Smokey Robinson: Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

Mitra I. Arthur | October 16, 2023
Legend is a word thrown around far too often. But if there was ever an artist the word "legend" applies to, it would be Smokey Robinson. The iconic songwriter, producer and vocalist was not only a key architect of the Motown sound, but also R&B and soul music as a whole. His uncanny ability to craft tender and catchy romantic tunes has served as a model for songwriters that followed in the decades since he began his career.
1981's "Being With You" opens the Tiny Desk to immediately alert us that, at 83 years young, his sweet and sensual falsetto is present and ready to dazzle. From there, he casually introduces one of his numerous hits with The Miracles, "The Tears Of A Clown," as "one I wrote with Stevie Wonder" to the audience's delight. Robinson's pen game is still strong as he presents two tracks from his new album, Gasms. His romantic lyricism is on display in "Beside You," and the sax solo from Brandon Wright in "If We Don't Have Each Other" is a particular standout in this performance. And when he closed with "Cruisin'," the audience was more than happy to lovingly participate in "cruising together."

Smokey must've taken amazing care of his voice to still have such great pitch and control after over half a century of singing. His voice was obviously stronger as a young man, but his mastery of the art clearly allowed him to hold on to so much. Oh, and he's one of America's greatest songwriters. Has to be said, Smokey is a legend.

That has to be an incredible feeling when people of different ethnicities know the lyrics to your song and smiling while singing. I had the privilege of meeting Smokey and taking a picture with him. God blessed this man with so much “Cool” it’s really not fair lol.

This free Smokey Robinson Concert was great. He is the consummate performer, he gave in this concert just as much as he did at the one I paid for in April. The entire group was there playing and singing at the great Tiny Desk Concert. It was enjoyable, entertaining, and exciting. Mr.Smokey Robinson, my favorite entertainer, is truly the GOAT. And a big thank you to the NPR Tiny Desk Concerts, keep them coming.

Smokey's music was a part of my childhood. I'm close to 70, and used to hear him, along with The Beatles, The Supremes, and other early Sixties hits while being driven to grade school. And it astonishes me that not only is he still around, but he's still sounding good, and he barely looks a day over 50! At his age, most singing stars are working on their golf game, wheezing in the hospital, or gone.

A perfect way to start a Monday morning in the UK. Was lucky to see Smokey live a few times and was always left super impressed and i see nothing has changed. The voice has mellowed but is still as sweet as can be and the band sound fabulous too. "Besides you" sounds like a Smokey future classic. Thank's to all at NPR for keeping live music real and introducing us to new music and finding time to honour and recognise those that have been and remain masters of their craft. Thanks Smokey for all the beautiful music and so many wonderful memories.
