Overcoats: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Bob Boilen | March 27, 2017 - Overcoats' music has been undeniable for me from the first time I saw the duo perform. The deep friendship between Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell comes across in their vibrant harmonies and the bountiful dance parties that pop up as they go.
Behind those rich voices lies a spare electronic backdrop that feels spacious and refreshing. Not long ago, these songs would likely be backed by a nylon-stringed guitar, but their healthy energy feels more urgent with an underpinning drone and Joao Gonzalez's drumming at the Tiny Desk. Elion and Mitchell carry the melody, and I always find myself uplifted, wanting more.
Young, Overcoats' debut album, comes out April 21. (iTunes) (Amazon)
Set List
"23"
"Leave The Light On"
"Hold Me Close"

How refreshing to watch talented musicians enjoy themselves in the delivery of their art. These liberated women with the uplifting vocals turned mens' XXXL T-shirts into Goddess' robes. Inspiring.
Ahhhh, i actually get CHILLS when they start dancing. I love people just being themselves.😍
I just recently discovered Overcoats, and I'm obsessed. So happy they have a Tiny Desk Concert!
These two are on the verge of massive stardom. Just Wait and see.
overcoats always serving looks and amazing harmonies
The cute little fist bump after "Leave the Light On" get me every time... 😍🥰
Whoah, really great mix of Blues/Folk with Electronic production. Definitely will be checking out that album. I'm such a sucker of harmonized vocals. Thanks NPR for introducing me to another fantastic group/artist
I love these voices, and they sing so well together
I'm usually very critical about music, I can't help it. If I'm not intrigued in the first 10 seconds or get goose bumps then I move on. This harmonizing got me good. thx!

Wow that sounds legendary
Thank you so much NPR! First time I heard of Overcoats was in the TV Show Cloak and Dagger, where in a dramatic scene "leave a light on" was played. That was an instant buy. And now, after listening time and again to the Album "young" it still won't get boring. Love the harmony in their voices!
They look like they're having so much fun!!!
Love their energy! Especially in the second song!
Honestly, a top 5 tiny desk! Love it and thanks for introducing me to these lovely ladies. Can't wait to check them out next time they tour in my neck of the woods!

its rare to see in todays pop culture musicians/artists being authentically themselves and having fun. this is great. Also, is the song around the five minute a Lucious Jackson song remake?

Ah, I listened to their first song then had to go to class, glad they got it fixed.
A woman's voice is the greatest instrument
the ads in the middle of the video is killing the vibe.
Joey Dosik! get him on!
Hana giving me Mirah vibes. Love this.

Please have Mt. Eddy
Sweet girls with such lovely tight harmonies.
Vance Joy or Nothing But Thieves please! OR BOTH! I'd be so great. Keep up the great work
They really look like coats
Random but the girl with the dark hair looks just like Abbi from Broad City
Dance party.
LEL That's Soft Glas
What's with the way they pronounce their r's?
que giras parecem saídas do banho
this is why i love women lyricists
What kind if guitar is thaaaaattt???
Johnny Flynn please
I get Tegan and Sara vibes.
The guitarist has a classic 1920s/30s look about her. Someone cast her!
They sound like the Parkington sisters.
Why did they get the drummer if they mostly sing to playback anyway? :/
When you were mad at Mili Vanilli but not these two. They don't sing or even play their instruments at shows. The songs totally bang and they perform well but don't expect live music. That said if you can sell albums and tickets, keep going.
The lyrics are so simplistic that it sounds like they were written by middle schoolers. But despite that, their harmonies are very tight and their energy is infectious. I can't help but enjoy it
Didn't the girl in the black hair try to kill John Wick?
One of them sounds like Crissy Cochrane
They look like one of the lady's in the ROBERT PALMER addicted to love video...
Allen Rayman please! He's the most mysterious Hip-hop artist of this time

CheeryMrO it's still illegal even if you're a mormon. But the mormon bible says that when you die you become a god on an alien planet lol and Black people apparently were turned black because they were too neutral in the battle against the devil 😂 I have a friend who an anti-theist and he has two wives, and it's fine. Like mormons clearly don't understand that the first humans were really dark-skinned and evolution turned humans white through partial albinism
That drummer though...
It's like a girl, postal service.
Honestly, I've long since been a big fan of their earlier tracks -- Walk On, Little Memory, the Fog, etc. But the first two songs of this performance just really didn't quite do it for me. I regret saying that, truly. The last song was much more the Overcoats I was looking for / hoping for. All of this is to say, I'm not much one for (pre) expectations, but it just felt a tad... chintzy? Idk. Maybe it was the whole 'dance party' aspect that threw me off from the vocals and inflection(s). Even the most non-judgemental can be quite the opposite, myself included. Even scrolling down to write this, and not watching, can marginally change how I feel. I guess part of it might be the background pre-recorded vocal call/echoes, or something like that. Anyone feel me? The lyrics were one aspect that felt a little shallow or too repetitive, something of the sort. Obviously, they haven't lost a follower by any means, and I'm sure more listening will change how I feel, respectively. I mean, it's only one short performance, but I wasn't wholly 'wow'd'.

i toootally agree. not sure how these new songs will go over live. i saw them about a year ago as an opener & they killed it. i'm seeing them for their headline show next month, so it'll be interesting to see how the performance compares.

the first song (its called 23) really didn’t sound as good live, but it’s actually super good once you download it! i think that when they sang it live, it wasn’t quite right, but i do recommend giving it a try.
