Bono and The Edge: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Robin Hilton | March 17, 2023
It's hard to overstate the kindness and good-natured humor Bono and The Edge brought to the Tiny Desk. When they first arrived at the NPR Music offices, Bono spoke on an imaginary phone, "The talent's here! The talent's coming through," poking fun at their own fame, while carrying The Edge's guitar. (The Edge called Bono the best roadie he's ever had.) The two never stopped beaming, like two overjoyed newcomers thrilled at the chance to play for someone.
The performance was a preview of U2's new album, Songs Of Surrender, featuring stripped-down versions of songs from across the band's catalog. To help pull off several reimagined songs from the 2000 album All That You Can't Leave Behind, Bono and The Edge invited a teen choir from the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C., to join them. During rehearsals, Bono told the students to think of "Beautiful Day" as the kind of "post-drinking" singalong you'd bellow with friends after leaving a bar. He then quickly realized none of them are old enough to drink, before feigning a heart attack.
Traveling without bassist Adam Clayton or drummer Larry Mullen Jr., Bono and The Edge made the trip from Ireland to the States specifically for the Tiny Desk, arriving in D.C. after five days of rehearsals at Bono's New York apartment. When they settled in for the performance, they treated the office to four songs, including a deeply emotional version of "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," written for the late INXS singer Michael Hutchence, and a reworked version of "Walk On," which Bono said was inspired by and dedicated to the people of Ukraine.

This is why U2 is great - Bono and Edge doing exactly what they did by exhibiting grace and respect for those young adults and everyone else in the room! Those young adults will never forget being part of this personal concert. I bet those young adults went home and believed they have a chance to be as inspirational as Bono and Edge! I love listening to new artists and discovering new edges of musical horizons, but then you see this performance by Bono and the Edge and you immediately understand the levels of performance between new artists and ones like U2 with decades of experience behind them. Amazing.
And just casually, Bono reminds us all what it means to be a master of your craft. Whether in a room of a dozen people or a stadium of thousands, the charisma and warmth underlying the voice shine through. Just thank you.
What makes a legendary band? The one that plays songs they played a million times like it was the first or their last. A lot of soul and obviously still a lot of joy in making music. This reinterpretation of their classic song was just incredible and heartfelt.

Loving U2! sending hugs and kisses from the Philippines
Can't you thumbs up more than once? Would hit it every time Love this thank you again you tiny little desk you.
This demonstrates how strong their songs are when they’re stripped down like this. Bravo Bono, Edge and the Choir.
"Stuck in a Moment" is a masterpiece of songwriting. I am not aware the song inspired by Michael Hutchence. Thank you NPR for making this jam session possible.

The version on David letterman before bonos voice was half shot was good and they explain the back story
Bono phrases so freely then when the Edge harmonizes they are so perfectly in sync. I guess 50 years will do that.
there s no artist that can feel they r music like they do. They are so real, so deep, every notes and every Words really come from the inside! Great! Plus they work hard, they innovate, always renewing and redefining what they are..we just have to thank artists like them
So, so beautiful... What an amazing collab...

Somehow, through a brilliant convergence of work, talent, determination, and luck, Mr. Bob Boilen and his remarkable team have crafted THE concert series. All in a corner of an office, around a Tiny Desk at NPR. And I am grateful beyond words for it.
These tiny desk concerts are something special, man, can't describe what it does... The vibe, so soothing, it takes me away to a time and a placeI've never been before.

The whole concept is that it's like you're attending a tiny, private concert. When you go to a regular concert you're typically in a noisy venue with hundreds (or in this case, thousands) of screaming fans, and massive amps that distort everything and make it impossible to really appreciate the music. Here you have a small gathering with minimal amplification, everyone being quiet and enjoying the vibe. So there's a level of direct connection with the audience that isn't normally possible. And I feel like the artists really appreciate that, too. Having all those screaming fans is great, but sometimes you just want people to shut up and listen when you're performing.
Happy to have withnessed these guys live twise...on time in the pouring rain. Two milestones in my memory.....a band whos impact is a result of the force of 4 individuals.......a BAND.
Oh my... what have I just witnessed... That gave me shivers, tears, thank you everyone who made this happen. The best duo ever from the best band ever. Sublime, no more words.

Agreed. Truly a pleasant surprise. Highly recommend you watch the Sting & Shaggy Tiny Desk concert. It's just as magical. Enjoy
Chills, barely 3 minutes in!!! Love how Bono interacts with the chorus!! Thanks for showcasing that St. Pat's and the Irish culture is all about music, stories, friendship and making connections! So much fun!!
Insane how talented and amazing this was. Just effortless arrangement and execution.
I must commend the audio engineer for his exceptional work. I am impressed by U2's excellent performance even in such a tiny setting.
All through my teens, twenties and thirties I just couldn’t understand the love for U2. In my forties married, with kids and long lost friends dotted around the world that I miss. For some reason these events, circumstances coupled with U2’s music have just clicked. I can’t get enough of the lads now. Always thought Bono was an ego but now I see a very caring man who genuinely has love for his mates. Big up U2…..

Haha, I'm the complete opposite. I was a huge U2 fan throughout my teens, twenties, but sadly they were left behind by the progress of music. Their early catalog is still dear to my heart, but I haven't paid attention to them for the last 2 decades. I'm actually a bit saddened by this video, as it clearly shows their best days are in the past. They should call it a day and keep their legacy intact.

@@RuliManurung Wow, I'm like you too with loving the 1980's U2 and not caring at all about U2 in the 2000's. But this video is one I'll watch over and over. The tone, the music, the feeling, the intimacy is as real as music gets. Well done Bono and The Edge

Really vibing this performance enlightening playing over and over well done all 🎉🎉🎉
This was refreshing to see an unplugged performance from them. Just poetry, acoustic guitar and stories to tell. Can't beat it!

You’ll enjoy their new album. Mostly or all acoustic interpretations of 40 of their songs.
Bono didn't go out of his way to make things easy for the sound crew here, but the sound guy in me knows I'd gladly put up with it for this kind of authenticity in a performance. Well done, all around: Bono, Edge, choir & crew.
I love them so much!
An absolute joy to watch/listen to these fellas.
My favorite Irish men! Thank you Bono, Edge, Adam and Larry for lighting up my life! I can't imagine my world without U2 in it! 💚🧡

The Edge really shines in this format. GREAT guitar playing and vocals. Very cool to invite the youth choir too.
Thank you Bono, Edge and choir. U2 reminds me of days at the beach in the early 90's. All lyrics always hit home. You are all a blessing. God Bless.
Can you imagine walking by this place and you hear Bono and edge? These are the guys that filled up stadiums around the world for the past 40 years!
Bono and The Edge in a minimal musical setting is so profound. wow.... amazing concert. *salute!*
Their chemistry is unparalleled. I love how they gave each other props. Ever since I first listened to u2 I’ve been stuck in a moment and I can’t get out of it.

What an amazing cheerful vibe this is…music really is the language of the world 🇮🇪👑
Few bands can entertain a massive stadium and a small room to such effect. Brilliant, brilliant and brilliant
