Songhoy Blues: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Фильм және анимация
July 14, 2015 by BOB BOILEN •
The music I feel most connected to beyond rock is from Mali. The melodies are so fluid, so elegant and most of all so trance-inducing. It often sits on one chord and notes played revolve around that chord. It can feel like a drone at times, and in the case of Songhoy Blues it rocks, lulls and the percussion grooves are not only trance-inducing but dance-inducing.
Many of the musicians we know from Mali are in exile, driven out by Islamists threatening musicians and kidnapping them; the members of Tinariwen know this firsthand. There is sadness, defiance and celebration in the music Songhoy Blues brought to the Tiny Desk from a record called Music in Exile, which is co-produced by an artist most of us rock lovers know best from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Nick Zinner. Rock and the desert blues, already closely connected in attitude and sound, fuse nicely with his touch - and can be felt in blissful rawness here.

Bass player on a Squier and Guitarist on a Yamaha Pacifica. This video needs to be seen by all these people worrying about what kind of guitar they have and what kind of tone wood it has. Just make awesome music with what you have.
STILL my favorite tiny desk of all time❤😌✊🏾😊👑👑👑👑
Seriously, NPR tiny desk. My life is richer because of you. Songhoy Blues is my current fix of Sanity and happiness.

You need to see these guys live. I've not seen another band get a crowd going like they do. This set is about as chilled out as they get.
The best program of music in the world. I'am brazilain and i met many good bands and good vibrations. Thanks!
Gotta love it when even though I can't understand the language but I can still feel the music. Love their sound.

Very few bands stop me in my tracks and force me to turn them up. These fellas did exactly that! Absolutely outstanding rock and roll!
One of my 2017 goals is to dance more. I'm a God-awful, rotten excuse of a dancer but this music is inspiring me to dance alone while organizing my office and it's everything to me. Thank you!
If you can't hear how mississippi blues was formed in the early 1900's from THIS, then give up on music. It's the roots of slaves, from all over africa, who brought this art with them and in the USA we now have blues. In the caribbean, we got reggae. Without africa, imagine what we wouldn't have. Wow.

Nothing I said about them was a joke..other than if you didn't hear their 'accent' you might think they're from South- I saw the tour schedule & ( crazy busy & in demand playing with many known artists of in many genres.)Probably hard to find them performing either w/out the other or 'alone' or w/o other bands....
Absolutely gorgeous made me feel giddy and I couldn't stop smiling love them and love tiny desk❤

The power of music is immense ! If it touch your soul no need to understand the lyrics or share the same believes, just let the feeling penetrate you and make you happy
The sheer fact that this music was enjoyed by many who didn’t understand the lyrics shows that music crosses all language barriers.

Great point. In my opinion, the only other thing that achieves that is football, you can go almost anywhere in the world and enjoy watching or debating football with someone even if neither of you speak eachothers language. Its a language all by itself.
The feeling in this music is through the roof, true musicians with the power to perform.
Songhoy Blues performed last summer at Bonnaroo 2015, and put on an incredibly energetic set in mid-afternoon. This video is a great representation. I hope they're able to return home soon, and I'm always glad to see the periodic resurgences of Malian music, from Ali Farka Toure, to his son, Vieux, to these amazing musicians.

Saw these guys live at a festival here in India. Couldn't stop dancing.
If only there was stage for these guys, I bet it would be a blast to watch. I love the harmonies. It's not about the flash, it's all about the groove.
I really wish I could thumbs up this more than once...
Thanks so much for this and YES Mali is a honey hole for such beautiful music. In fact all of Africa is, but for some reason Mali just seams to continuasly flurioush with a huge abundance of wonderful musicians and great sounds. Gotta LOVE Africa. Cheers from Canada.

Music can express freedom and joy but extremism can only express force. A world without extremism is one of relative peace. A world without music is one I don't want to live in. Let's save music and rid ourselves of the other.
This is pretty awesome stuff. It has a really nice blues feel to it, on top of a slightly jammy 70s-esque feel to it. I can see this being used in film, animation, and games pretty easily as set music. It is amazing how great they sound live. Just like Daughter, these guys seem to be truly masterful at their craft.
I watched this the entire time with a huge smile on my face. Pure bliss!
Absolutely great musicians and music. Thank you!!!
so much flavor and soul in it... amazing! Loved it
Very proud of you guys. So talented!!!!! Storm of happiness
each of my senses are stunned into reckoning by the sheer glory and happy-making and total wow of this goodness
"Al Hassidi Terei" has a little bit of a crossroad groove to it. I've recalled it from some Hebrew rock like Fool's Gold and even some Scottish rock. It might be the bass and drums I'm honing in on.
Gents, you have mastered this genre. Salute souljahs.
Beautiful performance. Also the Ledisi field recordings on the end of the video... mind blown
Awesome. I danced through the whole performance, good vibes. Thanks NPR.

It isn't a surprise. It's fucking awesome is what it is. I'm glad they're getting more notice. Been following Tinariwen since 2004.
I am not from Mali, but I know that Songhai Empire and the regions all around have heavily influenced American blues. So from the Empire of Mali to the "Dirty South" was a long and painful voyage that made human souls to express the deepest feelings, through the only thing no one could take out of them: chants, hand clapping and instrument made out mere elements of the nature such as wood, for instance. At that time, people did not use electric guitars or synthesizers, because they were simply none! Even in Europe or Amerca, these instruments are relatively new as compared to instruments such as the very ancient Kora, several types or sizes of African drums and other instruments made of animal horns so hand-crafted by master artists,. Music always integrate elements from anywhere people. That's a fact! Music is kinda like a universal language. Finally, is it surprising that these guys are using electric guitars? As long as they do reproduce the same sounds as their ancestors, using today's instruments, I personally see no problem! This kind of joy shouldn't turn in trolls on social media; I find it despicable so to speak. Let's get educated and have good time, people! Thank you Tiny Desk for bringing us together as you allow music of the world to us. Peace!
Mali comes from great great great culture and civilisation that had big influence on the world we even had the wolrd richest man know as today ...a great civilisation like that can never go in flame...the world will know again how we influence the world...with peace everybody stay woke
So dope. just amazing. That last track hurt my neck.

Musicians/Artisists from the Sahel region/countries deserve SO MUCH MORE CREDIT, man. I still haven't heard of someone from that place that isn't an exploding giant star of pure sheer talent. I really wish I could understand their lyrics too, but the music is just more than enough to move my emotions/feelings in many different direction. Hope this band can achieve some more success "breaking through in the western market" ASASP.
