand

I am happy to explain my downvote. The band itself is very good. However, despite the broad range of music styles in my playlists, this particular performance - and it's operatic and melodramtic style - disrupts pretty much every playlist I have, and others who are the room have referred to it as "grating". So I have downvoted it to prevent it from reappearing in my youtube preferences.
