The Black Crowes: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

This performance was recorded on February 20, 2020. We will continue releasing Tiny Desk videos of shows that had already been taped. In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
March 23, 2020 | Josh Rogosin -- The second Chris Robinson swaggered through the door, he was cracking jokes. "Life is full of disappointments," he lamented. "I thought the desk would be smaller!"
That didn't deter him or his brother Rich from belting out the hits from The Black Crowes' platinum album, Shake Your Money Maker. It's somehow been 30 years since the singles "Jealous Again" and "Hard To Handle" (their Otis Redding cover) received constant radio play, and the brothers have reunited for the 30th anniversary of that debut album.
In the early 1990s, I was taping songs off my bedroom stereo's FM tuner to learn Rich Robinson's iconic guitar lines. I was thrilled when the newly reunited Brothers Of A Feather decided to open their Tiny Desk concert with "She Talks To Angels." What I didn't expect was how great it would sound three decades on, stripped down to just voice and acoustic guitar. As soon as I heard the first lick, I was transported to my childhood bedroom. If you close your eyes, you can imagine this is what it sounded like when it was written in their childhood home outside Atlanta.
It's no secret that the brothers haven't always gotten along, and Chris and Rich Robinson have had musical successes outside their collaboration as The Black Crowes. But the combination of Chris' instantly recognizable raspy belt and Rich's catchy guitar riffs was always going to be the duo's legacy. Judging by the gasps from the lucky NPR staff in attendance, it's clear that their rift was not meant to last.

@@macauley70 For years they've been underrated by both music critics and the general listening public. There are far less worthy groups in the Rock HOF but The Black Crowes have been eligible for 5 years and not in. I mean really give me a break...ABBA, Blondie, Chicago, Depeche Mode, The Everly Brothers, Frank Zappa, Green Day, Janet Jackson...the list goes on and on. These artists are HOF worthy and the Crowes aren't? That shows the lack of respect, and a lack of musical knowledge.

Nostalgia is in Everyone nowadays, i swear lol. I've been going through a lot (Mentally) and I've met some Serious hurdles lately And somehow, in all this confusion And uncertainty, I've found this Yearning to go back in time. Not that I'm scared of the impending future But that i would much rather regress to something old and familiar. So, I've invited my past back to the present and suddenly I'm doing things my inner teenager would do in times likes these. It's Awesome. Not conforming to anything or for anyone except Myself. Embrace the inner kid or teenager in you.. Invite them in. :)

When I was a kid in the early to mid 90’s I loved this band even though I didn’t really follow bands. I just knew when their songs were on the radio I really enjoyed them. I still remember summer evenings, driving home from baseball games listening to “Talks to Angels” or being at the public pool hearing “Hard to Handle” over the loud speakers. It was only a few years ago when I really sat back and listened to all of their albums, and I’ve been steadily listening to them ever since.

The Black Crowes are the first band I ever really listened to. I'm lucky enough to have a dad who was willing to take me to their show in Pozo, California when I was fourteen. I consider it the first live show I ever went to because it was the first show I went to that I wanted to go to, and the first band that I checked and rechecked the tour dates for to see how close they were going to get to my town. When I saw this video up I nearly cried...these gentleman feel like good friends to me and they don't even know me. They introduced me to the feeling that rock n' roll and the blues provide and I still look for that feeling in all of the music I listen to. I still put on The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion a couple times a year, and it's as groovy and soul-filled as ever.

Nice story. So 25 years later you can check also this year when they play close to wherever you live if they can finally go on tour (maybe difficult because of coronavirus, who knows). I have followed them since the beginning, saw them a couple of times (in Spain, where I come from), and I feel a liitle bit sad because they couldn't maintain the band mambers, at least of the last time they were on tour (mostly Steve Gorman and Sven Pipien, the most faithful). I am curious about the new band anyway.
