As usual, Rina Sawayama is one step ahead of us. She's back in the office, clad in a periwinkle blazer with waist cut-outs and a high ponytail cleaner than the view of the city skyline. Make no mistake: even in fluorescent lighting, the Japanese British pop star performs with the same tenacity and drama you hear in her 2020 debut album, SAWAYAMA, a lustrous pop epic peppered with early aughts R&B, nu-metal and classic rock.
Unable to tour because of the pandemic, the artist has been holding onto these songs for the last year. Sawayama's Tiny Desk (home) concert successfully reminds us - in just three tracks - of her range and versatility as both artist and performer. Tears calcify in "Dynasty," a song like a salve to wounds inherited from generations past. The heaviness of the music never overshadows her voice, which ascends heroically. "Won't you break the chain with me?" she belts out.
As if turning the other cheek, Sawayama swiftly moves into the sweet, cha-ching pop of "XS," and later the soft-hearted ballad "Chosen Family," rendered in the style of her 2021 collaboration with Elton John. The song was reborn, in part, because of John's admiration for Sawayama and her ability to cross-pollinate genres, but also because the two held "Chosen Family," both the song and concept, dearly. Funny enough, the song's thesis - "I chose you / You chose me" - reflects their meeting, too.

I’d say she deserves even more coz she sings better than Dua. But her songs are not as good as Dua’s. That’s why Dua gets more recognition in my opinnion.

I know right! But I have never seen someone who has grown up in Asian country making it big abroad...they HAVE to be spending their childhood in Europe or USA. I am an aspiring songwriter, I have tried to send my demos to people but no one's responded. There could be many reasons though,like it's not that good,or my language(though that's not a good reason),or maybe they aren't interested in an Asian boy☹️ Even Rina had to make the ep and the album all by herself,no record labels tried to sign her...I think racism is also a factor...but who knows what is the actual matter 😣

Same. I came across her at the beginning of 2018 super randomly due to that auto-play functionality in Spotify when an album ends. After that I saw her play to a venue that held maybe 100 people tops at the Great Escape festival in Brighton. She even brought her A game then with back up dancers.
Funny how a tiny desk just became an enormous arena.

Rina has improved A LOT vocally wow. In her first tour you couldn't even hear her sometimes and her breath control wasn't very good. Now she's 100% confident and her vocal control is mesmerizing. Such an example for other artists. Hard work isn't refutable. Also, I love that all her TV/COVID performances this year have been 100% LIVE, unlike all the other artists which were pre recorded "live" vocals montaged into a music video.

Yeah, 100%. I've been a fan since I heard Cherry back in '18 but always felt like the studio production massively outshone her live performances. Now it seems like she has reached the standard that she originally set out to achieve. I am very happy for her and all of the success so far is well deserved but it definitely feels like this is just the beginning and there are going to be a lot of really awesome things to come. Looking forward to being able to see her live again when concerts come back!

We'll get there eventually. I first heard about her when she did a podcast interview about 6 months ago, and I've been obsessed with her ever since.
Forget the talent. It's on point. What makes her a start is her attitude, drive, and most importantly her brain. You can tell she's super smart and gets everything. It's Rina's world and we're just living in it. Go gurl

@KLGoodman most of the artists who sing at the tiny desk concert only sing between 3 or 4 songs, so she probably decided to sing only xs, dynasty and chosen family because the first two are her most famous singles and chosen family was her last single from the sawayama was released. but it would be great if she had sung bad friend.

Rina is an underrated artist. Her first album is also underappreciated. Wonder why she was ditched in the Grammys, but at least she was included at the BRIT Awards. A fan from the Philippines here!

Her projects aren't underappreciated, she was listed as one of the best ep projects in many magasines and reviews. I dont understand either why she wasn't nominated in grammys but it doesn't mean that she's not appreciated in the industry

This performance of Chosen Family really made me tear up. As a bi Asian female myself, it meant a lot to me. Rina saying everything was going to be okay was what made my right eye year fall.
i follow the blue haired dude on tiktok and i saw he was on tiny deask with rina. Ive heard one or two of her songs but after this i became OBSESSED

If you're in the states, she just announced new dates. A lot of them are festivals, so she might not be doing a full show at those dates.

Her "RINA" ep also has several real gems. "Take Me As I Am" is the standout imo, gets a callback later on the "SAWAYAMA" album.
