Low: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives

We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to KZread!
Watch Low’s Tiny Desk concert from 2011: www.npr.org/2011/05/22/136498...
Stephen Thompson | May 22, 2011
It's been fascinating to watch the evolution of the Duluth, Minn., band Low in the 17 years since the release of its wonderful debut album, I Could Live in Hope. Renowned for being one of the slowest and quietest acts in indie-rock, Low has nevertheless found ways to experiment with new ways to sound alternately (and even simultaneously) swoony and unnerving.
Still, in spite of its members' detours into more jagged terrain - 2007's prickly Drums and Guns, singer Alan Sparhawk's rock 'n' roll side project Retribution Gospel Choir - Low returns to sweet-voiced gentility on its recent C'mon. That album's opening track, "Try to Sleep," opens this short set at the NPR Music offices, and damned if it isn't one of the best songs of the group's career; a perfect mixture of sunny charm and lyrical portent. ("Don't look at the camera," Sparhawk sings with wife and drummer Mimi Parker, adding, "Try to sleep.")
With just Sparhawk, Parker and an acoustic guitar at its disposal - many bassists have come and gone over the years, and none made this trip - Low still kept its core ingredients intact at the Tiny Desk. Clearly awake earlier than usual for an 11 a.m. set time, the pair nevertheless blended the way they always do, with Parker's pristine voice hovering over Sparhawk's froggy croon. They seem worn and a little weary throughout these three songs from C'mon, but the beauty persists.

Mimi, I'm absolutely sobbing about your passing. Knowing you've been battling cancer for so long, rest in peace. You've been an amazing inspiration for my own singing.

Too bad my first introduction to them is finding out she has passed away, and this is the first song I hear of theirs. May she rest in peace. My condolences to the family of Low.

Thank you, Mimi. Thank you for giving me peace, inspiration, breaking my heart open, and love through your music. RIP. Love to you, Alan.
This band was introduced to me by a guy I was dating. We didn’t end up for anything serious but my love for this band is turning real. This is my most success story of online dating so far. 😅So sad Mimi passed away, I can only see her videos on KZread. 😢

still missing mimi. still loving low.
This is a truly moving record of the magic that they left the world with. I hope Alan goes on to mount a concert tour one day called "Alan Sparhawk & Friends: The Songs Low" as a tribute (with guest musicians and vocalists from each city doing the Mimi parts and supporting him). I think that would be truly amazing. I would buy multiple tix for that. R.I.P. Mimi. Voice of an angel. :(
Rest in Peace, Mimi. Bless you, Alan. Love.
RIP Mimi 🙏 Thank you for all of this.
Crying. Rest in peace Mimi. ❤️
Mimi said in an interview on Sound Opinions that they get a new fan base every seven years. Well, after that, count me as a new fan. What a lovely talent.

If you can believe it, when they would play a show in the '90s, people usually knew how slow, mellow, and soothing Low's music was, so they would all just sit on the floor for the entirety of their set, even if it was a rock club (it was the only logical thing to do, since it's impossible to to their music). Years later, they played a festival in Duluth where the audience was actually encouraged to bring sleeping bags to the venue and sleep while the music was being performed.
