Sept. 18, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- There's a hush to the music of Nilüfer Yanya that made the Tiny Desk the perfect stage for her sound. On a hot summer day, the British singer and her band - made up of Jazzi Bobbi primarily on sax, Lucy Lu on bass, Ellis Dupuy on drums and Nilüfer on guitar and vocals - performed their three-song set with restraint and subtlety. At moments, the music felt like an eruption waiting to happen, though the suave, refined sound left an indelible vibe in the room.
The songs performed at the Tiny Desk all come from one of my top-10 albums of 2019, Miss Universe. It's an album of lovable pop songs awash in reverb but stark in tone, with Nilüfer's thickly accented, laid-back vocals and rich imagery at the forefront. Minus the production of the album, these songs are spare and spacious. The words lead the way as the ringing guitar tones embellish lines such as:
"Do you like pain?
Again, again, again, again
Again, oh, again
Do you like pain?"
I don't know anyone who sings like Nilüfer, but I'm reminded of Astrud Gilberto singing bossa nova. There's a sophisticated sensibility rough enough around the edges that I find captivating.

She's incredible. Not only is she playing rhythm AND lead, but she's singing as well. Miss Universe rules, Nilufer rules, and that is all.

i agree she's wonderful & brilliant, but she isn't playing any lead guitar.
It’s interesting to me how many criticizing comments there are here (from English speakers) about not being able to understand the lyrics. I think this says more about the listener (and maybe the norms of the forum) than the artist. While I recognize the desire to comprehend what’s being communicated, I encourage people to consider that it’s not necessarily the intent of the artist to be effortlessly understood in a way that’s immediately convenient to the way we understand the same general language. ...that sometimes it takes more effort than we’re used to connect with creative expression. ...that sometimes we as an audience won’t understand things in the way in which we expect. ...and that this is okay. Maybe it’s the freedom of expression on the side of the artist, and a corresponding effort on the side of the audience to try harder to understand, which makes room for a valuable connection that lies beyond the convenience of immediate recognition. 🙏🏽

It's always a fine line between the artistry and feeling of quashed consonants, and the desire to understand the lyrics. There's preternatural enunciation of Ella Fitzgerald's singing every letter perfectly. I think there is an element of Americans not understanding working class English accents. In this case I think the mumble style detracts. I also confess I didn't really warm to her music in general. It was too anodyne for my tastes. I'll take Dermot Kennedy (can't understand a word sometimes, ah but when I do...!)

I would much rather listen to some orchestral music if that is the case. I'm not sitting here deconstructing and analyzing her songs in order to actually enjoy it. Very lovely voice though but as a fellow Londoner she does not convey any meaning or enticement to me with her mumbles. She's from the same place I am and I can't understand her, that says a lot.

Best comment I’ve seen on KZread this week so far
god i love her voice so much
I'm really disappointed in the hate she's receiving in the comments. Miss Universe is an amazing album and I don't think I could love any album more than it in 2019. I didn't find it harder to appreciate her music just because I couldn't initially understand some lyrics. Honestly, it sounds more to me like a stylistic choice (which other musicians also employ) that she only started playing up on in her first album and it was a refreshing and daring choice for a debut, worthy of appreciation. I mean if it isn't for you, I get it but don't talk like she doesn't know what she's doing as an artist "mumbling her words" because, from the directions she took with her album, I'm sure she knows exactly what she's doing.

Miss Universe is one of the most underappreciated albums of this year
Oh, this is the tiny desk I have been waiting for ever since I stumbled onto her music last year. And this did not disappoint. Absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much.
sometimes I discover some music that I can't get enough of, that happened today, lucky me

I've been looking for the words to describe her music
Not sure what exactly people really didn't like about this. I couldn't understand all the lyrics but I could definitely feel the music regardless.
I hear her on 88.5 WXPN in philly all the time and really like her. Good job tiny desk!
They were amazing live, Nilüfer was such a revelation.
Still so cross that I discovered Nilufer Yanya the day after she performed in my nearest city. This performance is flawless, and I love Jazzi Bobbi on the keys and sax!
Found her through a 2019 retrospective on a blog somewhere. So glad I found her music. Angelic creative works. 2020 is yours, Nilüfer!
Omg, she's so lovely and her music full of different mood and shapes !! Not easy doing live, so Applause 👏💪🤘👍💘🎼🥰🤞🍀
saw her in minneapolis. the unordained stuck with me long after the performance. just beautiful
All the way from Las Vegas, NV.. Shouts out to Tiny Desk/NPR for selection, production and introducing me/us to this talented group. (Fantastic description btw.) Mad Respect Nilufer Yanya for developing such a primordial, funky an disciplined sound of your own fun transitions and builds!
You got a cool vibe Nilufer! Nicely done y'all!! ✌😀👍
one of the best nprs ive seen, the intro on last song kills live
This is really good I don't understand why I like it so much its very Minimalist but still very complex
That sax and guitar combo….. unbeatable
Feelings dont need words nor do emotion, this music is warming and very powerful!!!
When I heard Nilüfer has performed at NPR Tiny Desk, I got so excited because I thought it's a great chance for her to expand her audience. Because Miss Universe got many great reviews but did not get the recognition it really deserves yet. But I got very disappointed by the comment section, it is very different than I ever expected. Miss Universe is the album that excited me the most in last few years and such a great treasure to find. I think that she brought something new and exciting to the music industry finally and even if you wouldn't prefer to listen to her music, you should at least admit that.
LOVED THE SOUND, FANTASTIC. CONGRATULATIONS!!
Saw them at a house party in Miami absolutely fantastic live!

"I don't know anyone who sings like Nilüfer, but I'm reminded of Astrud Gilberto singing bossa nova." Actually reminds me of her countrywoman Joan Armatrading (responding while listening to Baby Luv)
THIS IS SO GOOOD!!!!!!!
Wonderful!
I don't know what it is but I'm so absolutely drawn to this music 🤩
A fine example of how effective a fairly simple instrumental part can be.

I discovered Miss Universe a month ago and have listened to it a few times now. Great album, such a pleasant surprise to find the behind the desk. Go check out the album everyone! Great performance.
Drummer is great. Very tasteful and funky and aware. Good job drummer guy.
Great soul and artistry. Just like her Dad a talented painter.
great artist
So dope.
Great sounds ॐ🎸🇧🇷.
Amazing
I am not a native English speaker and I understand everything she is saying. Wanna know how? Cuz I am curious and interested in everything that’s happening. When you’re intrigued, interested, curious, you look forward to understand all ways of expression and message. The problem nowadays e that if the content isn’t being totally delivered during the 1st minute of the song, we tend to be no longer interested. We’re getting use to be formatted, to restrict our imagination, possibilities and stop fertilizing new fields for thinking and emotions. Make your own movie out of this experience and don’t let yourself be told what is right or wrong..instead, think for yourself and that includes listening more, acknowledging originality, appreciating all that creativity and fierceness into putting out something so unique, before judging. Music should be wider. Great artist and musicians !! 🙏🇵🇹
man I love her
Miss Universe became one of my favorite albums after watching this tiny desk. Her instrumentation and voice control are superb
That riff she’s playing during The Unordained is so sick! So talented

It's one of my fave songs from Miss Universe. It's a highly underrated song, and it's gotten some of the coolest chord and dynamics changes I've seen in a pop/rock song. One moment she sounds almost like soul and alt jazz, and the other, she rips into that guitar like Kurt Cobain. So original.
angels was perfect
Lovely
pure talent
