Liniker e os Caramelows: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Oct. 29, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- Watching this performance is to witness a spell being cast, note-by-note. Liniker e os Caramelows (Liniker and the Caramelows) are from Brazil but steeped in the tradition of soul from here in the U.S. They started their turn behind the desk with the ballad "Calmô," a testament to the power of slow songs dripping with soulful emotion. It was a bold statement of just who they are as a band and what they stand for.
You have to go back to the co-mingling of jazz and Brazilian music in the late 1950s to appreciate the affinity our two countries have had for each other musically. Lead vocalist Liniker Barros has obviously done her share of listening to soul singers and she effortlessly slides from lower registers to an emotional falsetto, though the Tiny Desk space did restrict the kind of vigorous floor show of dancing and moving from all the band members that I've seen at the bigger live performances they've done.
Liniker and the band shook things up to high-gear, Brazilian funk on the second part of "Tua," complete with a mid-song, church-revival breakdown, featuring tenor sax. "Remonta" displayed the band's flexibility as they moved from ballad to a reggae bridge, eventually exploding into a majestic African-based Candomblé rhythmic finish.
This performance catches Liniker e os Caramelows as they spiral upwards toward wider acclaim and recognition. Seeing them this close helps to understand just how they cast their musical magic on their audiences.

@@andresil8330 Of course the fact that she's trans is relevant. If you can't see the importance of overcoming social barriers and transcending prejudices, then you're missing a big part of it. Art and music don't have to be so one-dimensional, contexts can also be beautiful and relevant. And people shouldn't stop admiring it just because you think it's irrelevant. Another, and more widely accepted, example: Van Gogh paintings become much more meaningful and interesting when you read about his life and struggles. It has always been so, but no one complains about "virtue signaling" in this case. Why do you think that is?

God this gave me chills, I love Brazilian music and the singer's vocals and looks are On Point. Not to mention the overall sound and chemistry the entire band has, you can't produce art like this without all the pieces fitting together to create musical harmony. Yes Please and Thank You Brazil. Qual é o PROBLEMA de entender que a Liniker é uma mulher? Ela se auto declara como mulher trans o tempo inteiro. Eu acompanhei todo esse processo desde a transição dela. Será que é necessário que devemos pedir respeito e consideração perante ao gênero dela? MEU DEUS.

I’m completely floored by how amazing these compositions are and how angelic her voice is.
I'm obsessed with Liniker. Calmô is always on repeat. Makes me so proud be Brazilian seeing the band on this platform. The melody, composition, voice.. everything is overwhelmingly powerful - like most comments here mention, you don't need to know Portuguese to be mesmerised.
These guys played in my town - went along not knowing who they were but ended up falling in love. Warm, magical vibes. They are so good live

I understand, but the word "gringo" can be a pejorative in the USA. I know in Portuguese it is not a negative word, but if a Brazilian calls an American a "gringo"--especially in the USA--it could be taken the wrong way.
Looking back at my youth when I loved Brasilian jazz so much, now at this stage of life I realize just how limited the scope of my exposure to the richness of Brasil's musical genres were. So much heart and nuance in this.

It's love at first sight I just stumbled across her movie September morning. But I love love her sultry Soulful voice.
I’ve watched this performance uncountable times. Liniker is a complete artist and has brought proud to Brazilian for her song and immense talent. Brazilians have proud of this biggest and most genial singer. ❤

Come to Brazil. It's amazing place.
Being able to enjoy music in a language you don't understand is not such a great feat. Non-English-speaking people do this with American music all the time, all over the world. :) I'm so glad Liniker is getting this exposure around the world. We need to show people there's art and soul everywhere in the world and every language and culture is beautiful.
