Mavis Staples: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives
Музыка
We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to KZread!
Watch Mavis Staple’s Tiny Desk concert from 2010: www.npr.org/2010/08/09/129005...

Mavis Staples is a legend, but she's not stuck in the past. You probably know her work with her family band, The Staple Singers, which was all over the radio in the '70s with hits like "Respect Yourself," "Let's Do It Again" and "I'll Take You There" (which she excerpts in her performance here).
What you may not know is that Mavis Staples has been actively working with her fellow Chicago musician (and Wilco leader) Jeff Tweedy on her upcoming album, You Are Not Alone. Tweedy produced the record and wrote a few songs for her, as well - including the title track, which she sings here.
The album was recorded at Wilco's studio, The Loft, and it includes songs by John Fogerty, Randy Newman, Rev. Gary Davis, Allen Toussaint and Pops Staples. You Are Not Alone also features a fine guest roster, including not only Tweedy (on bass, guitar and vocals), but also Nora O'Connor, Kelly Hogan and Wilco's Patrick Sansone on keys and vibes.
Rick Holmstrom, the skilled guitarist who accompanies Staples here, also plays on the record and in her touring band. And while You Are Not Alone doesn't come out until Sept. 14, you can get a good idea of what a treat it is by watching this stripped-down but soulful Tiny Desk concert.
Set List
"Only the Lord Knows"
"You Are Not Alone"

Mavis Staples was 81 years old when she did the Tiny Desk Concert 🎶 ♥ Legendary
With the passing of John Lewis, a perfect timing to showcase Mavis. The Staples Singers were instrumental in bringing MLK's message forward as they traveled together in the 60's.
Staples Singers: Pops (Roebuck), Mavis, 78, b Pervis, Cleotha, Yvonne "I'll take you there, Let's do it again, Respect yourself" - love love; just bought "Wattstax Dvd", to see them live. Representing her family with the same tenacity, dignity, enthusiasm, and loyalty - Mavis, I will hear your voice in my head and (ears) forever! Keep doin' what you do, never tire of your hooks and intonations.
Mavis. Mavis. Mavis. She is absolutely glorious!

I feel so lucky to have had her voice live, with Pops, and family. I have been so happy that she has used her glorious voice for truth all of her life. She is a big part my universe. I am thankful.
She is a underrated singer who I believe has a voice of the greatest quality, purity, soul, sincerity and love that compares to the truly greats...Garland, Presley, Streisand, Franklin, that surely she would be included into that pantheon of greats.

One word... Soulful
"i started looking at all these friendly faces and i got lost in the faces, and the smiles" - mavis
Wowww... Deep voice, lovely soul, great lady. ..! "Merci", from France.
I've never heard her singing and now I know what I've been missing: Mavis Staples voice. Indeed she has such a beautiful soul. Thank you for the entertainment today. Stay healthy everybody.
These lyrics are THE TRUTH
I paused “Suits” and poured myself a whiskey to listen to this. What a woman!
I remember as a young girl, hanging out at the Studio on 103rd St. in Chicago, whenever Mavis saw me she'd say, "Here comes the Messiah!" Yvonne, Mavis's sister, was my friend/mentor. RIP
